Diablo III Hints?

Thanks to Shacknews for the heads up.

Diablo III is one of those games that most people assume has to be in development, but has still yet to be announced. Now, several Blizzard and Diablo fan sites have hosted an online chat interview with Diablo novelization author Richard A. Knaak containing numerous tidbits suggesting that a third main game in Blizzard's acclaimed hack and slash RPG series is on the way. Some choice quotes:

Q - Medievaldragon: How much of the book is creation of yours, and how involved is Chris Metzen behind the canon storyline of Diablo: The Sin War Trilogy? Do you think the ramifications of this book impact in the storyline of Diablo 3 the game?

A - Knaak: This is a pure collaboration between myself and Chris/Blizzard. All that is written is passed by him and the others there. This will be canon and has adjusted earlier info. The ramifications here will be used for any future project...and I ain't writing for a dead game.

Q - Deathshade|EU: So... Diablo 3?

A - Knaak: I am not writing for a dead world...but a world with dead. nuff said

Sweet, Diablo III. Now all we need is Starcraft II and Warcraft IV!

Another Windows 7 build has leaked. This time it's build 7229. Sources are indicating that unless there is a leak internally from Microsoft, this would be last build leaked before the RTM. Initial reports indicate that you can not use your RC keys with this build, so if you want to activate properly you should not upgrade to this build. Windows 7 is still on track for a July RTM, and it's possible that it may even RTM by the end of June. Microsoft has announced that it will be available in stores October 22nd.

Darn that pesky euro! RSS feed problem traced to currency character

Well, as soon as we start publicizing our RSS feeds -- and we have one new one just for Betanews Alpha -- we get reports of problems with them. I'm able to corroborate some of what many Firefox users are reporting: With some Firefox installations, our RSS feeds have been coming up blank. Some, though not all.

One thing we noticed: On systems where Firefox is installed along with a separate RSS news reader, our RSS feed pages do not turn up blank in Firefox. In fact, they look fine. On systems where no separate RSS reader is installed, our feed pages do turn up blank.

Our infrastructure man -- or perhaps better put, "InfraMan," Eric Steil -- discovered the problem this afternoon: Believe it or not, it has to do with the character for the euro, the European currency. I won't type that character here because it may cause the problem, up until Eric installs the solution. Believe it or not, for Firefox browsers that rely on Live Bookmarks, the inclusion of the euro character in the page causes the whole feed to come up blank. Anyway, we've tracked down the problem, and we're implementing the fix right away...

GPU-Accelerated Wi-Fi password cracking goes mainstream

The once thought 8 character length password may no longer be safe, after the GPU-accelerated password recovery attack can break weak WPA/WPA-2 PSK passwords. The Elcomsoft Wireless Security Auditor mentioned that its software can work completely off-line and find passwords by analyzing a dump of network communications, and display them in plain-text. The Wireless Security Auditor does require the source of a valid log of wireless communication. Experts have urged IT managers to move from 8 character WMP passwords to 12 or 15, in a quote from David Hobson: "It's a wake-up call to IT managers, pure and simple. IT managers should now move to 12 and even 16 character keys as a matter of urgency.

YouTube, HP team up on filmmaking competition

"I demand an explanation for these shenanigans. What do you have to say?" If you're a regular YouTube junkie, you might be hearing that phrase a lot more in the near future.

The massive, Google-owned video-sharing site announced on Monday a new initiative called Project Direct, a contest sponsored by Hewlett-Packard in which aspiring filmmakers are encouraged to submit films between two and seven minutes in length. A total of 20 finalists will be chosen by a panel led by Thank You For Smoking director Jason Reitman; the final winner out of those 20 will be chosen by YouTube voters.

The contest comes with three somewhat quirky guidelines stipulated by Reitman: "a character in the film must face a situation above his or her maturity level," the aforementioned line--"I demand an explanation for these shenanigans. What do you have to say?"--must be included somewhere in the dialogue, and one scene must include one character passing a photograph to another character. (Perhaps that's a nod to HP's imaging and printing group, the division of the tech conglomerate that has been vocally promoting the contest.)..

Leaked Google OS Screenshots?

Screenshots have surfaced of the suspected Google Chrome OS, without any reliable source or confirmation to back up the claims. The six leaked screen shots show what could possibly be the very first screenshots of the new developer's beta operating system. The beta is labeled 0.1.15 in one of the screenshots, showing the early stages of the operating system. Video: Microsoft technology can read air writing

At Microsoft's TechFest this morning, researchers from Microsoft Research offices in Beijing, China, demonstrated a method of writing in the air, with the invisible text immediately transferring to a PC.

New Microsoft Courier video leaked

A new video of the Microsoft Courier (name not finalized) has been leaked onto the Internet, demonstrating in the video just how users will actually use the device. The video didn't show any keyboard but the tablet device will be used through various swipes, flicks and pinches to navigate pages. It's hard to tell exactly the way the device works from the video, but there appears to be a physical home button in the middle of the tablet that brings the user to a home page or the last page viewed. The center of the tablet seems to act as a clipboard for images that allows you to navigate the device to transfer the images to another page.

Office 2010 optimized for Windows 7

Since a technical preview version of Office 2010 leaked barely a day ago it seems to have spread to anyone and everyone, despite a limited official technical preview scheduled for July. We already knew that Office 2010 will ship in both 32-bit and 64-bit versions (and the technical preview was leaked in both these flavours) and earlier this week it was confirmed that it will run on Windows XP SP3, Windows Vista and Windows 7 as well. Robert McLaws is one of the many who has downloaded and installed the leaked build on Windows 7, and has discovered that parts of the Office suite have been optimised for Windows 7 by utilising the new jump lists feature.

Hands on with Google's OCRopus open-source scanning software

The first official alpha version of Google's OCRopus scanning software for Linux was released yesterday. OCRopus is built on top of HP's venerable open-source Tesseract optical character recognition (OCR) engine and is distributed under the Apache License 2.0.

OCRopus uses Tesseract for character recognition but has its own layout analysis system that is optimized for accuracy. The OpenFST library is used for language modeling, but it still has some performance issues. OCRopus is designed to be modular, so that other character recognition and language modeling components can be used to eventually add support for non-Latin languages. An embedded Lua interpreter is used for scripting and configuration. The developers chose Lua rather than Python because Lua is slimmer and easier to embed. This release also includes some new image cleanup and de-skewing code.

AT&T leaked document bashes the Palm Pre

A leaked document, supposedly from AT&T's internal network, has been making its rounds around the internet. The document compares the features of the Palm Pre and Apple's iPhone in such a way, that it would seem the Pre couldn't hold a candle to the vastly popular iPhone. Image courtesy of precentral The Palm Pre has generated an enormous amount of hype, and AT&T must be finally taking notice of it. The result? Some really drastic measures. AT&T has been circulating the document (above picture) amongst its employees in a possible attempt to lure customers away from the Pre. It shows a biased comparison between the features of both handsets, which leans heavily towards the iPhone.
