17.3.2009iPhone 3G unlock shown live to the web
As previously reported on Neowin last week, the iPhone dev-team has announced they've figured out how to unlock the iPhone 3G for use on any GSM
network you have in your country. The patch will be released on New Years Eve and will require an iPhone that is running 2.11.07 baseband or lower and
will have to be jailbroken. For those of you who were wondering how this is done, there was a demonstration of "yellowsn0w" (the codename for the
unlock) shown live to the Internet by a member of the Dev-Team Blog named MuscleNerd. He used Qik on an iPhone 2G which allowed everyone watching to
communicate with him and ask questions along the way.

22.12.2008iPhone dev team confirm 3G iPhone unlocked for all networks
The unofficial iPhone dev team have confirmed moments ago that they have completed an iPhone 3G unlock and are currently packaging a user-friendly
application with the simplicity that you see in other applications from the team like QuickPwn. The update will be released on New Years Eve and will
require a jailbroken iPhone and 2.11.07 baseband or earlier. Jailbreaking is a method of unofficially hacking the device and allowing it to run 3rd
party applications not available on Apple's official AppStore. The latest iPhone 2.2 software updates the baseband beyond 2.11.07 and it is
recommended that if you want a 3G unlock that you do not update to 2.2 using iTunes alone.

16.12.2008On New Years Eve, iPhone 3G Unlock to go public
Yellowsn0w is the codename to the iPhone 3G unlock. Yesterday, the Dev-Team announced that they have officially unlocked the 2.11.07 baseband on the
iPhone 3G. Users of the 2.2 firmware update do not have the 2.11.07, and will not be able to unlock their devices (the Dev-Team has previously told
users not to upgrade if you wanted to get your phone unlocked).
Yellowsn0w (the codename to the unlock software) will be available for
all users in Cydia, so no restore will be necessary. Since it will be installed via Cydia, it does not matter if you have a PC or Mac.
So, from now until the estimated launch date of New Year's Eve, the Dev-Team will put this software under extensive testing and QA. They have said
before that until it is one-hundred percent stable, they will not release it to the general public, because they do not want to harm the device.
Complete instructions for unlocking will be given upon launch of the software. Just do not update past version 2.11.07 of the baseband.

18.12.2008UltraSn0w unlocks any 3G iPhone
The iPhone Dev Team has released a video demonstrating a new unlocking method for all iPhone 3G's. The new unlock will be able to unlock the 3G
iPhone running 3.0 firmware regardless of baseband or bootloader, where in the past has prevented future unlocking of the iPhone. The new tool,
replacing the previous YellowSn0w, will be called UltraSn0w on Friday, after Apple has released the 3.0 firmware and can make last minute adjustments.
UltraSn0w will both unlock and jailbreak the iPhone. Jailbreaking is what allows the device to run unsigned applications that are not distributed by
Apple. This new method will work on the iPhone 3G and iPod Touch 2G running 3.0.

17.06.2009iPhone 3G Unlocker (Yellowsn0w) shown in video!
Yesterday, the iPhone Dev Team posted a live video of the iPhone 3G unlock tool, codenamed Yellowsn0w. MuscleNerd, who is part of the iPhone Dev Team,
was the member who explained how it worked, and showed it in action in the video.
Basically, you just have to have the iPhone 3G already
activated and jailbroken with the 2.1/2.2 firmware. Then, you download the Yellowsn0w app from Cydia. Remove your AT&T sim card, and replace it with
another sim card. Then, run the Yellowsn0w app, and within about 20 seconds, your iPhone 3G should be fully working.
It is expected to be
released New Years Eve.

04.01.2009Hold Up! Do not update that iPod/iPhone!
If you have an iPod Touch (1G/2G) or an iPhone (2G/3G), and your device is jailbroken, unlocked, or you want it to be either in the future, do NOT
update to 2.2.1, which was released moments ago.
This update could interfere with current jailbreak/unlock abilities along with 2G iPod
Touch jailbreaks.
The Dev-Team has posted this on their blog, and they are looking into it now. This post will be updated when there is
more information.
Anyone who hasn't jailbroken or unlocked, feel free to upgrade, and let us know what is new!

28.01.2009RedSn0w Demo Goes live! Not quite finished...
The second generation iPod Touch has finally been jailbroken! The iPhone-Dev Team, which previously expressed no interest in the iPod Touch, as they
were focused on the iPhone 3G unlock, have been the first one to do it! Their excuse that they had to work on the iPhone 3G unlock is now invalid
because YellowSn0w is out, so they must have some free time to do it!
The initial jailbreak has said to only have taken them a mere
hour to crack. But, there are still problems they need to solve. There have been other developers working on a 2G iPod Touch jailbreak, such as the
Chronic Dev Team, but they have not been successful yet.
Minutes ago, a Dev Team member, MuscleNerd launched a live video on Qik
demonstrating the jailbreak process and the problem that they are still faced with.
The video showed the 2G iPod Touch preloaded with the
jailbreak data, but it would not boot. The kernel was giving an invalid kernel error, since it was not signed by Apple. With a simple click of the
"Redsn0w" button, the kernel signature check for Apple went away. The iPod now booted like normal, with Cydia and Installer.
The
problem they still face is there is no way right now to have the kernel be patched to allow for a non-Apple signed kernel every boot. Currently, you
have to patch the kernel to allow the kernel to boot with their jailbroken kernel on every reboot. So, this is sort of a tethered jailbreak, and not
useful to most people Their goal is to remove the tethering requirement.
Once they achieve that goal, we will see the jailbreak software,
codenamed RedSn0w (similar to yellowsn0w) released!

18.01.2009iPhone 3GS gets jailbroken and unlocked
Purplera1n, unrelated to the Dev Team, has come out with a solution to jailbreak the iPhone 3GS for both Windows and Intel Mac computers. The
jailbreak allows users to download Cydia on their iPhone to install unofficial applications on their device. The jailbreaking solution provided by
purplera1n still does not allow Winterboard to be used as of yet. The method installs an application called Freeze onto the device; this installs and
unpacks Cydia. Users who install Cydia onto their device can then proceed to install UltraSn0w which was recently released to unlock the iPhone 3G,
now unlocks the iPhone 3GS.

06.07.2009Apple iPhone 3G unlocked already
A group from Brazil has managed to unlock Apple's iPhone 3G handset just days after its release. The unlocked iPhone is displayed and demonstrated
in an online video on a Portuguese-language news blog. An unlocked iPhone can be used with any Sim card and service provider.
IPhone user
Bruno MacMasi said in an interview with Gizmodo that the unlocking process involved modifying the Sim hardware so that the International Mobile
Subscriber Identity can be overwritten and removed from the original network. A similar process was used to unlock the original iPhone last year.
Separately, a group of researchers known as the iPhone Devteam has released the first 'jailbreak' software releases for the iPhone 3G and the
iPhone 2.0 software update. The 'jailbreak' term refers to the process of removing the software controls which prohibit users from installing
software outside of the iPhone App Store.

17.07.2008Free iPhone SIM Unlocking Software Available (iUnlock)
The folks over at iPhone Dev Wiki posted a free SIM unlock tool for the iPhone. Similar to the other solutions, this software-only solution should
allow you to SIM unlock your iPhone, allowing to use any GSM cell phone carrier. In the U.S. this limits your alternative choice to T-Mobile (over
AT&T), but in other countries, GSM carriers are far more common.
The software is being mirrored (
Gizmodo
mirror) by a number of locations along with downloadable source code. Tutorials are still being developed but some early
instructions have become available.

24.08.2007iPod Touch 2G Gets Pwned
The iPod Touch 2G has officially been broken! Unlike the 'tethered' jailbreak that was offered some time ago, this release is the real deal. After
discovering a hole in the bootrom of the iPod touch, they were able to work out an exploit that can 'unlock' any iPod Touch, regardless of the
firmware version.
They were originally planning on keeping this a secret until the next rendition of the iPod Touch was released, but the
exploit's 'geeky beauty,' the glamour they'd get for finally releasing a 2G version, and the fact that they love us so much, was enticing enough
to let it rip.
For anyone curious about the aforementioned 'hole' in the bootrom, visit the
iPhoneWiki.
A raw firmware
patch that converts a 'tethered' 2G unlock into an 'untethered' one, is available
here, but as of now, there are no PwnageTool or QuickPwn
versions. We'll update you once those are released.
The "Dev-Team" has assured us that they'll continue to play their oh-so-fun game
of cat and mouse throughout the summer, and into the release of the next iPhone. (Hoping that they don't fix the bootrom of course!)

11.03.2009iPhone 3.0 gets video MMS
The iPhone is getting a major upgrade in the summer with iPhone firmware 3.0, including a lot of new features, some already offered by extra apps in
the AppStore, but pre-loaded and free for the iPhone, iPhone 3G and iPod Touch. One of the new exciting features that hackers were able to unlock is
Video MMS. Users can send, receive and playback video directly from their iPhone to iPhone, meaning both MMS and recording capabilities will be
available in the summer.

04.04.2009A new year and a new beginning for the iPhone
To this date, the iPhone has only been offered by mobile service giant AT&T (In the U.S.). That has been the biggest down-side to many people
interested in purchasing the device. In most rural areas, AT&T simply doesn't offer 3G speeds which defeats the main emphasis of the iPhone.
Whilst we were all out spending the last few moments of 2008 with our friends and family, a hacker group calling themselves the "iPhone Dev Team"
was hard at work finalizing a program that finally "unlocks" the iPhone. Wait, it's already been done hasn't it? Negative, there is
tremendous difference when it comes to "unlocking" a mobile device and "jailbreaking" a device.

28.01.2009iPhone 3.0 YellowSn0w Exploit found?
In the latest iPhone Dev Team post on their blog, they hint at having found an exploit in
the 3.0 firmware to use with YellowSn0w. However, they stress that it will not be released until 3.0 becomes GM so that it can work for the public
release, and not just with the few select developers who are using 3.0.
"If there is a yellowsn0w update for firmware after 2.2 (or
basebands after 02.28), there is no way it would ever be released before 3.0 is official. It just wouldn't make any sense to release an
exploit for something that only those who have beta 3.0s (NDA signers) could use. Most people in the world arent NDA signers. Any yellowsn0w
update for 3.0 would need to happen *after* 3.0 is officially available."
-Post from iPhone Dev Team Blog
Obviously this is not confirmed even in the least bit, it just shows that the team is hinting at the possibility. There is no word if the new
iPhone will be unlocked OOTB, but it will most likely take some time because of the new hardware that is rumored to be used in the new device.
Stay tuned as we learn more!
