09.07.2007Announcing Windows Server 2008 R2
Windows Server 2008 R2 showed its pretty face at the Professional Developers Conference today, here in Los Angeles. Hi there, my names Oliver Rist and
Im a new technical product manager on the Windows Server team. Im down here in La-La Land heaving great sighs of satisfaction as we unveil the first
sneak peeks of pre-beta Windows Server 2008 R2. Though this release is right in line with our announced roadmap strategy for future Server releases,
there are several items of note with R2:
First and foremost, 32-bit is done. History. Archives. Windows Server 2008 R2 is the
first Windows OS platform to go 64-bit only, and frankly it was high time. Customers have been unable to purchase a 32-bit server CPU for over two
years now, and the advancements in CPU architectures really dictated that we squeeze as much performance out of customers hardware purchases as
possible. The move to 64-bit is a first step.
Youll also find that weve aligned R2 development around four core technology
pillars...

It includes support for remote management of computers that are running either the Server Core or full
installation options of Windows Server 2008 R2, and for some roles and features, Windows Server 2008. Some roles and features on Windows Server 2003
can be managed remotely by using Remote Server Administration Tools for Windows 7, although the Server Core installation option is not available with
the Windows Server 2003 operating system.
This feature is comparable in functionality to the Windows Server 2003 Administrative

12.08.2009Windows Server 2008 R2 RC Includes Important Improvements to Hyper-V Implementation
Cameron Sturdevant: Windows Server 2008 R2 Release Candidate code was made available on April 30 to MSDN and TechNet subscribers. There are many
changes to the operating system. Here, I've highlighted some of the most important improvements in the implementation of Hyper-V. For example,
running guest systems can be configured on the fly to add or remove virtual hard drives. I tested using the newly released Windows 7 Build 7100 along
with the RC build of Windows Server 2008 R2. Changes in User Account Controls, PowerShell and AppLocker are all significant enough that IT managers
should brush off their study skills and buckle down with the newest version of Microsoft's server operating system. Also look for changes in Group
Policy, Active Directory, remote desktop services and deployment services. Even features that didn't change much in functionality usually have a new
address; I spent a fair amount of time during my testing just poking through the user interface, looking for familiar landmarks that had been buried
in new locations.
