23.5.2007Why Windows 'Safe Mode' Isn't So Safe
Windows has, for many years, come with a special mode you can load at boot called Safe Mode. The idea is that non-essential services and software
don't load in safe mode and so it can be useful in diagnosing system problems.
You might assume that it can be useful in fixing
malware infections and you'd be right, but not in all cases. As McAfee's Avert Labs points out in a blog entry,
it's possible for
malware to set itself up to load even in Safe Mode.

24.05.2006Vista To Shed Some of its Dark Side
Thanks to rev23dev for
the heads up on this one...
If you're like me,
you've played with almost
every build of Vista/Longhorn
you could get your little paws
on. The last build I had a
chance to use was RC1, and
several of my top 'Vista
annoyances' were still
present:
- My unsigned
(and rather awesome) kX
drivers no longer work
properly with my Audigy sound
card
- Daemon
Tools/Alcohol 120% still
didn't work. (Thankfully the
folks over at Daemon Tools
recently fixed that)
- I
couldn't stand the dark
looking UI for more than 3
days. (I'm going to miss
patching my uxtheme.dll so
very much. kol, bant,
StefanKa, and b0se have kept
my XP install looking awesome
for years)
Well looks
as though Microsoft has
listened to some of the 'dark
UI' cries and released the
following statement on their
'shell:revealed' blog:
"In the end, we
decided that we like the black
and think it is the right
thing to do, but we want to
respect the user's color
choice for users who bother to
make a change. So -
starting in today's build, we
have significantly backed off
the amount of black that is
mixed in with the user's
color for maximized
windows. This is not
particularly noticeable with
the default color, but with
the more intense colors like
Red and Orange, you will
appreciate the
difference."
Hopefully this will result
in an improved UI experience
for everyone.

04.10.2006Family Safe Computing & Microsoft

David George, Director of

from the article and link
below:
Hi all:
I'd like to introduce you to
David George, Director of
Trustworthy Computing for
Windows Vista and one of the
individuals responsible for
the Family Safe Computing
initiative. David in this
article gives an overview of
the new Parental Controls and
also a little insight into the
philosophy behind their
design. I hope it gives you a
good idea of the span of
control now available in
Windows Vista and helps in
putting the new features to
work for you. --
Nick
As both a
Microsoft employee and a
parent, I am impressed with
the focus on safe computing
for families that Microsoft
has adopted across our product
platforms and services. With
the release of the consumer
versions of Windows Vista,
Microsoft will have parental
controls tools, family
settings, or content controls
across all of our major
platforms (Windows Vista, Xbox
360, Xbox On-Line, Windows
Live/MSN, MSTV, & Zune).
In my job as a
Director of Family Safe
Computing, I am lucky to have
the opportunity to interact
and work with child safety
experts, law enforcement
agencies, governmental
leaders, family safety
software providers, parents,
and many private concerns on a
global basis. Most believe
that the family safe computing
tools we already have released
will have a very positive
effect on empowering parents
to manage their home computing
environment based on their own
family values, and will have
the net effect of providing a
safer computing environment
for children.

05.11.2008Security Bonuses for Vista Programmers
Microsoft has designed new ways to crash Windows Vista, and this is a good thing.
In this era in which software, especially
prominent software, must be presumed to be under attack, you need the best tools to defend yourself. Much has been made of security features built
into Windows Vista, such as IE Protected Mode, which accrue to all users. However, programmers can easily gain new security defenses for their
applications if they code Vista-specific sections in them.

16.06.2008Hidden Vista tools
If Sven Hallauer ever has a moment to reflect in his Redmond office, he can feel quietly pleased with himself.
As the release
manager for Vista, he had overall responsibility during the development period for the success of the Most Secure Windows Ever project.
For Hallauer, however, the flexibility of the new operating system is just as important as the security features. In particular, Vista is
equipped with far better admin tools than previous versions. Previously, administrators were forced to add tools from Resource Kits, but now Vista
comes with a lot of tools already on board, as well explain later.
You can tell just by looking at the increased minimum hardware
requirements that theres a lot more in the new version of Windows. It used to be possible to keep an installation of Windows 95 under 200MB, but Vista
requires 40 times more hard disk space. Even in comparison to Windows XP, Vista needs five times more space.

05.12.2006Microsoft to beef up anti-piracy checks in Vista SP1
Microsoft will change the user experience of its automatic anti-piracy checks in Windows Vista and also make it harder for hackers to bypass the
system in the first service pack for the OS due out early next year. Once Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1) is installed on a PC, that computer will
no longer go into limited functionality mode if a user or administrator fails to activate Vista on that system in 30 days, or if the system fails
Microsoft's Windows Genuine Advantage (WGA) validation, which checks to see if a version of Vista is pirated or counterfeit. In Vista, WGA is
called the Software Protection Program feature.
In limited functionality mode, a computer will shut down after 60 minutes and then allow
only browser use. Now, instead of going into that mode, a version of Vista that has not been activated in 30 days will start up with a black screen
and a dialogue box that gives users the choice of activating Vista now or later, said Alex Kochis, a group product manager at Microsoft.

05.06.2008Microsoft uses green tactics to push Vista
Briony Smith: <...> In a pro-Vista move, the company commissioned a report from Info-Tech Research on the power consumption of Windows XP versus
Windows Vista, which was released today, and announced Vistas energy-efficient supremacy over XP when it comes to sleep mode. The default settings of
Vista put the system into sleep mode much faster and automatically than XP triggers its own standby mode.
Jennifer Colasanti, a
research consultant with Info-Tech Research, said that tests were run on two different laptops and two different PCs in several different states. The
advanced default settings had a definite impact on power consumption. If your business is running a fleet of Vista PCs, then you can reduce your
carbon emissions by half, she said.
