30.8.2007It's Another Vista TCO Study
Microsoft is flaunting a new Windows Vista total cost of ownership study thatno surprisepresents rosy findings.
Wipro
Technologies and GCR Custom Research produced the report, which findings Microsoft presented in a conference call this afternoon. Microsoft's PR
agency dispatched the wrong dial-in number, causing the meeting to start considerably late. My afternoon was packed, so I snatched a PDF of the
LiveMeeting PowerPoint and moved on to other things. A fuller white paper is now available.
The report focuses on Vista TCO
benefits for mobile PCs. GCR concluded that Vista would reduce mobile PC TCO by $605 annually, or 14 percent, compared to Windows XP.
Reports of this type are always suspect, because they are custom commissioned by vendors. When I was an analyst, I worked on several custom
reports used by companies for internal purposes, meaning to improve the business strategy. External custom reports have an inherent bias because the
client is paying for them for a broader marketing objective.. Would Microsoft promote a commissioned report that found Vista TCO to be less than
Windows XP or, gasp, Linux? The answer is obvious.

06.09.2007Debugging a Per-User Installation Error on Windows Vista
Chris Jackson: Yesterday, a friend asked for some assistance debugging an issue with Windows Installer. It was one of those situations where you've
looked at the problem so closely, so many times, that you just needed another set of eyes. (They're close to shipping, so they've been doing nothing
but look at bugs, probably for a while.)
Some background:
What they're doing is a rather interesting use of
Windows Installer. They're using it to drop a setup.exe and then run it. So, they have a custom action of type 0xC02, which is a deferred custom
action, promoted to not use impersonation, which runs as an exe. This custom action spawns another version of itself (with different arguments), and
then the process exits so the installer can complete. The second version of this custom action then wants to uninstall the msi, as well as launch the
setup.exe. So, the msi is just a way to package up the setup.exe.
And, with UAC, it was breaking.

28.06.2006Workaround Discovered For "Clean Install" With Vista Upgrade
DailyTech has posted a 7-step
workaround courtesy of Paul
Thurrott (via Microsoft
internal documents) on how to
perform a clean install with a
Windows Vista Upgrade DVD. Per
Microsoft's new licensing
requirements for Vista, users
are required to install a
Windows Vista Upgrade from
within Windows XP and to make
matters worse, the Windows XP
license is forfeited. The
process may be tedious, but
few will argue when they
compare the price differences
between the upgrade and retail
versions. Here we go:
- Boot from the
Windows Vista Upgrade DVD and
start the setup
program.
- When prompted
to enter your product key, DO
NOT enter it. Click "Next"
and proceed with setup. This
will install Windows Vista as
a 30-day trial.
- When
prompted, select the edition
of Vista which you have
purchased and continue with
setup.
- Once setup has
been completed and you have
been brought to the desktop
for the first time, run the
install program from within
Windows Vista.
- This
time, type in your product key
when prompted.
- When
asked whether to perform an
Upgrade or Custom (advanced)
install, choose Custom
(advanced) to perform a clean
install of Vista. Yes, this
means that you will have to
install Vista for a second
time.
- Once setup has
completed for the second time,
you should be able to activate
Windows Vista normally. You
can also delete the
Windows.old directory which
contains information from the
first Vista
install.

31.01.2007Another Windows Vista SP1 Feature From TechEd
In one of the later session
during TechEd last week I
learned of another very cool
feature coming to Windows
Vista with Service Pack 1.
During his talk Wes Miller,
who is writing a ton for
TechNet magazine these days
mentioned that setup will now
be able to run either 32-bit
or 64-bit installs.
What does this mean?
Well basically a lot less
work for anyone who has to
deal with both 32-bit and
64-bit images. After SP1 you
will be able to deploy either
version of the OS from a
single DVD.
So
what?
Well the
reason this is a big deal is
if you are doing anything
custom with Windows PE then
you currently have to maintain
two boot wims (one 64 and one
32) and in extreme cases where
you have custom code you have
to maintain to codebase sets
because 64-bit WinPE doesn't
support 32bit code due to the
lack of WOW support .
It wasn't clear if WDS
would also offer this
capability, but it would make
sense.

15.06.2007Microsoft Seeks Ultimate Windows Media Center Installation
Calling all custom installers! Microsoft Corp. is searching for the custom installation industrys innovators to submit distinctive installations for
the Windows® Media Center Ultimate Install Contest. The first of its kind, this design contest seeks to recognize the residential custom electronics
systems installation business that best utilizes Windows Media Center in a custom installation solution.
Increasingly, Windows
Media Center is being implemented in solutions for the custom channel, so Microsoft is challenging industry professionals to present their most unique
and creative installations using the technology. The contest was announced at CEDIA EXPO 2007.
This is a chance not only to show
the amazing things custom installers can do with the Windows Media Center platform, but also to have some fun, said Scott Evans, group manager in the
Entertainment and Devices eHome Division at Microsoft. Our partners in the custom channel are taking our software and building incredible digital
home solutions, so we decided now was a great time to give them the chance to showcase their best work and compete to be recognized as the ultimate
MCE installer.

05.09.2007Beautiful Windows Vista icons a double-edged sword
I admit it. I'm an iconphile. Back in the Windows 3.0 days, I used to go and change all my Windows icons by hand. I thought this was pretty
impressive. Admittedly, it didn't help me pick up women for some reason.
Since then, icons have come a very long way. A VERY long way.
With Windows Vista, the end-user icon experience out of the box is beautiful. But from an icon creator's point of view, the lack of backward
compatibility and effort to support has gone up tremendously. As a result, we've seen a lot fewer custom icons made for Windows Vista than one might
have expected.
Microsoft made three decisions with Windows Vista that will forever affect the way we look at icon making on Windows.

12.12.2006Microsoft Extends XP Life Again
Windows XP has risen from the grave so many times, it now has more in common with Friday the 13th's Jason Voorhees than it does with other PC
operating systems.
Though its successor Windows Vista has been on the market for over two years and yet another Windows version, Windows
7, will ship in just months, Microsoft has again extended the time frame for consumers who wish to continue using the seven-year-old XP. This time
around, the company is allowing custom PC builders alternatively called "system builders" and "white box PC makers" to continue ordering XP for
their PCs through May 30, 2009.
The previous deadline was January 31, 2009, so the extension gives custom PC builders an extra four
months to get their XP orders in. After that time, they can continue selling PCs with Windows XP only for as long as their XP stock lasts.

"I

Cincinnati, Columbus,
Pittsburgh, Philadelphia,
Baltimore, Washington DC,

You can

cities as well as on the road.
Why would you want to? First
off, there will be a custom
designed coach bus based
around the Windows Vista
"energy" theme (Vista's
default wallpaper). This
isn't just Microsoft we're
talking about; AMD will be
part of the branding too. The
coach will be equipped with
free Wi-Fi so that you can
fully utilize, in the very
comfortable lounge area, the
numerous systems running
Windows Vista. An Xbox 360

Secondly, features such as
Ultimate Extras, speech
recognition, Tablet

23.05.2006Despite deadlines, Windows XP to be sold a few more years
June 30 of this year and Jan. 31, 2009, may be the deadlines for U.S. retailers and custom system builders, respectively, to sell Windows XP. But, due
to exceptions Microsoft has made, the operating system will be available for at least the next two years for those who purchased business and Ultimate
versions of Vista, as well as for customers in certain geographies.
Microsoft has made it widely known that it will stop
distributing XP to U.S. manufacturers and retailers on June 30, while custom system builders can put XP on hardware until Jan. 31, 2009. But what is
probably less known -- and not because Microsoft has been hiding the fact -- is that Windows XP Starter Edition, a scaled-down version of the OS for
emerging markets, will be available until June 30, 2010.
Moreover, business and end-users who have purchased Windows Vista
Business or Ultimate licenses either at retail or through enterprise agreements with Microsoft have indefinite "downgrade" rights to XP as part of
their license agreements, according to a Microsoft spokeswoman.
