14.02.2007Latest MS Update Causing Major Headaches
Broadband
Reports is running a story
regarding the latest MS update
to fix problems with animated
cursors.
"Users in
our Security forum note that
the latest critical Microsoft
Windows update (KB925902) is
causing all kinds of problems.
Most notably, it prevents some
users from loading anti-virus
software, but others say the
update prevented them from
booting entirely. "So far, we
have errors with AVG, Realtec,
F-Secure, a false positive of
a Trojan, a messed up Vaio,
USB problems and Accessories
and Utilities all vanishing
into thin air," says one
security forum regular."
I have personally
installed this on two Vista
machines and one of them
failed to boot after the patch
was installed. Unfortuntely
patches that are often pushed
out too quickly to fix
critical flaws cause adverse
issues on certain
configurations as we have
witnessed in the past. Watch
out for Microsoft rectifying
this with an update to the
patch. Until then do not
install the update if it's
causing issues to your machine
and report these directly to
Microsoft support.

05.04.2007Beta API to help MapQuest developers add mapping features
Denver-based online mapping
vendor MapQuest Incorporated
has released a new beta API
that allows software
developers to use Adobe
Systems Incorporated's
ActionScript 3.0 programming
language to create richer
online applications and
capabilities for MapQuest
users. ActionScript, the
object-oriented programming
language of the Flash Player
runtime, enables efficient
programming of Flash
applications for everything
from simple animations to
complex, data-rich,
interactive application
interfaces, according to
Adobe.
By adding
the ActionScript API to
MapQuest's expanding
Advantage API tool kit,
developers will have new ways
to add features that can help
users get more detailed
mapping information, including
complex animations and
graphics as well as new ways
to display points of interest
along the way. MapQuest's
Advantage API brings together
a robust location-based
platform with the flexibility
and efficiency of a Web
service, the company said. The
new ActionScript API
" offers the possibility of
enhanced interactivity, lower
development costs and faster
time to market while providing
all the same great mapping,
routing, geocoding and search
feature sets that customers
rely on from MapQuest ,"
said Christian Dwyer, vice
president of business
solutions and operations for
MapQuest.

30.05.2007Google releases new Android SDK
Google released a new version of the software developer kit for its Android mobile open development platform on Wednesday.
The new SDK has
a new user interface, a geocoder that lets developers search for businesses as well as translate an address into a coordinate and vice versa, support
for new media codecs, and code that lets developers create layout animations. One thing missing is change to the telephony package, laments one
developer on the Android Developer discussion on Google Groups.

02.09.2008Microsofts Weird "Hey Genius" Jobs Site
Microsoft must run at least a million web sites by now (not including millions of Live Spaces), and I’d bet at least a third of them are job
recruiting sites. Witness one of the latest ones, "
Hey Genius", with strange black and white Flash
animations (that move in a really cool way when clicked), designed,
according to Valleywag, to make
Microsoft look like a hipster startup.

18.12.2007Firefox 2.0 vs. IE7 in Vista: How Close?
Whatever Firefox 2.0 is, it
isn't "sweeping," and
nowhere does that fact become
more evident than in a Windows

started up both IE7 and FF2 in
Vista, and were left
wondering, will Firefox users
be happy using their browser

degree of changes they'd

26.10.2006Update: "Vista Capable" trial
The ongoing "Vista Capable" class-action lawsuit against Microsoft took an interesting turn the other day when an expert witness for the plaintiffs
claimed that the Redmond company made more than $1.5 billion through their "Vista Capable" marketing campaign. The origins of the trial itself
are to be found in the months prior to Vista's release when many computers were sold with Windows XP and the promise that they would be capable of
running Vista. However, many of these PCs, which sold at a premium and bore the "Vista Capable" label, turned out to be only capable of running
Vista Basic. Hence, Microsoft is being sued for what many would call false advertising.

11.12.2007Neowin at Digital Life 2007: Microsoft's Booth
Microsoft took a three pronged approach to their booth this year. They decided to focus on Vista (again), Games for Windows, and Windows Mobile.
Surprisingly, the Xbox 360 and Halo 3 were not highlighted in the least bit.
It actually surprised me to see Microsoft pushing Vista so
hard, still. Compared to last year, before Vista was released, this year's Vista display was even larger and more in your face. There were more
kiosks, sofas, and lots of Vista logos on anything that could bare one. We know about Vista, though, so let's move on.

01.10.2007Google Earth adds weather to its repertoire
As of today,
Google Earth can finally tell you what the weather is like while you zoom
around the 3D representation of our planet. The app has a new layer that lets you toggle cloud cover, Doppler radar, and conditions and forecasts,
which will show you what's on tap in each region using information aggregated from Weather.com.
There's also an
"information" link that has more background about each of the services and links to download the 6- and 24-hour cloud animations, which can be
controlled using playback buttons in the top right of your screen. It looks just like you've seen on any TV weather report, except you have complete
control on the playback slider, and can drag is backward and forward ad nauseum to bend the clouds to your will (it's great fun).

When you try to install Windows Vista SP1 via Windows Update you can get error: Windows Vista Service Pack 1 is not available for installation from
Windows Update and is not offered by Automatic Updates.
To help ensure a positive update experience, Windows Update will temporarily not
offer Windows Vista SP1 to systems that have the following device drivers. In some cases, these device drivers are problematic on Windows Vista-based
computers when you update to Windows Vista SP1. By installing updated device drivers, you will resolve the issue and enable Windows Update to offer

30.06.2006Microsoft won't ditch Vista until at least 2011
Even after the release of Windows 7, it looks like Microsoft won't be quick to ditch Vista according to Computer World. Microsoft plans to
continue selling Vista until January 2011. However, they will drop support for Vista in less than 3 years. This seems to go against an earlier hint
by a Microsoft General Manager that the company would get rid of Vista as soon as Windows 7 was released. However, Microsoft not ditching Vista as
soon as Windows 7 is released shouldn't come as a surprise. It's a company policy to keep an OS in distribution for 4 years after its debut.
So what do you think, Neowin?
