receiving much positive feedback than expected from the beta testers, we had Long Zheng and Rafael, two Windows enthusiasts, come with a proof that
malware can turn off UAC in Windows 7. Later Microsoft responded insisting that this is by design and actually not a bug. Later, again, we had Zheng
and Rafael come out with a second flaw which showed Windows 7 UAC was still flawed. At this time, everybody thought Microsoft had done the right thing
with Windows Vista UAC and compromised security over consumers' feedback in Windows 7.

05.03.2009Download the first 100 issues of Computer Gaming World free!
As some of you may or may
not know, Computer Gaming
World is dead. November's
issue of CGW is the last issue
ever for the magazine, at
least with that name. In
December's issue, the
magazine relaunches with the
new super cool name of
Games for Windows: The
Official Magazine. I
posted about this story awhile
back, but I saw this and
thought, wow now that is way
cool. Seems some of the
editors decided to take the
first 100 issues of CGW and
put them in PDF format for
everyone to download and
enjoy. Now you can download
the first 100 issues and read
them all you want, but they
also have every single
magazine cover as well, though
after issue 100 obviously
there is no content besides
the cover. I do not know if
they plan on converting the
rest of the issues and
uploading them, but I assume
eventually it will
happen.
For those that have never
heard of CGW, or aren't up to
snuff with PC gaming
magazines, Computer Gaming
World was first launched back
in November 1981. Since then
they have published 268
issues, and they have seen
every change that has ever
happened in the PC gaming
industry first hand. From the
Atari to the Apple II all the
way to current super high end
rigs, they've seen it all,
and covered it all. So if you
are a fan of CGW, or if you
are just interested in the
wonderful history of PC
gaming, check the issues out.
Just be warned, if you want to
download all 100 issues, be
prepared for a rather long
read.

Adobe: No Plans to Make Current Products Vista Compatible
According to a statement
posted on Adobe's Web site,
Photoshop, InDesign,
Dreamweaver won't be getting
updates to run on Windows
Vista, users will have to
shell out the cash for new
versions (slated for shipping
this spring) that support
Microsoft's new operating
system. Current versions of
most of Adobe's major
products won't work properly
on the new operating system
(note: I'm running Photoshop
CS2 just fine, but others may
have issues such as having to
register the software every
time it is launched).
Dreamweaver 8, Adobe warns,
will crash on some Vista
computers when users browse
for files. InDesign customers,
meanwhile, may get a false
error message indicating they
do not have enough available
disk space to run the product.
Adobe lists a number of other
known Windows Vista
compatibility problems for
those and other products.
Additionally, Adobe Acrobat 8
encounters errors when run
atop the new Windows OS, but
the company says it plans to
issue a free patch in the
first half of 2007 to resolve
those issues.

Identifying 32-bit Kernel Memory Issues
Clint Huffman: I'm a Premier Field Engineer (PFE) and I go onsite with customers on a regular basis to conduct Health Checks. This is my first blog
posting on TechNet, but I figured it would be on something important versus "Hello World". ;-)
More and more I am seeing
customers who are not aware of kernel memory issues on the 32-bit Windows architecture. If you are running 32-bit Windows 2000 or 32-bit Windows 2003,
then check the kernel memory. Lack of kernel memory can lead to system-wide hangs which seem unexplainable, so this is a serious issue. Always
generally use and/or recommend 64-bit or Windows Server 2008 server to avoid these issues (Windows Server 2008 and Windows Vista have automatically
adjusting kernel memory pool sizes). This issue and other performance issues are addressed in the Vital Signs workshop (written by Shane Creamer),
which can be delivered by my team, Premier Field Engineering (PFE) - just contact your Technical Account Manager (TAM) if you are interested in this
course.
Here is a kernel memory chart for Windows 2003 Server...

Windows 7 Compatibility Issues May Mar Enterprise Adoption
eWEEK Labs' early tests of Windows 7 RC 1 show that the operating system installs and runs quickly and efficiently; is highly polished for this stage

either Windows Vista or XP. However, Microsoft's method for dealing with application compatibility--Windows XP Mode for Windows 7, or XPM--leaves

October 2007 MSDN Magazine now online
The October 2007 issue of MSDN Magazine is now available online at http://msdn.microsoft.com/msdnmag/issues/07/10/default.aspx.
In this issue you'll find coverage of some advanced concurrency topics. We have articles on employing the new thread pool APIs in Windows Server 2008 to provide more
control and scalability, using the UI thread and the Dispatcher to build more responsive Windows Presentation Foundation apps,
harnessing the Task Parallel Library to optimize your .NET apps for
multi-core processors, and Joe Duffy and Ed Essey introduce Parallel
Language Integrated Query (PLINQ).
For something completely different, Chris Mitchell shows you a Windows Mobile application that adjusts your ringtone volume
based on the ambient noise level.
In the columns we take a look at take a look at type inference and LINQ in Visual Basic 2008, and explore Windows XP Embedded UI test automation. Dino Esposito continues his
discussion of the AJAX application architecture, Stephen Toub
builds a .NET deadlock monitor, and Charles Petzold
demonstrates how to create 3D text in WPF.
There's much more in the issue, and I'll be blogging about these and other articles throughout the month.
As usual, the
issue is available online in a bunch of languages: English, French, Spanish, German, Italian, Portuguese, Russian, Traditional Chinese, Simplified Chinese, Korean, and Japanese.

Windows Vista Service Pack 1 Beta Whitepaper
When developing Windows Vista, Microsoft set out to provide higher levels of productivity, mobility, and security, with lower costs. After more than
six months of broad availability and usage, it's evident that these investments are improving the Windows computing experience. For example, in the
first six months of use, Windows Vista had fewer security issues than Windows XP (Windows Vista had only 12 issues, and Windows XP had 36). According
to the Windows Vista 6-Month Vulnerability Report by Jeffery R. Jones, Windows Vista had fewer security issues than all the popular operating systems
he studied.
Although most companies are cautious when deploying a new operating system, many have already started testing and
evaluating Windows Vista for deployment, and some have already deployed Windows Vista into their production environments and begun seeing the business
benefits Windows Vista can provide.
Microsoft's efforts to provide the best Windows experience ever in Windows Vista did not end
with its launch. This white paper describes the ways Microsoft strives to continuously improve Windows Vista. It then introduces Windows Vista Service
Pack 1 (SP1) and describes how the service pack will fit into the ongoing improvement process.
