The high price of creating free ads
From an advertiser's perspective, it sounds so easy: invite the public to create commercials for your brand, hold a contest to pick the best one and sit back while average Americans do the creative work.

Nofollow for Ads?
The search engines have become the gatekeepers of the internet. As a webmaster – if you don’t play along by their rules, you won’t be getting any high rankings: the so called holy grail for websites. Matt Cutts – Google employee – has made it very clear ... that buying and selling links is not corresponding with the webmaster guidelines and to be found a non-ethical practice because it’s not ’natural’.

Trojan Emits Bogus, Risqu? Google AdSense Ads
A Trojan horse program is churning out bogus Google ads promoting products Google eschews?gambling, cheap Viagra, girlie photos and adult dating.
The ads, being targeted at small publishers, are identical to Google AdSense ads except that referral graphic buttons are being converted to text, apparently due to a bug in the Trojan, according to the publisher who reportedly discovered the Trojan. That publisher, Raoul Bangera, told Techshout.com that the non-contextual and risqu? content of the ads are what set them apart from regular AdSense ads.

19.07.2007Microsoft: Windows ads to make sense someday
Todd Bishop: <...> At least to my sense of humor, the latest ads are funnier than the first. But as before, there is only a passing reference to
Windows in the TV ads, at the end of the second part. That's by design, the company says.
"It's creating interest, buzz, and
just getting people talking about Windows," said Craig Cincotta, a senior Windows product manager, via phone this afternoon. "When people see what
we're doing with some of the other elements that are going to be coming out ... our approach to it will continue to make even more sense."

06.02.2006Google to Sell TV Ads for NBC Universal
NBC Universal, a unit of General Electric Co, is teaming up with Google Inc on a multi-year partnership in which Google will act as a broker to sell
TV advertising on some NBC cable channels. In a joint statement, the two companies said NBC Universal will offer advertising time from several of its
cable networks for Google to sell advertising through its Google TV Ads service.
The deal, set to go into effect in coming months, covers
advertising inventory on Sci Fi, Oxygen, MSNBC, CNBC, Sleuth, and Chiller, with more NBC Universal channels possible in the future, the companies
said. "Advertisers using the Google TV Ads platform can reach NBCU Cable's national audience and gain access to viewership data at an
unprecedented scale," the NBC Universal and Google statement said.

09.09.2008The Top 10 Most Annoying, Frustrating, Irritating, and Sinister Online Ads
Today's annoying online ads are a mix of Big Brother meets Madison Avenue, old-fashioned in-your-face marketing, and tactics that are downright
mean. I rounded up a list of today's ten most annoying online ad categories. Many of them probably have you longing for the days when the most pesky
ads promoted an X-10 wireless camera.
Some of these ads flash, blink, vibrate, and somersault around your browser window. Others
expand, pop open a window (even if you have a pop-up blocker), and play sounds or video. The most sinister don't appear to do anything at all and
quietly attempt to hijack your PC.
What's behind this new breed of advertising? Naturally, money is greasing the wheels of
online ad innovation. Consider eMarketer's forecast, which indicates that U.S. Internet companies are spending $21.4 billion in 2007 on online ads.
That budget will grow--by 2011, an estimated $42 billion will go toward online ads, according to eMarketer.

16.01.2007YouTube to trial pre-video ads
YouTube is to run a trial of "pre-roll" video ads on selected content from several broadcasters starting from today. The pre-roll ads are short
video ads shown before the video you requested and could be up to 30 seconds long. Advertisements will start appearing around videos from BBC
Worldwide, ITN, Discovery, National Geographic and - from today - Channel 4. The idea for this form of advertising was first discussed over 2 years
ago, back in 2007, so it has taken a while for the plans to come to fruition. These ads will be sold on a CPM (cost per mille) basis where the
advertiser pays a certain price for every one thousand views of an ad.

23.05.2006Twitter confirms paid pro accounts coming
It's been debated for a while now about whether or not Twitter, a popular social networking service, will begin including a paid pro account for
use. Well, as the Wall Street Journal reports, Twitter itself has confirmed the news that a paid account is coming. The company has recently hired a
product manager to organize the development of these accounts. Twitter has become very popular with not only the average consumer, but celebrities
and companies as well, many using it to promote products or hold competitions. This may be causing problems for the company; why would companies pay
Twitter to display ads when they can already broadcast ads using the service for free?

26.03.2009MSN puts ads on mobile phones
Microsoft began displaying advertisements to mobile users of its MSN site in the U.S. on Monday.Paramount Pictures and Jaguar Cars North America are
among the first companies to advertise on MSN Mobile in the U.S. Microsoft already displays mobile ads in Belgium, France, Japan, Spain, and the U.K.
The technology that presents the ads comes from ScreenTonic, a company that Microsoft acquired earlier this year.
Microsoft trails its
biggest competitors in the PC-based online advertising market in bringing ads to mobile users, but its late start may not have any significant effect.
"AOL and Yahoo have previously introduced display ads, but the mobile user base is still on the small side compared to the Net, so they're
not truly late," said Greg Sterling, an analyst following mobile search as part of a joint venture between Sterling Market Research and Opus
Research. "It's not like there's a huge opportunity cost here or revenue lost." Google also supports ads for mobile users.

16.07.2009New service eavesdrops on Internet calls
A startup has come up with a new way to make money from phone calls connected via the Internet: having software listen to the calls, then displaying
ads on the callers' computer screens based on what's being talked about.
For instance, a caller talking about going for dinner
might see ads to local restaurants and restaurant review sites, while someone pondering whether to buy a new computer might see ads for computer
stores. Relevant unsponsored links also appear.
That is, if the system works. It's notoriously difficult for computers to
recognize speech. A test of Puddingmedia's beta software was a mixed success: Relevant ads appeared when this reporter talked about restaurants and
computers, but the software was oddly insistent that he should seek a career as a social worker, showing multiple ads and links pointing to that
field...

24.09.2007Ads that watch you back
Yahoo is reporting that whenever you happen to be looking at an ad in the subway, on the way to work, or even at the mall, there is an increasing
chance that the ad could be looking right back at you. Recently, advertisers have began to hide small cameras, either embedded in the ad itself or
around the ad, that identify people who are looking at it. This means that the ad can change accordingly to the viewer, taking 'personalized
ads' to an entire new level. As it stands at the moment, the ads cannot currently identify people individually, Minority Report-style, but
recognizes "outward appearances".
