27.11.2005How To Create a Bootable DVD for Windows Vista (or any Windows for that matter)
If it's been a while since you've needed a boot disk for your Windows machine, you may just be struggling with how exactly to do it. It's not like
the old Windows 98 boot floppy where I could just go into Windows Explorer and make one with a couple of quick clicks of the mouse. However, you need
not worry, since the current process is surprisingly well documented by Microsoft.
What may seem, at first, to be a complex task
is actually fairly simple. There are essentially seven steps to create a bootable DVD or bootable UFD (USB Flash Drive), all of which are command line
based. While the seven steps are relatively straightforward, the Microsoft article outlining those steps has a slightly obscure title: "
Walkthrough:
Create a Custom Windows PE Image." Anyway, this Walkthrough, for all intents and purposes, is a step-by-step how-to for creating a bootable DVD
disk.

16.11.2006Microsoft Vista Undelete
Sparks More Facts
The Inquirer's recent
examination of the
'undelete' technology in
Windows Vista has become more
important since Apple formally
announced 'Time Machine' in
Leopard, the next iteration of
OSX.
Unfortunately Apple's Time
Machine requires a separate
disk, dedicated to the
backing-up of data on your
primary drive. Useful in the
case of a hard-disk failure,
but not exactly the cheapest
option. It also seems to have
an esoteric GUI, which may or
may not work well in real-word
usage.
Windows
Vista's alternative backup
application is very similar,
albeit without the
over-the-top interface, and
also comes with a Shadow Copy
feature that's integrated
into the normal file/folder
menus, and has some
interesting attributes of its
own.

17.08.2006Toshiba to join the Blu-ray Disk Association
Toshiba has announced that it will be joining the BDA (Blu-ray Disk Association) which is the final chapter to the format war of HD-DVD vs Blu-ray.
Toshiba who was the largest heavy-hitter backing the HD-DVD format was in a fierce battle against Blu-ray which was largely impart developed by Sony.
When Sony bundled a Blu-ray drive in its PS3 console it gave the format its entrance into millions of homes for which HD-DVD was unable to compete
against. "In light of recent growth in digital devices supporting the Blu-ray format, combined with market demand from consumers and retailers
alike, Toshiba has decided to join the BDA.

22.06.2007Research Firm Predicts New Copyright Protection Technologies for Blu-Ray, HD DVD
After it became clear that the widely-discussed Advanced Access Content System (AACS) copyright protection technology is not a panacea against copying
and ripping high-definition videos from Blu-ray and HD DVD discs, the studios did not react. However, this does not mean that no new copyright
protection technologies are in the works.
ABI Research market research company in its recent study predicts implementation of a
new security technology to restrict end-users content management abilities. For example, makers of DVD players and Blu-ray/HD DVD publishers can alter
necessary security keys, which will require to update firmware of a player to allow playback of new content.
śDesigners of AACS
contemplated such a problem and made it possible to revoke a compromised player. The revocation feature is a significant new capability of the HD DVD
content protection system, as players can be revoked by changing the disk key on new DVD releases. This key, when combined with a targeted player key,
will fail to create a key that can descramble the disk contents. And in order for the new disks to work, the player needs to be updated to a new
version,ť said ABI Research principal analyst Steve Wilson.

27.09.2007How long does it take to create a 16TB file?
Although
the theoretical maximum file size on NTFS is 2
64−1 clusters,
the current implementation of the NTFS driver supports files
up
to "only" 16TB minus 64KB.
(In other words, the disk format supports files up to
2
64−1 clusters,
but the
current drivers won't go above 16TB−64KB.)
Back in 2002,
in order to verify that the drivers did indeed support files
as big as their design maximum,
the NTFS test team sat down,
created a volume slightly bigger than 16TB,
and then created a file of
the maximum supported size,
filling it with a known pattern.
After the file was successfully created,
they then ran another program that
read the entire file back into
memory and verified that the contents were correct.
(They ran other tests, too, of course, but those are the
ones that
are important to this story.)
How long did it take to create this nearly-16TB file?
Around
three days.

12.02.2008Engineering Windows 7 : Disk Space
Windows disk space consumption has trended larger over time. While not desirable, the degree to which it's been allowed is due in large part to
ever-increasing hard drive capacity, combined with a customer need and engineering focus that focused heavily on recover ability, data protection,
increasing breadth of device support, and demand for innovative new features. However, the proliferation of Solid State Drives (SSDs) has challenged
this trend, and is pushing Windows 7 to consider disk "footprint" in a much more thoughtful way and take that into account for Windows 7.

21.11.20087 Whole-Disk Encryption Apps Put A Lock On Data
Few IT professionals need to be lectured about data security. All too frequently we hear of the theft or loss of a computer or hard drive with data
stored in the clear -- without encryption.
Fortunately, on-the-fly data encryption is no longer some exotic, costly beast.
Rather than just encrypting single files, some applications are able to create virtual disks, either within a file or directly on a partition, where
everything written to the disk is automatically encrypted. On modern hardware, the overhead for encryption is minimal; you no longer need dedicated
hardware to make this happen.

11.01.2008First Pirated HD DVD Movie Hits BitTorrent
Pirates decided that the copy
protection scheme for HD DVD
was worth a shot. The result?
The movie is entitled Serenity
and was made available as a
.EVO file which is playable on
most DVD playback software
packages. The file was encoded
in MPEG-4 VC-1 resulting in
19.6 GB worth of hard disk
space. The first
full-resolution rip of an HD
DVD movie on BitTorrent. Who
knows, maybe this is yet
another factor in the HD
war.
An
announcement less than a month
ago by an anonymous programmer
known as Muslix64 specified
that the copy protection on HD
DVD had been bypassed. The
open-source program to
implement this was called
BackupHDDVD. The software
cleverly avoids (for how
long?) legal justice by
placing the responsibility of
cracking on the user, not the
software. To extract an
unencrypted copy of the HD DVD
source material the user has
to fetch that disc's volume
or title key.
CyberLink, the makers of
PowerDVD playback software,
have already assured everyone
that their software is not
responsible for extracting the
title keys from the media.
Content providers, on the
other hand, have declared that
they reserve the right to
invalidate known pirated keys
in the future. Of course, they
will have to figure out which
application gets the volume
keys (Cyberlink has not yet
been cleared). Future titles
could potentially require, as
soon as a disc is inserted,
that the user upgrade their
software in order to play
discs.

10.08.2008Inside Vista SP1 File Copy Improvements
Mark Russinovich: Windows Vista SP1 includes a number of enhancements over the original Vista release in the areas of application compatibility,
device support, power management, security and reliability. You can see a detailed list of the changes in the Notable Changes in Windows Vista Service
Pack 1 whitepaper that you can download
here. One
of the improvements highlighted in the document is the increased performance of file copying for multiple scenarios, including local copies on the
same disk, copying files from remote non-Windows Vista systems, and copying files between SP1 systems. How were these gains achieved? The answer is a
complex one and lies in the changes to the file copy engine between Windows XP and Vista and further changes in SP1. Everyone copies files, so I
thought it would be worth taking a break from the śCase of¦ť posts and dive deep into the evolution of the copy engine to show how SP1 improves its
performance.
Copying a file seems like a relatively straightforward operation: open the source file, create the destination, and
then read from the source and write to the destination. In reality, however, the performance of copying files is measured along the dimensions of
accurate progress indication, CPU usage, memory usage, and throughput. In general, optimizing one area causes degradation in others. Further, there is
semantic information not available to copy engines that could help them make better tradeoffs. For example, if they knew that you werent planning on
accessing the target of the copy operation they could avoid caching the files data in memory, but if it knew that the file was going to be immediately
consumed by another application, or in the case of a file server, client systems sharing the files, it would aggressively cache the data on the
destination system.
