24.07.2009Rafael's at it Again
As a lot of people are aware, Rafael from Within Windows has been finding and exposing un-released Windows 7 features, most notably the "Superbar"
and Desktop Slideshows.
He has now created a full unlocking tool called "Blue Badge" that will unlock the following features:
- The Superbar
- Gestures and Panning (for use on touch screens)
- Desktop Slideshows
Please note two things:
1. This application does NOT back up any of the files it patches, so to be safe, you will need to back up these files:
WindowsExplorer.exe
WindowsSystem32wisptis.exe
WindowsSystem32ieframe.dll
WindowsSystem32shell32.dll
WindowsSystem32stobject.dll
WindowsSystem32TabletPC.cpl
WindowsSystem32themecpl.dll
WindowsSystem32themeui.dll
WindowsSystem32powercfg.cpl
-----------
2. This application IS compatible
with systems currently running the superbar who want to extend their desktop to allow the three other features.

10.11.2008Windows 7 Ultimate cracked and activated with OEM master key
Windows 7 has yet to even be released officially to the general public, and already the dodgy folk on the Internet have fully cracked and activated
the Ultimate version, with help from a leaked Lenovo OEM DVD .ISO file. The news comes from website My Digital Life who state that you can already
pass Windows Genuine Advantage validation offline, OEM style. The leaked .ISO was originally posted on a Chinese forum, which was then downloaded in
order for people to get hold of the boot.wim, and in turn retrieving the OEM-SLP key, plus the OEM activation certificate. Microsoft uses the same
digitally signed OEM certificate, which has an .xrm-ms extension, as that in Windows Vista.

DLL should be contacted for a
new DLL.
This problem occurs when the

This problem may
occur after you install
security update 925902
(MS07-017) and security update
928843 (MS07-008). The
Hhctrl.ocx file that is
included in security update
928843 and the User32.dll file
that is included in security
update 925902 have conflicting
base addresses. This problem
occurs if the program loads
the Hhctrl.ocx file before it
loads the User32.dll file.

04.04.2007Symantec false positive cripples thousands of Chinese PCs
A signature update to
Symantec's anti-virus
software crippled thousands of
Chinese PCs Friday when the
security software took two
critical Windows .dll files
for malware.
According to numerous blog
entries from Chinese computer
users, a virus signature
database seeded yesterday
mistook two system files of a
Chinese edition of Windows XP
SP2 as a Trojan horse which
Symantec dubs
"Backdoor.Haxdoor." The
anti-virus software -- Norton
AntiVirus, for example, or the
anti-virus component of the
Norton 360 or Norton Internet
Security suites -- then
quarantined the netapi32.dll
and lsasrv.dll files.
"With these files
removed, Windows XP will no
longer start up, and even the
system Safe Mode no longer
functions," said one user
writing to the
alt.comp.anti-virus newsgroup
this morning...

Rafael Rivera from Within Windows has announced that UxStyle Core beta now available for download. To give us some information on what UxStyle Core
is, we'll start with a little history. Back in the Windows XP days, users were able to modify a system file called Uxtheme.dll and create custom
.msstyle files, thus creating their own desktop themes to replace the default "Luna" theme. However, over time, patching went from just one file
to multiple files and repatching was necessary when Microsoft would update the Uxtheme.dll files.

Hulu is trying to keep its content restricted to traditional browsers. By doing so it hopes to shut down clients such as Boxee and other apps that
enable the websites content to be distributed over non traditional browsers. Milliesoft "h
come across an interesting development with Hulu
this morning. They have started encoding the html that they send to people's browsers, and then decoding it using javascript before
rendering it." This appears to be an on going battle against non traditional means of displaying Hulu's content. The reasoning may be revenue
based as the site may not receive proper views or clicks when viewed in such manor.

HD DVD anti-rip encryption cracked
Has the HD DVD next-generation
optical disc format's
anti-rip technology been
cracked? That's certainly
what's being claimed by a
programmer going by the name
muslix64 who has posted a
Java-based app he maintains
will free the video on a disc
from its encryption
shackles.
HD DVD
used the AACS copy-protection
system to encode content. So
does the Blu-ray Disc format,
though it adds a couple of
extra anti-piracy techniques
to boost its level of
protection. According to
muslix64's posting on a Doom9
forum, nosing around his PC's
memory, he found his test
disc's title encryption key
and was able to use to copy
the movie to his hard drive
and decrypt the video.

Norton Antivirus targets Windows files on Chinese computers
Chinese PCs running Symantec
antivirus software have been
incapacitated by a faulty
virus signature update
delivered automatically to
users on Friday about 1:00
a.m. Beijing time. Symantec's
antivirus scanning engine
mistook two critical system
files (netapi32.dll and
lsasrv.dll) of the Simplified
Chinese edition of Windows XP
Service Pack 2 for a Trojan
horse, then falsely
quarantined them, which in
turn crippled Windows. If an
affected PC was rebooted,
Windows failed on start-up and
showed only a blue screen.
According to China's
state-sponsored Xinhau News
Agency the number of PCs were
in the millions while other
reports cited numbers as low
as 7,000 affected PCs;
crippled systems were said to
be concentrated in Beijing,
Shanghai and Guangzhou
province.
Symantec
re-released a revised
signature update around 2:30
p.m. Friday, Beijing time, but
the fix was too late for any
PC that had been rebooted in
the intervening 13.5 hours.
Those now-worthless systems
needed new copies of the two
.dll files restored to the
hard drive's
"windowssystem32" directory.
Symantec posted a support
document on its
Chinese-language Web site that
outlined how to use the
Windows XP installation CD to
start the PC and use the
Recovery Console to replace
the quarantined netapi32.dll
and lsasrv.dll with new
copies. There was no notice of
the update problem or the
solution on the site's front
page, or on the company's
English global home page. Many
PC makers now forgo
installation or restore CDs
meaning users would have to
obtain copies of the two .dll
files from another working PC.

iPhone Encryption Can be Cracked?.. In Under Two Minutes!
One major barrier to entry into the business world is security. RIM has earned a solid reputation with reliable and secure data transmissions along
with Microsoft
. As Apple attempts to show that its platform is ready for the business world, a well known hacker is claiming that the phones
encryption can be cracked in less than two minutes.
The ease of use of the iPhone is what is attracting many to the platform. With its
finger friendly OS and an application database that is growing at incredible rates; compatibility is expanding each and every week.
Encrypting message is something every organization relies on in-case the mobile equipment accidentally falls into the wrong hands to prevent trade
secrets from being stolen. Jonathan Zdziarski, a well known iPhone hacker, claims that "I don't think any of us have ever seen
encryption implemented so poorly before, which is why it's hard to describe why it's such a big threat to security." He claims that he was only
using off the shelf software
and compromised the iPhone in under two minutes.
Until Apple has proven the strength of its encryption it
may take longer for widespread corporate adoption. As the user base of the iPhone continues to grow it will become a larger target for malicious users
who wish to inflict harm on individuals and corporations; security can never be overlooked.

WPA is going the way of WEP, cracked in 15 minutes flat
According to PC World the days of securing your WIFI network using Wi-Fi Protected Access
(WPA) may be over, as researcher Erik Tews will show how he was able to crack WPA encryption in around 15 minutes at a the Tokyo PacSec Conference in two weeks time.
WPA was designed to overcome the insecurities in
hacked Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP) which can be hacked in a few minutes using a modern laptop.
Erik Tews will be demonstrating how he
cracked the WPA encryption to read the data being sent from a router to a laptop.
To read the data being sent Tews found a way to crack
the Temporal Key Integrity Protocol (TKIP) key without resorting to using a dictionary attack which, security experts have agreed that the protocol
might be vulnerable too.
Although this is a big step Tews was still unable to crack the keys used to encrypt the data being sent back to the
router from the laptop.
If the demonstration lives up to its headline then the days of WPA look to be numbered. This would come as a big
blow to both consumers and corporations alike.
WPA is the most common standard of encryption in uses but, there is also a newer more
secure standard WPA2, (which uses Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) and is unaffected), although support is still patchy. Consumer may find they are
forced to still rely on the now unsecure WPA encryption to connect their devices to the network.
For Business this is even bigger headache.
The TJ Maxx chain had hundreds of millions of customer details stolen due in part to the fact that they were still using the cracked WEP standard.
It’s easy to see a situation where hackers may try to do the same using WPA forcing corporate users to VPN or WPA2 dumping devices that
can’t support these protocols.

We haven't broken down the minutes and seconds or anything, but we're fairly certain that July 10th wasn't exactly ten years ago. Nevertheless, the
so-called "impenetrable" BD+ DRM scheme has reportedly already been subverted, and it's no shock to hear that the folks behind SlySoft had a hand in it. Regrettably,

Progress made on cracking Blu-ray's special DRM, BD+
SlySoft, the Antigua-based company behind AndDVD HD, has claimed that it knows how to defeat the additional BD+ encryption available on Blu-ray
devices, and that BD+ movies will be cracked by the end of the year. In a press release, the company appears to relish its outlaw status in Hollywood.
"I should really think about hiring a bodyguard now, since this product wont please everybody," said James Wong, the companys head
developer. Hes certainly right about that.
AACS, the "advanced" copy protection system deployed on both high-def disc formats,
proved itself to be something less than hacker proof when it was cracked in a couple of months. Back in April, hackers announced a set of
"non-revocable cracks" and then promptly cracked AACS again a day after it was "fixed." BD+ is a second layer of encryption that
can be slapped on top of AACS. It wasnt used with initial Blu-ray releases because, well, it wasnt actually done. The specs and licensing arrangements
werent worked out until June of this year, and it wasnt long after that BD+ went to work annoying legal users.
