It's Time to Face the Ugly Truth, SP3 or No SP3, the Clock Is Ticking for Windows XP
As 2008 has kicked in, it's now time to face the ugly truth. The clock is ticking for Windows XP. And while Microsoft may view this as a natural stage in the evolution of a product introduced all the way in 2001, a healthy proportion of end-users and businesses will fail to see eye to eye with the company on this one.

5.1.2007Just over 30 days until Office 2003 SP3 available via Microsoft Update automatic distribution
The MU and Office Team: Just wanted to give you a heads up on our promised 30 days notice before making Office 2003 SP3 available via Microsoft Update
automatic distribution (for Vista and XP). We released SP3 for Office 2003 to customers about 4 months ago. Since then weve heard some great
feedback on what it is doing for customers be it in the enterprise, consumer, or other segments. In some cases people probably dont even know that
its working for them, which is just perfect. The security improvements are working just like they should in that case :).
That
said, we wanted to use the MU blog as one of many avenues to alert our customers to the fact that we will be distributing SP3 automatically via
Microsoft Update approximately 30 days from January 27th. We say approximately because the availability will happen gradually and not everyone will
see it at the same time. Think of the 27th as the marker and no sooner than 30 days from then is when SP3 will start to become available to
customers' systems.

28.11.2007Office 2003 SP3 Automatic Distribution Begins Today
Microsoft Update Team: Office 2003 SP3 has been available interactively on MU for many months now, but, as you may remember from
our post last month, today marks the beginning of automatic distribution to MU users.
We've heard great feedback from customers who've already installed SP3, and feel confident in distributing it to the many users who rely on
MU to keep their PCs secure, reliable, and up-to-date. Note: The automatic distribution process will be gradual, so some users may see it install
today, and for others, it may take a little longer.

28.02.2008Office 2003 SP3 on Microsoft Update in 1 Month
Office 2003 SP3, released to customers on September 18, 2007, will become ready for automatic distribution via Microsoft Update (for Vista and XP)
starting February 27, 2008. This means that the availability will happen gradually and not everyone will see it at the same time. The delay is there
to give the market plenty of time to evaluate the service pack and allow the Office team to address concerns. The service pack includes improved
security and enhanced compatibility with Windows Vista, Office 2007, Internet Explorer 7 and Windows SharePoint Services. According to the MU team,
the customer feedback for SP3 has been generally positive.

07.01.2008Updates to Office 2003 include changes made in Office 2003 Service Pack 3
Nick MacKechnie: As you may know,
Office 2003
Service Pack 3 contains
some changes to the behaviour of Office. For
example, certain file types cannot be opened or saved by default, although you can re-enable this functionality by setting registry keys as described
in
this Microsoft Knowledge Base article and on
David LeBlancs Blog. A common
question is whether these behaviour changes are included in post-SP3 security updates. In short, yes: post-SP3 security updates contain behaviour
changes first released in SP3. This post will briefly describe why that occurs and will outline which updates contain which changes.

15.04.2008Office 2003 SP3: Are new formats more secure?
Blocking old file formats in the Office 2003 Service Pack 3 (SP3) release was meant to bolster security for Microsoft customers, but whether the new
formats are any more secure than older ones is debatable.
Few within IT feel compelled to side with Microsoft when debates over
file formats, backward compatibility and security emerge, yet the Redmond software giant's decision to block a swathe of old formats such as pre-97
PowerPoint, Excel, Word and Corel Draw formats has been met with sympathy from analysts.
Microsoft said it was attempting to
address security concerns by blocking the older file formats. "By default, these file types are blocked because the parsing code that Office 2003
uses to open and save the file types is less secure. Therefore, opening and saving these file types may pose a risk to you," it said in its advisory.

26.03.2008Microsoft apologizes to Corel, users for Office 2003 SP3 muck-up
Microsoft Corp. apologized to a software rival yesterday for saying its file format posed a security risk and issued new tools to let users of Office
2003 SP3 unblock a host of barred file types.
In a posting to his own blog, David LeBlanc, a senior software development engineer
with the Microsoft Office team,
admitted the company's mistake in blaming insecure file formats, including the one used by CorelDraw.
"We
stated that it was the file formats that were insecure, but this is actually not correct," LeBlanc said, referring to a description in a now-changed
support document. "A file format isn't insecure -- it's the code that reads the format that's more or less secure. The parsers we use for these
older formats aren't as robust as the code we've written more recently, which is part of our decision to disable them by default.

09.01.2008Microsoft Office 2003 SP3 Available Today
A third service pack for Office 2003, promising improved security and enhanced compatibility with Windows Vista, Office 2007, Internet Explorer 7 and
Windows SharePoint Services, will be available starting today (September 18), Microsoft officials say.
You can learn about and download
Office 2003 SP3 from Microsoft's
Office Update or
Microsoft Update pages, or just
navigate directly to the
free download. (These links aren't live as of this writing, and the Microsoft spokesman who e-mailed me late today didn't know exactly when they'd
go live, but 6 a.m. PDT was his best guess. But don't complain to me if they don't work then--just give it a few hours.)
The download
will be 120MB for the U.S. version and "no larger than 140MB" for other languages, the spokesman wrote. Office 2003 customers who use Microsoft's
AutoUpdate feature will be notified of SP3's availability "over the next few weeks," the spokesman wrote.
SP3 appears to address a
variety of generally minor annoyances and bugs across the suite. Some examples:
With the update installed, if an Office 2003 user packages
a PowerPoint presentation created in Office 2007, and the presentation is then re-opened in Office 2007, data from the original Office 2007 version
will now be available.

IE8 RC1. You can obtain IE8 RC1 from the links on this page. To see if you're one of the people who will have IE8 locked in, follow these steps.

27.01.2009Web Office Defined - How it's Evolved From 2005 to Present
This is
Web Office Week here at Read/WriteWeb, but some of
you may not be 100% sure what a Web Office is. Even the Wikipedia definition is a bit bare bones, so in this post I'm going to take a crack at
defining 'Web Office'. What I ended up with is this:
A Web Office suite is a combination of productivity, publishing and
collaboration features. A Web Office both embraces the functionality of desktop office suites (e.g. Microsoft Office) and extends it by using Web
Native features.
But let's start at the beginning.
Wikipedia currently states that a Web Office "is a set of applications hosted on a server that enable users to create, edit and
share information. It is a derivative of the Desktop Office Suite, but has more collaboration capabilities due to its Web nature."

29.08.2007Office 2010 optimized for Windows 7
Since a technical preview version of Office 2010 leaked barely a day ago it seems to have spread to anyone and everyone, despite a limited official
technical preview scheduled for July. We already knew that Office 2010 will ship in both 32-bit and 64-bit versions (and the technical preview was
leaked in both these flavours) and earlier this week it was confirmed that it will run on Windows XP SP3, Windows Vista and Windows 7 as well. Robert
McLaws is one of the many who has downloaded and installed the leaked build on Windows 7, and has discovered that parts of the Office suite have been
optimised for Windows 7 by utilising the new jump lists feature.

20.11.2007Microsoft: No new tools to unblock files in Office 2007
Microsoft Corp. will not post new tools that would allow users of Office 2007 to access blocked file formats, as it has done for customers running
Office 2003 Service Pack 3 (SP3). It cited a lack of interest in such tools and said existing work-arounds accomplish the same thing.
Last week, after some users complained that Office 2003 SP3 had changed the suite's security defaults so that applications would no longer open
numerous file formats -- including one used by Corel Corp.'s CorelDraw graphics software --
Microsoft apologized to Corel
and posted downloads that let users unblock formats without manually editing the Windows registry.
The company also said it was
sorry. "We recognize that we have not made any of this as usable as we'd like, and we apologize that this hasn't been as well documented or as easy
as you need it to be," David LeBlanc, a senior software development engineer with the Office team, said last Friday.
