Turn Off or Disable User Account Control (UAC) in Windows Vista

User Account Control (UAC) is a new security feature in Windows Vista that requires all users to log on and run in standard user privileges mode instead of as administrator with full administrative rights, thus prevent unauthorized or accidental changes that could destabilize the computers or allows virus and malware to exploit the system-level privileges provided to the local administrator to attack the network security, compromise computer safety and privacy, and damage files and settings in the network.

Forrester placed a lot of emphasis on different access control scenarios for the evaluation and the different vendors were evaluated around twelve different scenarios as well as strengths across technology, strategy and market presence.

Microsoft to Release Windows XP SP3 Later This Year

Microsoft is set to release not only Windows Server 2008, but also Windows XP Service Pack 3 later this year, according to a recent press release on Microsoft PressPass. It has been suspected in the past that Windows XP SP2 would end up as the final service pack released for the operating system, but apparently these suspicions can now be laid to rest.

This information came in conjunction with the announcement that Windows XP SP3 as well as Windows Vista will gain support for interoperability between Microsoft's Network Address Protection (NAP) and Juniper Network's Unified Access Control (UAC) standards for network access control (NAC) deployments.

The feature set for Windows XP Service Pack 3 is however still unannounced.

neowin.net - 24.05.2007

Microsoft, TCG, Juniper Tie the NAC Knot

A lot of vendors selling a lot of components that have to agree on how to measure a lot of things have to come together to make an effective Network Access Control system. You're talking vendors of hardware, security, network security, client security and operating systems deciding how to tell who's running a system trying to access the network, whether that system's healthy, whether it needs to be quarantined, how to give it the proper level of network access and how to fix it if it's not up to snuff.

Microsoft and the Trusted Computing Group on May 21 are making an announcement that will provide the fabric to mesh much of all that.

At Interop in Las Vegas, the two are letting it be known that the TCG's TNC (Trusted Network Connect) NAC architecture will adopt Microsoft's NAP (Network Access Protection) protocol, which is primarily a client/server NAC spec. Juniper Networks at the same time is announcing that it's working with Microsoft on interoperability between Juniper's UAC (Unified Access Control) NAC standard and Microsoft's NAP.

About a third of them say they would use the NAC support in the Microsoft client software rather than pay more and deal with deploying and maintaining a client with more features that they have to pay extra for. Microsoft calls its NAC technology Network Access Protection (NAP)

Deploying IPsec Server and Domain Isolation using Windows Server 2008 Group Policy

Network Access Protection is a new technology included with Windows Server 2008 that allows you to control what machines are allowed to connect to other machines on your network. Network Access Protection (or NAP) enables you to set system health policies that must be met before a machine is allowed network access. If the machines meet the requirements in the network access policies, then they are allowed on the network. If not, then the machine may be disallowed from connecting to any machine on the network, or you might configure policies that allow the machine to connect to remediation server that allow the machine to remediate and try to connect to the network again after remediation is successful.

Windows XP SP3 Update Breaks Home Server Remote Access

Windows Home Server users are reporting Remote Access problems after updating their home computers to Windows XP Service Pack 3.

Following the update, attempting to access those home computers via Windows Home Server’s Remote Access features brings up a dialog asking the user to add their homeserver.com domain to the Trusted Sites list in Internet Explorer. However, after doing so, users are still not able to access those PCs.

The issue arises due to security changes in XP SP3 - namely, that the Terminal Services ActiveX control in Internet Explorer is disabled by default.

Vulnerability in the ActiveX Control for the Snapshot Viewer for Microsoft Access

Microsoft is investigating active, targeted attacks leveraging a potential vulnerability in the ActiveX control for the Snapshot Viewer for Microsoft Access. An attacker could exploit the vulnerability by constructing a specially crafted Web page. When a user views the Web page, the vulnerability could allow remote code execution. An attacker who successfully exploited this vulnerability could gain the same user rights as the logged-on user.

The ActiveX control for the Snapshot Viewer for Microsoft Access enables you to view an Access report snapshot without having the standard or run-time versions of Microsoft Office Access. The vulnerability only affects the ActiveX control for the Snapshot Viewer for Microsoft Office Access 2000, Microsoft Office Access 2002, and Microsoft Office Access 2003.

The ActiveX control is shipped with all supported versions of Microsoft Office Access except for Microsoft Office Access 2007. The ActiveX control is also shipped with the standalone Snapshot Viewer.

Controlling Service Security Using Windows Server 2008

Nearly every server that you have in your environment is running some sort of service. These services provide access to data, resources, applications, and other important areas of the server and network functionality. If these services are not protected, they become ideal candidates for an attacker. When a service is attacked, access to the server and potentially the network is at stake.

The possibility of the service being sabotaged is also at stake, which could result in down time and loss of money due to the server performing the services functions. With Windows Server 2008 Microsoft has added some fantastic new control over services. When you combine all of the control that Microsoft provides for services in a Group Policy Object, you can ensure that your services are protected.

    BeyondTrust tames Vista's UAC pop-ups

Management vendor BeyondTrust Tuesday unveiled software that lets companies nearly eradicate the pop-ups that plague Windows Vista's user account control feature.

BeyondTrust released Privilege Manager 3.5 with a feature that plugs into Microsoft's Group Policy infrastructure and lets IT control administrative rights needed to access some applications.

Vista's UAC feature was touted as a way to avoid giving users administrative rights to their desktops. With those rights, users can install software and control the entire machine -- and so can malicious programs that secure administrative rights. UAC was designed to curb that problem, but users quickly found that the number of pop-up windows UAC generated was confusing at best.

"The things that were scaring us away from Vista were the hardware requirements and UAC," says Omar Ghneim, network administrator for EXCO Resources, an energy company based in Dallas. "We tried Vista on a few administrators' machines, but they couldn't handle the pop-ups and we went back to XP the next day." ..

Windows XP SP3 Final Released to PC Manufacturers (Updated)

WB: In regards to the availability of XP SP3 for MSDN/TechNet subscribers and the availability of the XP Embedded/WinFLP editions, Chris Keroack, release manager of XP SP3, mentioned the following:
    • "MSDN/Technet - Not yet. This will be available within the next month."
    • "XP Embedded and Windows Fundamentals will be available at a later date."

We personally find it a bit odd that paying subscribers will not have access to the build until after the public download on April 29.

Microsoft confirmed today that the final version of Windows XP Service Pack 3 has been released to PC manufacturers right on schedule. The update will be available to end users to download next Monday, April 29, and pushed to Windows Update in June.

Microsoft gave us an early look at the update as a 580MB disk image. What we saw is barely changed from our preview of an early beta of SP3, and seeing Windows XP SP3 for the first time is highly unremarkable.

Far from being a new operating system, Windows XP SP3 is really an accumulation of updates for compatibility, security, and performance. It doesn't contain new features found in Vista, aside from Network Access Protection (NAP), which lets XP systems work with Windows Server 2008's ability to enforce system health requirements before allowing access to network assets.

Modifying the All Users profile in Vista or Windows Server 2008

Peter Fitzsimon: Ok, so I just spend a few whistful hours trying to work out how to modify the "All Users" profile on a Windows Server 2008 system. I wanted to add a program to run at login (e.g. in the Start Menu|Programs|Startup directory) for all users that login, but things are now a bit different with Vista and Windows Server 2008.

I have found quite a few people asking similar questions on the Internet but no one seems to have offered a solution that works so I thought I'd post my findings.

Firstly, for those who haven't hit this before, the "C:Documents and Settings" directory where user profiles are stored in Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 systems has changed to "C:Users" in Vista and Windows Server 2008. (I regularly encounter XP users who have upgraded to Vista getting confused by this one)
