Windows Performance Blog

As I said in yesterday’s introduction, my job as an engineer on the Windows Vista team is to improve performance. I wanted to look at a study that measure a key area that we focused on for Windows Vista – consistent responsiveness during the times that matter most to users (when starting up their machine, after being idle, and when you are under the gun running tons of apps, etc.).

Mac OS X 10.6 Brings Serious Performance Gains

While our focus at Phoronix is on testing hardware under Linux, we remain friendly and interested in other BSD and UNIX operating systems too, including Mac OS X . With the launch of Mac OS X 10.6 "Snow Leopard" we have been particularly interested in it considering the technological advancements that have been made in this update thanks to their large focus on improving the performance of Mac OS X. With that said, we have spent all week working on a grand Mac OS X benchmarking showdown by comparing the performance of the retail build of Mac OS X 10.6.0 to the earlier Mac OS X 10.5.8 through a number of different quantitative tests. We firmly believe that as of right now these are the most detailed desktop performance numbers available concerning Snow Leopard, but we already have more figures on the way. We have performance numbers from not just one Mac computer, but two different setups. Here's to the first 60+ tests we ran!

Mac user: Don't underestimate the case

A case is a crucial part of a computer. Aside from the obvious fact that without a case, all you have is a pile of chips and cables, the case of a computer plays an important role in how you interact with it. Microsoft ads, and some of their users, may dismiss Macs as "more about looks" than anything else, but a Mac user looks at it differently. Fact is, it isn't always about performance; a bad case can make or (literally and figuratively) break a good computer, particularly on the mobile scene. Let's take a look at the "unibody" MacBook Pros, as an example.

How to check your Hotmail in Safari (3 or) 4

Like a lot of other issues with Hotmail and non-IE browsers, you just need to change the User Agent string to fool Hotmail into thinking it is dealing with a browser it knows about. In Safari, this is pretty easy to do. As far as we can tell, however, Safari doesnt remember the User Agent settings from session to session, so you would need to reset the User Agent for each new session that you want to check your Hotmail account.

ISPs to blame for new worm affecting MSN users

ISPs could kill a new worm that is spreading rapidly via MSN Messenger, according to security experts.

The worm, called Backdoor.IRCBot.gen, spreads by sending file transfer requests to a victim's contact list. Once accepted, a malicious file is executed on the recipients computer, which gives criminals control of the infected computer.

Experts say that in most cases, IM worms send files to all the user's contacts without their knowledge and the only way to verify the authenticity of the file is to check with the person who is supposed to have sent it.

James Turner, security consultant for Australian-based research firm IBRS, claims ISPs could stop the worm if they tried. ..

Amid gloom and doom, US tops list of world's most competitive economies

Outsourcing? Check.

Alarmingly low math and science prowess in education? Check.

Plenty of lobbyist abuse and special interests? Check.

Most competitive economy on Planet Earth? Uh, check.

According to new research from the World Economic Forum, the US heads the list of most competitive economies on the globe. It beats all comers in part through an "excellent university system" and research collaboration between business and academia, and the report calls it "arguably the country with the most productive and innovative potential in the world."

Stop me if you've heard this before, but you probably haven't. The last two years have seen an enormous amount of fretting over US economic strength and competitiveness, but the WEF's research indicates that things may be much better than perceived.

Nvidia aims at Intel with integrated Graphics Chip

Nvidia Corp is rolling out a graphics microchip that will be embedded in the main collection of components that make up a personal computer, as the company goes toe to toe with Intel Corp in the integrated graphics chip market.

Nvidia is expected to say on Tuesday that its new GeForce chips for desktop PCs give the performance of an entry-level separate graphics processor unit, as compared to traditional integrated graphics chips such as those made by Intel.

Given the proliferation of graphically rich computer programs, Nvidia, Intel, Advanced Micro Devices Inc and others aim to provide better graphics performance. Intel, the world's biggest chipmaker, has already upgraded its integrated graphics offering, the G35, aimed at mainstream PCs.

"As for going up against a strong competitor, that's nothing for Nvidia," said Jon Peddie, head of market research firm Jon Peddie Research, based in Tiburon, California. "They've got great technology and superior marketing skills."..

ReadyBoost no longer a Vista-only feature: eBoostr 1.0

MDO Ltd. announces the release of eBoostr, a complete replacement for Microsoft ReadyBoost technology for Windows XP. Upgrade the performance of your PC without upgrading its components. Get ReadyBoost-like technology in Windows XP. Overcome ReadyBoost limitations and use up to four inexpensive flash devices to speed up your system. Add more speed to your PC without upgrading! If you could improve the performance of your computer by upgrading just one item, that would be memory. Adding more RAM speeds up Windows and applications, allowing the system to access the hard disk less often. This is especially true for older PCs with 256 or 512 MB of RAM, and laptop computers with slow hard drives.

Upgrading computer components can be costly, and is not always possible. Buying and plugging a USB flash memory stick, on the other hand, is neither expensive nor complicated. That is why Microsoft developed a new technology called ReadyBoost. ReadyBoost uses flash memory plugged into a computer to enhance operating system responsiveness, decrease loading time, and improve computer performance. Unfortunately, Microsoft ReadyBoost is only available in Windows Vista. Since the day Microsoft announced its ReadyBoost technology for Windows Vista, the company made it clear that no ReadyBoost upgrade will be released to support Windows XP and older operating systems.

Blueprints drawn up for quantum computer RAM

In the fundamentally fuzzy world of quantum mechanics, it can be difficult to keep clear memories, and that could be a problem for future quantum computers.

Now three physicists in Italy and the US have proposed a method for retrieving quantum information from memory that should make total quantum recall more reliable.

Quantum computers have the potential to do some kinds of calculation with unprecedented speed, as small-scale demonstrations have confirmed. However, to perform most of these calculations effectively these machines will eventually need to access something resembling random access memory (RAM) “ a large store of quantum information that can be selectively accessed.

Ordinary RAM contains a large array of memory cells, each holding one bit of information “ a binary 0 or 1. To check the contents of particular cell, a computer accesses it using its address “ a string of bits that identifies the cell's location.
