Cray Computer Founder Joins Microsoft
Microsoft confirmed on Friday that Burton Smith, formerly the chief scientist for Cray, would be joining the company as a technical fellow. Smith will work to expand Microsoft's efforts in parallel and high-performance computing, and would report to chief technical officier Craig Mundie.
Smith had worked with Cray since its inception as Tera Computer Co. in 1988. He has also published several works on issues regarding parallel computing. "As microprocessor technology continues to evolve over the next decade or so, we're going to see the capabilities of a supercomputer cluster on the desktop which will require a different software architecture," Mundie said. "Burton will be investigating how to develop software to benefit from the opportunities which multi-core multiprocessors will present."

15.8.2007Building a Host Cluster with Hyper-V Beta 1
Robert Larson: Well by now you have heard the news that Microsoft shipped Hyper-V Beta 1 early!!
Like many of you I have been
testing away and thought I would share the steps for creating a host cluster in Windows 2008 and Hyper-V. For those that have built host clusters in
Virtual Server, you will find the process in Windows 2008 and Hyper-V much more streamlined and user friendly. One major improvement is the
integration of Hyper-V as a cluster aware application and native support for making a virtual machine highly available.
So what
are the 10 steps you have to go through to build a host cluster using iSCSI shared storage?

The cluster will consist of 416 of Fujitsu's HX600 high-performance computers. Each of those machines is based
on four quad-core Opteron processors so a total of 1,664 processors and 6,656 Opteron cores will be busy inside the machine, running applications such
as scientific calculations, genomic information processing, computer graphics, and large archive searches.

07.03.2008Sir Alan Sugar unveils East End supercomputer

Sugar

But the

far coughed up around £650,000

The e-Science HPC
cluster will run on Linux and
be powered by AMD's 284 dual
processor, dual core nodes
which might be seen by some as
a bold move away from
long-term Viglen partners
Microsoft and Intel.
El Reg asked why Viglen had
chosen AMD over Intel, and
Sugar said "it's simply a
commercial thing" and that he
was glad to see "healthy
competition" between the two,
unlike Microsoft's dominance
of the software market.
"Hardware becomes an
irrelevance as far as the
business model is
concerned...hacking it out on
price is long gone, now we
have to compete over who
offers the best service."

14.09.2006Samsung and Microsoft work to speed up SSDs
A few weeks ago SanDisk slated Windows Vista for not being optimized for SSD (Solid State Drive) storage hardware.
"As soon as you
get into Vista applications in notebook and desktop, you start running into very demanding applications because Vista is not optimized for flash
memory solid-state disk”. Said Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Eli Harari
SandDisk’s solution is to develop a new
controller technology which will overcome these limitations but could take upto a year to reach the market.
Now according to
PCworld Samsung has been in talks with Microsoft to increase the performance of SSDs using Vista
and other MS OSes.
The speed and way in which SSDs fetch and cache data are different than hard drives, said Michael Wang, flash marketing
manager at Sun.
Standard magnetic hard drives have a 512kb cluster size where as SSDs only have a 4kb cluster size. Samsung hopes to work
with Microsoft to boost SSD performance on Windows by discovering optimal packet sizes for data transfers and the best ways to read and write files,
for example.
SSDs have been hailed as the future storage medium for PC’s and internet connected devices, citing speed, power use and
durability.
