CompUSA to Close Shop

CompUSA, the computer and gadget retailer controlled by Mexican billionaire Carlos Slim, announced yesterday that it had been sold to the Gordon Brothers Group, a restructuring and investment firm, for liquidation. The firm will close down CompUSA's remaining 103 stores after the holidays and sell some company assets, though the exact terms of the deal were not not disclosed. Active discussions are still underway to sell its technical services business, CompUSA TechPro, its online sales operation, CompUSA.com, and select stores in key markets.

CompUSA to Close Stores After Holidays

Consumer electronics retailer CompUSA said Friday it will close its store operations after the holidays following sale of the company to Gordon Brothers Group LLC, a restructuring firm. Financial terms weren't disclosed.

CompUSA operates 103 stores, which plan to run store-closing sales during the holidays.

Privately held CompUSA, controlled by Mexican financier Carlos Slim Helu's Grupo Carso SA, said discussions were under way to sell certain stores in key markets. Stores that can't be sold will be closed.

Gordon Brothers will also try to sell the company's technical services business, CompUSA TechPro, and online business, CompUSA.com. It would be up to the buyers whether to continue the CompUSA name.

Back from the dead: CompUSA assets snapped up by TigerDirect

CompUSA will live on, thanks to a deal with electronics marketer Systemax. Systemax, which owns popular computer parts reseller (and CompUSA competitor) TigerDirect, announced yesterday that it has entered into an agreement to purchase the CompUSA brand, trademarks, and e-commerce business. It also plans to acquire select assets and retail stores from the company, and says that it expects to close various parts of the deal throughout the first quarter of the year. "We believe the value of the CompUSA brand remains very high. The company has a long legacy of value pricing, service and customer loyalty among consumers nationwide," said Systemax CEO Richard Leeds in a statement. "We view this acquisition as a strong complementary business to our TigerDirect operation."

CircuitCity.com is back, copy of CompUSA & Tiger Direct site

CircuitCity lives again, or at least the name does. As of May 23 the site has gone live again offering the types of products that you would expect from the defunct mega-retailer. While the main page feels familiar the rest of the site has changed to a well-known feeling that most will be able to easily navigate. Systemax was the company who bought up the Circuit City assets including the domain name and other online related property. Not so coincidentally the same company who also bought up CompUSA's domain assets also own and run Tigerdirect.com. Knowing this fact it becomes quite apparent that CircuitCity.com is a direct copy of CompUSA and TigerDirect.

CompUSA makes light of Circuit city closure

Systemax Inc, the company which owns TigerDirect, purchased nearly defunct computer retailer CompUSA's remaining assets at the beginning of the month. The acquisition swept up the remaining CompUSA stores (around 16 of the formerly 104) and the ever-important brand name into Systemax's portfolio.

However ironically, CompUSA this morning issued a press release offering shopping tips "in light of recent big box electronics store closings," which cautioned consumers not to succumb to the pressure of buying from "disorganized sales" because of their closeout prices.

In addition to advising consumers to check products and boxes thoroughly, the retailer naturally suggests comparing prices at other stores both physical and virtual. Coincidentally, that happens to be the new strategy of CompUSA, calling it Retail 2.0, where customers are invited to comparison shop directly in store...

CompUSA to Sell Vista, Office 2007 Ahead of General Release

Retail chain CompUSA will sell Microsoft Windows Vista and Office 2007 Nov. 30 alongside resellers and OEM partners and ahead of the general public release, planned for late January, the software maker announced Nov. 13.

Windows Vista Business and Microsoft Office Small Business 2007 will be available at select CompuUSA stores as part of Microsoft Open Value or Microsoft Open Business licensing options-five copies or more at a 10 percent discount or more-part of an effort to make volume buying more obtainable for SMB (small and midsize business) and Home Office customers, more than 50 percent of whom turn to retail outlets for software, said Cynthia Bates, Microsoft's general manager of the small-business division for the U.S. Small and Mid-market Solutions & Partners Group.

Customers will walk out of CompUSA stores with a Microsoft Small Business Value Program Kit explaining the value of Microsoft's SMB portfolio and Small Business Specialist set of VARs offering integration and services as well as a proof of purchase. A CompUSA sales associate will then work with the customer to explain how the software can be downloaded with activation of the license.

CompUSA Guarantees Vista, Will Reinstall Old OS If Necessary

Do you want to have Vista installed but couldn't care less about the physical media? As reported earlier, you can download it from Microsoft or, you can pay a fraction of the retail price for CompUSA to install it for you (plus the price for Vista), along with a particularly thoughtful "satisfaction-guarantee".

CompUSA guarantees that customers who buy Vista or Office 2007 along with in-store installation will be satisfied with their Windows Vista update. If not, the retailer will refund the purchase price and reinstall the PC's original operating system. Customers who bring their PCs to a CompUSA store before 3:00 p.m. Jan. 29 will be able to buy just the installation of Vista or Office installation for $19.99 and retrieve the computer as early as 12:01 a.m. January 30. From Tuesday on, installation fees will revert to $49.99 (in-store) and $149.99 (in-home). CompUSA is also offering a trade-up deal where an old functional laptop can be converted to credit towards the purchase of a new Vista-equipped computer. The credit amount will be based on the notebook's condition, hardware specifications and age.

Vista prices fall even further

Ina Fried: I expected to see some lower Vista prices in this weekend's ads, but was surprised to see just how low the prices had fallen.

Officially the price cuts announced by Microsoft on Thursday don't take effect until later this year when Service Pack 1 hits retail shelves. However, the company had said that many retailers were offering promotions that bring the software to its lower price.

But the ad at OfficeMax took things a step further. In this week's circular, the office products chain is selling Windows Vista Home Premium for $99. That's $30 less than Microsoft's just-lowered price and the same as the suggested price for Windows Vista Home Basic--though perhaps just a hair more than the clearance prices a couple weeks back at closing CompUSA stores.

Seagate to make flash-based hard drives

Seagate Technology, the number one maker of magnetic hard drives, is going to make hard drives based around flash memory too, says CEO Bill Watkins.

"We are going to have a solid state drive, probably for enterprise first," he said during an interview on Wednesday. "We think we can make these drives better."

Seagate's decision is a significant turning point in the religious war in the storage market. The flash versus magnetic debate has been issue No. 1 in the storage world for the past two years. Magnetic hard drives have been a crucial component for servers, PCs and notebooks for years. Magnetic hard drives cost far less in terms of cost per gigabyte and typically hold more data than flash devices. At CompUSA, a 500GB desktop drive on sale sells for $109, or as much as two 4GB flash drives. The price disparity exists at wholesale too. ..

Windows Home Server Now Generally Available

Windows Home Server, a new solution to help families easily protect, connect and share their digital media and documents, is generally available today. The HP MediaSmart Server, powered by Windows Home Server software, is now available for pre-order on Amazon.com, Best Buy.com, Buy.com, Circuit City.com and CompUSA.com. It will be shipped to customers and available via other leading retailer Web sites later in November. Additional Microsoft hardware and software partners are also delivering new consumer products and solutions designed to work with Windows Home Server.

Digital devices and content are everywhere in our day-to-day lives and they are more important all the time, said Bill Gates, chairman of Microsoft. With the launch of Windows Home Server, Microsoft and its partners are creating a new consumer product category that will help people keep their digital media safe and make it easier for them to enjoy it with friends and family.

Windows Home Server is a stay-at-home server that delivers the benefits of powerful server technology used by many people at work within a simple, easy-to-use solution for the home. It automatically backs up Windows XP-based and Windows Vista-based home computers each night, provides a central place to organize digital documents and media, and includes a free Windows Live Internet address to access the home server from virtually anywhere and share content with friends and family. It also monitors the health and security status of home computers and can stream media to other devices in the home, such as Xbox 360, allowing people to enjoy digital music, photos and videos on their television.

Microsoft Makes a Price Cut

"We're in this for the long haul," Microsoft Business unit President Jeff Raikes said on Monday when Microsoft announced that they would be introducing a $100 USD discount and 1 year of support with the purchase of any of their Small Business Accounting 2006 software.

Microsoft Small Business Accounting software is similar to Intuit's well know QuickBooks program. In simple terms, it is a "Money Management Program", it allows small businesses to keep track of sales, purchases, and overall balances.

Microsoft decided to create the discount when they noticed how low their retail sales were. According to NPD, an organization that tracks retail sales, Intuit had 93.7% of November's sales, Microsoft on the other hand only had 1.3%, the other 3.7% went to Peachtree.

The discount will be available starting on April 30th to such major retailers as Best Buy, CompUSA, Office Depot and Staples. Dell is also planning on making the software available with their PC's.

PDF Faithful: Whither Vista?

Wonky OS puts the PDF community in a pickle, as few customers upgrade and others cling for dear life to ye olde XP/NT/2003.

One doesn't rely on CompUSA clerks to dispense wisdom regarding many dilemmas in life, but at the store in my town, Darren (his job security depends on me using a fake name) summarized my Vista experience perfectly.

"It's great, as long as you're willing to start over with all new hardware that's known to run on it," he said, while I slumped deeper into one of their comfy armchairs used to induce customers to buy HDTVs. "I think a lot of people are just keeping XPor buying new laptops without Vistaand hoping what comes after Vista will be better."

At that moment, I realized he was right. It took his evaluation of the situation to finally write off a months-long quest to get my Vista-wired laptop to talk to my cell phone, camera, voice recorder, and, for that matter, a couple of Napster To Go MP3 players.

Dell brings back XP on home systems

Amid significant customer demand, the computer maker said on Thursday that it has returned to offering the older Windows version as an option on some of its consumer PCs.

Like most computer makers, Dell switched nearly entirely to Vista-based systems following Microsoft's mainstream launch of the operating system in January. However, the company said its customers have been asking for XP as part of its IdeaStorm project, which asks customers to help the company come up with product ideas.

"We heard you loud and clear on bringing the Windows XP option back to our Dell consumer PC offerings," Dell said on its Ideas in Action page. Users get to vote on various suggestions, and the notion of bringing back XP got 10,000 "points," making it among the most popular requests but well below top picks such as adding Linux or OpenOffice.org to its PCs.

Windows XP systems became scarce, but not impossible to find, after Vista arrived. For example, Hewlett-Packard said it would continue selling XP on some machines aimed at small and midsize businesses, while CompUSA still stocks a couple of business-oriented XP systems in its retail stores. Lenovo has also continued shipping XP on many of its business systems.

Bill Gates not the worlds richest person anymore

According to Sentido Comun, Carlos Slim Helu has surpassed Bill gates as the worlds wealthiest person. The Mexican magazine estimates Slim to be worth about $67.8 billion, while Gates is estimated at "just" $59.2 billion.

Slim, who controls Teléfonos de Mexico (Telmex), has been climbing up the ladder over the past months and was recently ranked at #2 on Forbes list of the worlds richest people. Sentido Comun believes that the sharp price increase of Telmex stock - +27% between March and June of this year was the single most important reason that allowed 67-year old Slim to reach the top spot.

Besides Telmex, Slim's holdings include five insurance companies, a retail chain, mining companies, an auto parts manufacturing company, a bank and a tobacco company. He also has an investment history in the U.S. where he owns CompUSA and Saks Fifth Avenue.

Dell, CompUSA Gear Up For Vista Launch

With more than 100,000 hours invested in testing and validating Microsoft's Windows Vista, Dell specialists believe they are ready for the business launch of the new operating system on Thursday. "We're ready to work with individual consumers or large enterprises," said Russ Ray, a senior manager in Dell's client operating system product marketing unit as he described the hardware manufacturer's game plan for the launch of Vista. "The smaller they are, the easier it is. We're finding that everybody is interested in getting his hands on it."

Dell, which says it accounts for more than 10 percent of Microsoft's business, said customers with volume licensing agreements with Microsoft can use Dell to factory-install Vista after they have provided their Windows Vista image. In extensive pre-launch testing of Vista, Office 2007 and Exchange Server 2007 with its customers, Dell has found that the ideal PC hardware configuration should grow to take advantage of the advanced functions included in the Microsoft products.

A typical Vista-based configuration should have 2-GB of RAM, a 256-MB memory card, a 7200 RPM hard disk and a dual core processor from AMD or Intel, according to Dell. In particular, the processor requirements represent a new departure for Dell; for years the firm was in a monogamous relationship with Intel, which was the sole supplier of its processors. In recent months, however, Dell has added AMD as a processor supplier.
