Windows 7: Cheaper Than Vista (and Every Other Windows OS)

It turns out, even if you don't weigh in all the slightly confusing Windows 7 upgrade deals, Microsoft's latest OS is its least expensive to date, and a real bargain compared to Vista.

Looking at full (non-upgrade) pricing of consumer Windows editions really tells the story: When you compare sticker prices, you can see that most editions hovered around the $200 mark, with a rare spike found in the $260 Vista Home Premium. When you adjust for inflation, that fairly regular pricing becomes a downward cascade—except for that Vista price hike...

Microsoft has confirmed that upgrade editions of Windows 7 will be available in Europe when the new operating system launches on October 22. The company had previously said that only full version would be on offer. The initial limitation of a full, clean-install only edition was part of the plans for Windows 7 E, a version of Windows that did not come with Internet Explorer and would be the only version available in the EU. Because previous versions of Windows all contain Internet Explorer, Microsoft argued that there could not be upgraded to a version without the browser.

Compare Windows vs Linux

In years past, I've pointed out resources to clarify this (from my first blog pushing the Get the Facts campaign back in 2003, last year pointing out vulnerability reports), and obviously others on my team do the same (Beth talking TCO of Linux vs. Windows in 2006).

Now that it has been quite a while since it revealed Windows Vista's official editions, Microsoft is trying to find ways to avoid people from being lost because of the fact that all seven (nine if you take the european "N" editions into account) editions are on a single DVD, and to simplify the user upgrade process.

Hacker releases working GDI-bug attack code

Security researchers on Monday spotted malicious code that triggers a critical vulnerability in the Chinese version of Windows 2000, and warned users of other editions to expect attacks.

Symantec Corp. confirmed that the proof-of-concept code publicly posted to the milw0rm.com site earlier in the day successfully attacks Chinese editions of Windows 2000 Service Pack 4 (SP4) by exploiting one of the two critical bugs in Windows GDI, or graphics device interface, that Microsoft Corp. patched last week.

But while the attack code works on Chinese versions of Windows, it doesn't when pitched against other editions. Rather than allow hackers to execute additional code -- malware to hijack the PC, for instance -- the exploit simply crashes Explorer, the Windows file manager, on non-Chinese versions of the OS.
