18.12.2008Will CES die like COMDEX?
Robert Scoble, blogger, technical evangelist and FriendFeed-aholic has raised an excellent point in a blog posting on Tuesday. Times are harsh in the
economy and businesses can no longer afford to splash out on lavish trade shows and their associated expenses. This week Apple announced its last
MacWorld in 2009. The news was picked up by the worlds tech sites and is seen by many as a clear indication of change in the industry. Back in June
2004 it was announced that the annual trade show, COMDEX, was to be axed that year. COMDEX was a computer expo held in Las Vegas, each November from
1979 to 2003.

18.12.2008VARs Still Favor Specialized Events over CES
Home theaters and the newest audio technology may headline the Consumer Electronics Show, now a fixture in Las Vegas in early January every year, but
the event also attracts a handful of IT VARs and solution providers looking to meet with their vendor partners and learn about cutting edge
technology.
Just a few of the VARs and solution providers contacted by eWEEK's Channel Insider said that they do plan to attend
the event, taking place Jan. 7-10.
"I used to go to Comdex every year," said Marc Harrison, president of Silicon East, a VAR,
MSP and system builder serving the regional area between New York City and Philadelphia. "From my perspective, CES is the only show where I can go
and meet all my vendors."

05.01.2008Software Notebook: How does Gates shape up as a seer?
"The Seattle PI's Microsoft
Blogger Todd Bishop asks "How
does Gates shape up as a
seer?" None strike me as
particularly clairvoyant, but
the missed ones are winners:
"I believe OS/2 is destined
to be the most important
operating system, and possibly
program, of all time." and
"Two years from now, spam
will be solved." But in
fairness to Gates, for many
years Microsoft's tagline was
"a PC on every desktop and in
every home.""
Another example, Comdex,
1996: Speaking about
newspapers, Gates predicted
that the Web would ultimately
create a "substitution
effect," shifting readers
away from print and onto Web
sites. Of course, that has
proved to be true, with many
people now getting their news
online, not only from
newspapers but from many other
sources.
In fact,
Gates' comments back then
were downright mild compared
with his remarks about the
newspaper industry at a
conference two weeks ago.
