As we head into 2005’s home stretch, I thought I’d do a round-up of my top 10 pieces of Windows Freeware for 2005. Some of these aren’t new, but certainly what I’d consider essential. This despite the continued presence of remnants of the GPMC campaign, which touted its inclusion in Vista as a boon. "The Group Policy Management Console, or GPMC, was available as a download for Windows XP and Windows Server 2003," reads one TechNet page.

"A scriptable Microsoft Management Console, GPMC offered a single administrative tool for managing Group Policy. GPMC is now built right into Windows Vista. This means that whenever you're ready to create or edit , you'll have easy access to the best tool for the job."..

Hidden Vista tools

If Sven Hallauer ever has a moment to reflect in his Redmond office, he can feel quietly pleased with himself.

As the release manager for Vista, he had overall responsibility during the development period for the success of the ˜Most Secure Windows Ever project.

For Hallauer, however, the flexibility of the new operating system is just as important as the security features. In particular, Vista is equipped with far better admin tools than previous versions. Previously, administrators were forced to add tools from Resource Kits, but now Vista comes with a lot of tools already on board, as well explain later.

You can tell just by looking at the increased minimum hardware requirements that theres a lot more in the new version of Windows. It used to be possible to keep an installation of Windows 95 under 200MB, but Vista requires 40 times more hard disk space. Even in comparison to Windows XP, Vista needs five times more space.

PC Tools attacks Vista's security again

The row between PC Tools and Microsoft over Windows Vista security escalated today with PC Tools attacking the effectiveness of Vistas User Access Control (UAC) tool.

Earlier this week, Microsoft attacked results of a PC Tools' study which found Vista allowed 639 threats per thousand PCs compared with 586 for Windows 2000.

In a blog posting, director of Windows product management security at Microsoft, Austin Wilson, said Microsoft rejected the claims and vowed that Windows Vista was significantly less susceptible to malware than older operating systems.

However, in a statement released today, PC Tools said the company maintains its comments last week that Vista is not immune from online threats.

vLite v1.1.5 Beta

Windows Vista from Microsoft takes a lot of resources, we all know that. So here is the tool for easy removal of unwanted components and bootable ISO creation in order to make Vista run faster and to your liking. This tool doesn't use any kind of hacking, all files and registry entries are in their original form and protected as they would be if you install the full version only without the components you select for the removal.

It configures the installation directly, before the installation, meaning you'll have to remake the ISO and reinstall it. This method is much cleaner, not to mention easier and more logical than doing it after installation on every reinstall.

DivX support, classic Xbox games coming in Fall Dashboard Update

On December 4. Microsoft will unleash the 2007 Fall Dashboard Update on the throngs of waiting Xbox 360 users. While the company has previously announced many of the features of this new update, a new one has just slipped out: DivX and Xvid support.

In perhaps the biggest news for tech-minded gamers, codec support for video files will be widened, with Joystiq reporting that this will include MPEG-4 Part 2 video codec support. "What that basically means is that our users should find that most of their DivX and Xvid files will work because they're under that umbrella of the MPEG-4 Part 2 codec," Microsoft's Aaron Greenburg told the site. DivX and Xvid support has long been a requested feature from people who would like to use their Xbox 360 as a media hub, making this very welcome news.

Hackers Exploit Bhutto Assassination

Within hours of yesterday's assassination of former Pakistani Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto, malware makers exploited the breaking news to dupe users into downloading attack code, security researchers said Friday. Searches for news about Bhutto's killing and the ensuing chaos in Pakistan listed sites pimping a bogus video coder/decoder (codec), said analysts at McAfee Inc., Symantec Corp. and WebSense Inc. For instance, WebSense found such a site simply by using "benazir" to search on Google. Meanwhile, McAfee quickly located 10 sites hosted on Blogger.com, Google Inc.'s blog service, that were spreading the fake codec.

Vista Update Fingers Activation Cracks

Microsoft has announced an update available to consumers next week which will detect two cracks commonly used to activate pirated copies of the operating system. One of the cracks refered to as Grace Timer, extended Vista's activation grace period, upto 2099. The other called as OEM BIOS, modified system files and the PC's BIOS to mimic the product activation done by computer-makers at the factory. If the sniffer detects an activation hack, it will pop up a warning that includes a link to the removal tool. Although SP1 will block these two cracks, " it's important to note that this update does not disable the exploits it finds, " says Alex Kochis. " It simply alerts customers that exploits exist. " However, MS will release a separate crack-removal tool at the same time that it rolls out the detection update.
