Microsoft: Sorry we used GPLv2 code illegally

Microsoft tonight issued an update on the reports that the company used open source code in their Windows 7 USB/DVD tool, illegally. Neowin originally reported earlier this week that Microsoft had pulled the tool after complains by Rafael Rivera over some of the content of the Windows 7 USB/DVD download tool. Microsoft issued the following statement regarding the reports: After looking at the code in question, we are now able to confirm this was indeed the case, although it was not intentional on our part. While we had contracted with a third party to create the tool, we share responsibility as we did not catch it as part of our code review process.

Microsoft Pushes Secure, Quality Code

Microsoft is adding new code analysis features to its upcoming Visual Studio 2008 tools suite.

In Visual Studio 2005, the company integrated a couple of static analysis toolsFxCop and PREfast into the tools suite under the names Managed Code Analysis and C/C++ Code Analysis, said S. "Soma" Somasegar, corporate vice president of Microsoft's developer division, in a blog post Oct. 4.

Now for Visual Studio 2008, Microsoft's code analysis team is adding some new features, including Code Metrics, a new tool window "that allows you to not only get an overall view of the health of your application, but also gives you the ability to dig deep to find those unmaintainable and complex hotspots," Somasegar said.

Yavor Georgiev: We have been busy preparing a good set of developer resources to release with SL 2 Beta 1, and we are finally done (the fact that it's the night before MIX is a coincidence, really). A (Microsoft) Code Name a Day: Confucius

Mary Jo Foley is resuming her Microsoft Code Name a Day series that she started in December 2006. The goal: To provide the back story, each day in August, on one of Microsofts myriad code names. Some of these code names might be familiar to Microsoft watchers; others (hopefully) will be brand-new.

Microsoft code names offer some great clues about the Redmondians development priorities, not to mention a better understanding of which future Microsoft products fit together, from a strategy standpoint. And not every product group is moving to boring, numbered codenames (like Windows 7 and Office 14).

Without further ado, let the codename games begin.

Code Canvas is a research prototype focused on spatial orientation of code as the foundation of an integrated development environment. It is a spatial (2.5D) representation of source code, visual designers, and project-related artifacts that utilizes infinite panning and smooth semantic zoom for navigation. It is also extensible to allow analysis overlays and graph-based relationship visualizations.
