9.8.2007vLite 1.1.6 beta - SP Slipstream
nuhi: Service Pack Slipstream support. Consider that feature a true beta test.
vLite had a hidden Slipstream page since the
service pack betas so this was not so hard to adjust. You can see it by running older vLite with /sptest switch .
However
it stopped working on the final SP1 when MS locked it down.
So this version should work again. Try this latest one and let me know of any issues
with the Slipstream.
Of course it is always better to either capture or get a preintegrated DVD because MS said that integrating
is not recommended before SP2 is out.

02.07.2007New Project: vLite - Vista Lite
Windows Vista from Microsoft
takes a lot of resources, we
all know that. So here is the
tool for easy removal of the
unwanted components in order
to make Vista run faster and
to your liking. vLite can also
create the bootable ISO and
apply the tweaks directly.
This tool doesn't use
any kind of hacking, all files
and registry entries are
protected as they would be if
you install the full version
only without the components
you select for the removal.
It configures the
installation directly, before
the installation, meaning
you'll have to remake the ISO
and reinstall it. This method
is much cleaner, not to
mention easier and more
logical than doing it after
installation on every
reinstall.

19.11.2007Microsoft comes clean on Vista SP1 driver and vLite issues
As you may have been aware having certain drivers installed on Vista will prevent SP1 from installing. Microsoft had not exactly been forthcoming on
which drivers but has now made the list available to the public.
The company listed the affected drivers in a
support article. It consists of mostly audio and display drivers but there are
warnings for fingerprint readers as well.
Additionally, users are warned against using vLite to strip features out of a Vista
installation and install using it. Microsoft says that could also prevent the installation of Vista SP1. The previous support article lists
possible causes and solutions.

22.01.2008Free utility condenses Windows Vista from 13GB to 1.4GB
A Croatian college student has created a utility that installs a seriously stripped-down Windows Vista, saying the heft of Microsoft's biggest
desktop OS was just too big to believe. "Who can justify a 15GB operating system?" asked Dino Nuhagic, a fifth-year student from Split, a Croatian
city on the Adriatic. Not Nuhagic, or the uncounted users who have turned to his creation, vLite.
vLite, a free program that lets users
pick and choose which Vista components, hotfixes, drivers and even language packs are installed, then builds a disk image that can be burned to a DVD
for unattended installation of the operating system.
"Why did I do it? Well, it's performance and work environment," said Nuhagic
when asked why he came up with vLite. "Performance, that's easy to explain. The less things running, the more responsive the OS. But the
environment part is where it gets down to personal preference."

27.03.2008Microsoft: Sorry we used GPLv2 code illegally
Microsoft tonight issued an update on the reports that the company used open source code in their Windows 7 USB/DVD tool, illegally. Neowin
originally reported earlier this week that Microsoft had pulled the tool after complains by Rafael Rivera over some of the content of the Windows 7
USB/DVD download tool. Microsoft issued the following statement regarding the reports: After looking at the code in question, we are now able to
confirm this was indeed the case, although it was not intentional on our part. While we had contracted with a third party to create the tool, we share
responsibility as we did not catch it as part of our code review process.

14.11.2009Vista Running on Eee PC
Asus Eee PC is, as expected, getting hacked every which way, and Brit
Paul O'Brien has managed to squeeze the bloated Windows Vista onto the little Linux laptop. Using
vLite, a tool to customize a Vista install before actually installing it, Paul shrunk
Vista Home Premium and put the custom disk image onto a USB stick.
He then booted the Eee from the thumb drive, installed and “ here's the clever bit “ shifted the
gigabyte-gobbling Side by Side (SxS) directory off the main drive and onto an 8GB SD card.

12.11.2007KDevelop4 shaping up
KDevelop4 is the Qt4 port of successful open source IDE (Integrated Development
Environment) KDevelop. Though it is more than just a port, in fact it is almost a complete rewrite as you will soon learn.
It is clear,
just by looking at our
neowin forums that people, to this
day, are still in search of a better IDE. Well lookout guys because this is an IDE you may want to keep track of. It has all the advanced features of
a modern development suite you have come to expect plus some new ideas. Most importantly, it now
runs on Windows too.
The
revamping of KDevelop had a late start but managed to pick up quickly with a
new user interface being designed at the start of last year. Improving on the dullness of the original KDevelop, this project
utilised the Qt4 toolkit to provide a easy to use and beautiful interface consistent with KDE4.
Thanks to David Nolden (
zwabel), the code completion of KDevelop4 has been
enhanced to the
point where it perhaps surpasses that of the better-known IDEs in terms of flexibility, ease of use and convenience. David realised that there seems
to be two types of developers. Those that prefer code completion to speed up their writing process and those that prefer code completion to be a form
of 'in-line documentation', providing details of the classes and libraries they are using and the options available to them. In this
modernised code completion, he believes all users are catered for.
KDevelop4 has been in development for roughly two years now with KDE4.2
fast approaching, yet the project still carries the 'alpha' moniker. Binaries for the latest KDevelop4 Alpha 3 were released for Opensuse
yesterday.

11.11.2008Microsoft Readies ‘Flood’ of Patches
Patch Tuesday for Microsoft is coming up and they’ve got a full plate to serve up. To fix bugs in Windows, Active Directory, IE, Office, and Host
Integration Server, a total of 11 patches will be released. Four of the eleven are tagged “critical, six marked “important, and one labeled “moderate.
Seven of the 11 updates will address vulnerabilities that Microsoft acknowledged can be used to execute remote code, a description that
generally means hackers could exploit those vulnerabilities to inject their own malicious code into vulnerable PCs, often by convincing users to open
a file attachment or tricking them into visiting a rogue Web site.

21.10.2005Microsoft to open source .NET Micro Framework
Microsoft announced today at PDC09 here in Los Angeles that they will be opening the .NET Micro Framework source code and also release the next
version, 4.0. The release will be available under the Apache 2.0 license, something that is already being used inside the community. Developers will
be able to gain access to the Base Class Libraries that were implemented into the .NET Micro Framework and CLR code. Both the TCP/IP and
Cryptography libraries are not included in the source. Colin Miller told the developers that the reason behind Microsoft not releasing the available
source code was because they use a third-party from EBSNet and do not have distribution rights.
