09.01.2008XP SP3 Goes on Automatic Updates This Thursday
Although a Microsoft manager had mentioned that XP SP3 would arrive "shortly" to Automatic Updates on Monday, the timetable became specific as the
company quietly said today it would release the upgrade on Thursday at 10 a.m. PDT. Microsoft will add Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3) to Windows
Update at that time, and trigger its automatic download and installation for users who have left the operating system's update service at its
default "Automatic (recommended)" setting.
" Updated applicability rules and updated metadata to target the update to Automatic
Update channel, " read a Microsoft support document revised Tuesday after the company unveiled its monthly security patches . " The Automatic
Update change will be published at 10:00 A.M. on July 10. " Microsoft delayed the distribution of Windows XP SP3 twice this spring, but the July
10 date seems firm; it was included in the cumulative list of all updates available via Windows Server Update Services (WSUS), the server-side update
tool many businesses use, as well as via the client-side Windows Update (WU) and Microsoft Update Web-based services. A Microsoft spokeswoman,
however, was not able to immediately confirm that July 10 will, in fact, be XP SP3's automatic update debut.

09.07.2008The Windows Update Stealth Affair Explained
It was widely reported last week that Microsoft had automatically updated systems that had Automatic Updates set to "Check for updates but let me
choose whether to download and install them". Nate Clinton, a Windows Update Program Manager at Microsoft posted a response on his blog shortly after
the widespread
reporting had gone out.
One question we have been asked is why do we update the client code for Windows
Update automatically if the customer did not opt into automatically installing updates without further notice? The answer is simple: any user who
chooses to use Windows Update either expected updates to be installed or to at least be notified that updates were available. Had we failed to update
the service automatically, users would not have been able to successfully check for updates and, in turn, users would not have had updates installed
automatically or received expected notifications. That result would not only fail to meet customer expectations but even worse, that result would lead
users to believe that they were secure even though there was no installation and/or notification of upgrades.
One misconception is that
people wrongly assumed that Microsoft had updated systems when the option for Automatic Updates was turned off, in this instance the machines were not
updated, only those that had the Automatic Updates tool turned on. The only stealthy thing about the whole affair is that the Windows Update service
was updated without consent of the user, Nate explains above why this is so. It updated a tool to check for updates which seemed to be the problem all
round.
Not such a big deal if you ask me. Oh Nate also goes on to say that Windows Update, or Automatic Updates have upgraded themselves in
the past in the same manner, only now it seems has it become an issue!

Windows Live OneCare changes Automatic Updates
Amid reports that Windows Live OneCare changes settings in Windows Update to allow for automatic installation of important updates, the official word
from Microsoft is that this is by design. When first installing OneCare, the setup informs the user that proceeding will change computer settings to
automatically download and install important updates from Microsoft Update. Settings for recommended and optional updates are not changed. Even during
Tune-up, OneCare checks, and then prompts the user if there are missing software updates or if Automatic Updates settings have been changed.
“ OneCare is built for people who dont want to worry about protecting and maintaining their PC. This behavior is by design and is not unique
to the latest version of OneCare. It helps ensure that your computer continues to receive important updates as soon as possible after they are
released. We are evaluating user feedback and will be revisiting how we communicate the installation details of Windows Live OneCare as we are
continually working to improve that experience. In addition, OneCare was built with privacy in mind, and Microsoft takes that very seriously –
every new feature or setting change is reviewed and approved by Microsoft’s privacy experts .”

IE8 via Automatic Update for users running IE6 or IE7
Microsoft plans to distribute Internet Explorer 8 to computers running previous versions of IE (IE 6 or IE 7) via Automatic Updates starting from the
3rd week of April. The update will be rolled out gradually from a small user base to large number of users. The update will be a 'high
priority' update for systems running Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 and is an 'important' update for Windows Vista and Windows Server
2008. The final version of IE8 was distributed via automatic update recently to users still running pre-release versions of IE8, Beta 2/RC1.
Organizations can use the IE8 Blocker Toolkit to block automatic delivery of IE8.

An explanation of Windows Update automatic updating
The Microsoft Update team has posted a statement addressing the current community
discussion on Windows Update's self-updating behavior. The upshot is that a longstanding procedure in Windows Update requires it to self-update
before it is able to recognize that new updates are available (note: WU does not conduct a self-update event each and every time it checks for
updates). This self-updating is done regardless of whether the user has enabled automatic checking, download and/or installation of updates. It does
so in an effort to avoid WU misleading the user to think s/he is up-to-date simply because s/he was not receiving notification that updates are
available. Put another way, WU cannot alert the user that there are security updates available if it is not in the necessary updated state that will
allow it to recognize those updates (see "chicken and egg"
dilemma).
However, we do recognize that we should have been clearer in our explanation of this process earlier in the game; the
MU team's blog post is an effort to rectify that oversight.
In short, this is a poorly understood process, so I invite you to
take a look at the details in the MU blog post to learn more.
Questions on this behavior are best addressed directly to the team
via the MU blog.

Microsoft: We didn't change Automatic Updates
Microsoft Corp. today denied that its software had arbitrarily changed Windows Vista's update settings, and instead said users were responsible for
the modifications that generated claims of unauthorized patch installs.
Reacting to reports that first surfaced last Friday, a
program manager for Windows Update said today that an investigation had turned up no evidence the Oct. 9 security fixes had switched settings in
Vista's Automatic Updates.
"From the customer logs that we received, we found that none of the updates released as part of the
October security release have made any changes to users' AU settings," said Nate Clinton in a post to a company
blog. "In fact, in the logs we reviewed, AU in all cases was set to 'install updates automatically' prior to the October security release."

Microsoft Offers Manual Fix to 'Stealth' Windows Update Bug
It turned out to be an insignificant problem after all, rather than something on the order of a rootkit: the discovery that Microsoft's Windows
Update feature updates itself even when users turn off "automatic updates" - a fact that Microsoft had actually documented quite well, but
which few had apparently read. But now, a claim that the self-updating update subsequently unregistered Microsoft's Windows Update drivers in
XP-based systems forced its own drivers to become unregistered...

CNET Reviews Windows Vista SP1
A little more than one year after its release, Windows Vista will receive its first service pack update in March. Microsoft says the pack will offer
better compatibility with third-party hardware, increased reliability, tighter security, and better performance. But unlike the last Windows Service
Pack release, Windows XP SP2--which offered users a new Windows Firewall, an improved Automatic Updates feature, and a pop-up ad blocker for Internet
Explorer--Windows Vista SP1 is largely a code update, devoid of new eye candy, and very light on "must-have" features for home users. Most of the
features touted by Microsoft are for the Business, Enterprise, or Ultimate editions of the operating system. Our advice: Be patient, and don't
download it once it becomes available. Wait until Windows Vista SP1 is offered to your PC via Microsoft's Automatic Updates service.

Microsoft's OneCare silently changes Automatic Updates
Microsoft Corp.'s consumer security software changes the Automatic Updates (AU) settings in Windows XP and Vista without telling users or getting
their approval, a researcher said today -- behavior that may explain recent reports of patches being installed and systems rebooting without
permission.
When Microsoft responded to new charges of silent changes last week, however, it denied that AU settings were ever
altered without user approval, and it didn't mention OneCare as a possible culprit.
Scott Dunn, an editor at the "Windows
Secrets" newsletter, reported this
morning that OneCare silently changes AU settings as it installs. No matter what AU setting the user selected previously, OneCare's installer
quietly changes it to the fully automatic option.

Microsoft planning updated UI for Windows Update
Beginning next month Microsoft will start an upgrade to the Windows Update and Microsoft Update services. Microsoft plans to start the
infrastructure update in late August, claiming "it will take a couple of months to complete the rollout." The update is required to "maintain and
improve service quality, reliability, and operations." The update will simply improve the user interface for Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008
computers running Windows Update, adding a more visible and detailed description of updates as well as improvements in how users are notified about
service packs. If you currently apply your updates automatically then this update will not modify the look and feel of Automatic Updates.

Office 2007 SP1 Update Availability Clarification
Bobbie Harder: Posting this as I've noted just a little bit of confusion with how Office 2007 SP1 is made available for download after it's release
yesterday. As you know, Office 2007 SP1 was released yesterday to Microsoft Update, and to WSUS as part of the Tues, Dec 11th release.
As planned, Office 2007 SP1 was not pushed via Automatic Updates. There has been some confusion where Windows Vista customers are seeing
Office 2007 SP1 listed as available with an option to install in their Windows Update control panel applet. The new Vista experience of the Windows
Update applet combines the convenience of the Microsoft Update site, by isting all applicable available updates, and the best of the Automatic
Updates behavior. This allows users to specify what update types they want to automatically download and install (and when), as well as combines the
interactive experience of the Microsoft Update site.

OneCare and Defender to
integrate further?
The Windows Live OneCare team
used its blog yesterday to
announce they are currently
working on one of their most
requested feedback:
integration with Windows
Defender, Microsoft's
antispyware utility, still in
beta 2 version.
The first thing they did in
that way is to modify the
OneCare setup so that it also
installs Windows Defender in
the background.
"For those interested
in the technical details, now,
when you install OneCare, as
long as you accept the default
prompts, the Windows Defender
install itself goes on behind
the scenes, and the Windows
Genuine Advantage check goes
on behind the scenes. During
the Windows Live OneCare
install process, the default
setting is to automatically
install Windows Defender with
automatic updates turned on.
However you will be given the
option to turn off automatic
updates of Defender signatures
or forego the Windows Defender
installation altogether if you
wish. "
The team also said
it will be easy to remove
Defender if wished, though the
didn't say if it'll be
through the usual Add/Remove
Programs or another way (a
button through the OneCare
front-end, for example).
