Windows Server 2008 KMS Setup Demonstration

This video demonstrates how to implement the Key Management Service (KMS) in your organization. KMS is a local activation service, and is the recommended method of activating volume license editions of Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 in organizations where most computers are consistently connected to the network. This demo shows how to set up the KMS host on a Windows Server 2008 computer, how to activate KMS clients with the KMS host, and how to review activation status using the slmgr.vbs command.

KMS 1.1 for Server 2003 is Release to Web

Michael Greene: The new version of KMS for Server 2003 is now available for download.  As stated on the site, KMS version 1.1 for Windows Server 2003 provides:

X86 (EN-US) - http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=82964

X64 (EN-US) - http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=83041

KMS on Server 2003 and 2008 should each behave the same way.  In fact, if you want to use both Server 2003 and Server 2008 to host KMS, the clients can move between the hosts transparently to the end user.  The "rules" for number of activations to start activating servers (5) and clients (25) are the same across both platforms, and you should use the same key to activate KMS regardless of whether it is running on 2003 or 2008.

Illegal KMS server appears on the Internet

The business launch of Windows Vista is only a few days behind us and already the attempts to pirate Windows Vista are underway. Recently I stumbled on news of a rogue KMS servers that has appeared on the internet with information on how to activate a copy of Windows Vista VL against the server. Once activated your illegal copy of Windows Vista will be good for 180 days before it needs to talk to the KMS server again.

KMS, which stands for Key Management Service, is part of the Volume Activation 2.0 scheme to protect Windows Vista and Longhorn Server from piracy. As part of your license agreement with Microsoft you agree to not bring up a KMS server on the public internet. This server is a clear violation of that agreement, which I doubt they had.

Troubleshooting KMS Activation - Part 1, the client

Windows activation is simple and straightforward if you understand the components. I have had a few customers that stumbled when getting a KMS online and in every case it has been an issue with name resolution, network connectivity, or they simply did not understand how to use the keys.

Activation is designed to help you with deployments and sustain your environment even in the event a key gets lost. KMS is the simplest of all the activation methods because you only need to worry about putting a key in one machine. You can then deploy new machines without having to ever worry about keys unless your device will be off the network for more than 6 months.

This is the first of a two part series to break down KMS troubleshooting in to a process that should help identify exactly what is at fault. I don't want to mislead or instill fear to those who are just starting out - the process is normally simple by design. However, for those who have run in to trouble, I'd like to publish a guide that will help you isolate and correct the issue you've encountered without spinning your wheels. Part 2 will be published next week with a focus on troubleshooting the server.

Run KMS on Server 2008, and which keys to use when activating Server 2008

Michael Greene: The documentation for volume activation 2.0 has been updated today for Server 2008.  You can find it here:

http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=75674

Running KMS on Server 2008 is functionally very similar to running it on Vista RTM.  You leverage slmgr.vbs to bring the service online and then clients find the server based on the DNS srv record.  BTW, Server 2008 KMS can be run within a virtual environment.

If you want to know which volume license keys to use when activating new machines running Server 2008, see page 19 in the Planning Guide and the FAQ.  You only need to put one key in your KMS, and it will handle requests from both Vista and Server 2008.  There are separate keys, and unique keys based on which version of server you need to activate.  Before you get excited - this is much easier to understand than it might first seem.  Simply decide the "top" version of Server 2008 you might install and then use that MKS key to activate the service on a 2008 server.  All versions in groups below that version will also activate off that key.  The groups are simple...

How to check your Hotmail in Safari (3 or) 4

Like a lot of other issues with Hotmail and non-IE browsers, you just need to change the User Agent string to fool Hotmail into thinking it is dealing with a browser it knows about. In Safari, this is pretty easy to do. As far as we can tell, however, Safari doesnt remember the User Agent settings from session to session, so you would need to reset the User Agent for each new session that you want to check your Hotmail account.

Amid gloom and doom, US tops list of world's most competitive economies

Outsourcing? Check.

Alarmingly low math and science prowess in education? Check.

Plenty of lobbyist abuse and special interests? Check.

Really weak telecom infrastructure? Check.

Most competitive economy on Planet Earth? Uh, check.

According to new research from the World Economic Forum, the US heads the list of most competitive economies on the globe. It beats all comers in part through an "excellent university system" and research collaboration between business and academia, and the report calls it "arguably the country with the most productive and innovative potential in the world."

Stop me if you've heard this before, but you probably haven't. The last two years have seen an enormous amount of fretting over US economic strength and competitiveness, but the WEF's research indicates that things may be much better than perceived.

Deployed: Windows Vista SP1 RC on ALL of my PCs

Brandon LeBlanc: Today Nick announced the availability of the release candidate for Windows Vista SP1. I had a chance to get the RC build of Windows Vista SP1 installed a few days ago. I decided to roll the RC out on all of my PCs which showcase a variety of device types and scenarios:

In installing the RC on my PCs, I did a combination of using the standalone installer and Windows Update. Before proceeding to install the SP1 RC bits, I first needed to uninstall the SP1 beta bits first. Users looking to install the Windows Vista SP1 RC will need to uninstall any previous version of SP1 prior to the installation of the RC from either Windows Update or the standalone installer.

ZoneAlarm Security Suite 7.1 Adds Vista Support

Check Point Software today released ZoneAlarm Internet Security Suite 7.1, a Vista-compatible version of its flagship security suite. Vista-compatible versions of ZoneAlarm Antivirus and the popular free ZoneAlarm Firewall are also available.

Past versions of ZoneAlarm's products have relied on Microsoft's TDI (Transport Device Interface) to track network behavior. Windows Vista retains support for TDI, but introduces the new Windows Filtering Platform (WFP). While porting to Vista using TDI would have been easier, Check Point chose to support WFP for this Vista-compatible version. When installed on Windows 2000 and XP, however, version 7.1 will still use TDI.

Check Point is the first major security vendor to make use of the Vista-specific Windows Filtering Platform. Company representatives explained that Microsoft will stop fixing problems with TDI in the future, so by utilizing WFP, users can be prepared for Vista threats...

Microsoft tries to stop Vista piracy

The software maker said this thursday that the update is aimed at thwarting a technique that was letting some people use pirated versions of the operating system without going through the software's built-in product activation. Microsoft has dubbed the approach "frankenbuild" because it works by combining test versions of Vista with the final code to create a hybrid version.

"Windows Vista will use the new Windows Update client to require only the 'frankenbuild' systems to go through a genuine validation check," Microsoft said on its Windows Genuine Advantage program blog. "These systems will fail that check because we have blocked the (product) keys for systems not authorized to use them."

Although Vista was only released to businesses last month--and won't hit retail shelves until late January--it has been making the rounds on the Internet, and there have been several reported hacks to bypass its built-in security mechanisms.

XP SP3 range check hiding an overflow condition?

We have received a few inquiries about the full disclosure posting http://seclists.org/fulldisclosure/2007/Dec/0470.html, where a range check was added in Windows XP SP3 for the Terminal Server RPC function RpcWinStationEnumerateProcesses. The speculation stated that this change was to hide an overflow condition, potentially leading to an exploitable vulnerability in previous Windows versions. In reality, this update to the Terminal Service RPC interface definition was made to better adhere to our own RPC best practices.

Then, click anywhere in Gmail off of the menu to close it. The feature is only available in the latest version of Gmail, which only works for English IE7 and Firefox 2.
