Application Specific Glass Colorization in Windows 7?

Microsoft might be introducing application specific glass renderings. The color of the glass frame around a window can be changed in Vista, but the change is global to the system. The color of any particular window glass frame can not be set by choice. But, how about being able to change the color/opacity level of a the glass frame of any application through defined events or commands? According to a Patent number 7418668:

A method for changing a color value and/or level of opacity value of a glass appearance window frame for an application window is described. The method includes steps of determining a defined color value and a defined level of opacity value to apply to a glass appearance window frame and displaying the glass appearance window frame in accordance with the defined color value and the defined level of opacity value. A command may be received to apply the defined color value and the defined level of opacity value to the glass appearance window frame, thereby applying the defined color value and level of opacity value to the glass appearance window frame. Color values and/or level of opacity values may be changed automatically, be application specific, and/or be changed in response to receipt of an input from a user to change one or more portions of a default configuration.

Microsoft to avoid transparency with Windows 7

Glyn Moody hits the nail on the head with his critique of Microsoft's proposed approach to Windows 7: Say little so that the market expects little.

It's not an unreasonable approach, and Microsoft did get burned for actually warning the market about what it would be providing, only to have to endure the consequences of not living up to the expectations it set, but I'm not sure it can afford to go back. Stating that it will be "more careful" with Windows 7, Microsoft's representative noted:

"We know that when we talk about our plans for the next release of Windows, people take action," said. "As a result, we can significantly impact our partners and our customers if we broadly share information that later changes."

Well, yes. But that's the whole point behind transparency. As Glyn notes, it's not that easy to do in practice, but it's increasingly critical in the opening 21st Century.

New Windows Server, IIS Takes A Modular Approach

Microsoft is making the rounds to preview and promote its forthcoming Windows Server 2008 and Internet Information Server 7, the Web server that ships as a part of the operating system. A lot has changed in computing since the last major release of Microsoft's operating system.

Server software, however, is more change-resistant, since IT shops don't want their servers radically changing with each upgrade. That could result in vital, mission critical applications breaking. On some levels, Windows 2008 has not changed radically, but on a different level, it has, said one analyst.

"Servers just get incrementally better each time, and I do think that is the case with Windows Server 2008," said Directions on Microsoft analyst Mike Cherry. "That's the good thing about Server 2008. But I do think in general when you add the pieces together, a little change here, a little change there, Windows Server is pretty compelling as a product."

Windows chief talks '7'

Since taking over the Windows development reins from Jim Allchin, Steven Sinofsky has chosen to fall almost completely off the public radar.

It's not that he hasn't been busy getting Vista Service Pack 1 out the door and starting work on Windows 7. It's just that Sinofsky doesn't want to talk about products until they are well along in their development. Last year, Sinofsky penned a blog to his Windows unit co-workers, explaining his public silence and urging them to follow his lead.

"I know many folks think that this type of corporate 'clamp down' on disclosure is 'old school' and that in the age of corporate transparency we should be open all the time," Sinofsky wrote. "Corporations are not really transparent. Corporations are translucent. All organizations have things that are visible and things that are not."

Level 3 Network Falters

Level 3 Communications experienced what it called "widespread network instability" early Friday, causing problems for numerous ISPs and hosts that depend on Level 3 to serve traffic. According to posts on the NANOG mailing list, the issue may have centered on faulty maintenance in one of the Internet backbone's service centers.

The outage began at roughly 2AM ET, and lasted for several hours. Some reported problems with their connections up to seven hours after the initial failure. Level 3, which is one of the largest providers of Internet service in the country, offers dial-up and broadband at wholesale prices to its customers. Level 3 was most recently in the news for its spat with competitor Cogent over network traffic...

Windows 7: User Account Control (UAC) overview

In part one of our overview of Windows 7, we looked into Federated Search. In part two, we look into the much criticized feature of Windows Vista - The User Account Control One of the highly criticized features in Windows Vista is the User Account Control(UAC) which prompts up a dialog box seeking users' permission to continue or stop whenever a system-level change is made. The problem with Vista is that even the default user account which is created during the install, who is a protected administrator (unlike in XP where the user is an Administrator), could not bypass the UAC until its tweaked.

Direct3D WARP10 to enable you to play DX10 Crysis using software renderer only, albeit slowly

Direct3D backwards compatibility has always been "you get what your graphics cards run". For example, Crysis may be a Direct3D 10 game, but if you only have a Direct3D 9-level graphics card, it might only make your jaws open instead of hitting the floor. But that's all going to change comes Windows 7.

Simply put, in Windows 7, you will experience the same graphics fidelity and detail whether you have a Direct3D 9-level graphics card or even no graphics card. The magic fairy dust which makes this possible is called Direct3D 10Level9 and Direct3D WARP10 respectively...

A German court has ruled that Google Inc. must change terms of service that could be interpreted to compromise a user's rights, a decision the consumer advocacy group that brought the suit welcomed Monday as a victory for online transparency.

The suit filed by the Federation of German Consumer Organizations charged that the terms of service for opening an account through Google Mail, Google Documents and other programs could be interpreted as giving the Internet search giant the right to review and even delete a user's information.

Mozilla wants Windows ballot screen changed

Last week Neowin reported that Microsoft had made changes to the Windows browser ballot screen, which will make selecting a browser for consumers much easier. Mozilla was not happy with their placement on the browser ballot screen, and has purposed Microsoft change the screen once again, placing them first selection. All companies need to submit final purposes before November 9 before any more changes can be made. Mozilla purposed a change today that would change the current ordering of the browsers, currently in alphabetical order of manufacture, to order of market share, with the exception of IE. The reordering of the browsers would place Firefox in the first slot, followed by Chrome, Opera and Safari.

Microsoft's LucidTouch: a multi-touch display with pseudo-transparency

From Apple's iPhone to Microsoft's Surface, multi-touch user interfaces are becoming all the rage. The only trouble is that our fingers are both a tool and a hindrance; whatever we're interacting with on the display is momentarily blocked by our finger and our hands.

Microsoft, Mitsubishi, and the University of Toronto are working on a solution, and it's called LucidTouch. Ars spoke with Daniel Wigdor, one of the researchers at the Mitsubishi Electric Research Labs (MERL), to get the inside scoop on what LucidTouch is, what problems the team has run into along the way, and what's coming in the future.

LucidTouch is currently the name for a prototype device that allows users to interact with an 800x480 pixel screen without having to touch the front surface. Instead, users can choose to manipulate objects by touching a sensor pad on the back of the device; this allows users to resize images and text, as well as navigate around any graphical user interface without their hands getting in the way of the display.

Google to Release Detailed Metrics for your AdSense Campaign

Google has made a significant stride with its AdWords program, in which Google announced its Content Placement Reports. This means that AdSense users can get a far more detailed report on where their money is going for Google ad placement.

This level of transparency allows advertisers to see exactly where their ads are showing, including the domain, URL, impressions, clicks, conversions and cost data. Also included with the new Reports are aggregated metrics for traffic generated from AdSense domain sites.

Its an increase in visibility into Googles targeted advertising process and enables business owners and advertisers to not get just an idea of whats going on, but the exact details. For all those exasperated AdSense users out there, this is big news, not only for ad optimization purposes, but for peace of mind.
