First 100 .com domains ever registered

The Internet domain game has been going strong for over 20 years. Have you ever thought back and wondered what some of the first domain registrations were? Surprisingly the first domain name ever registered was symbolics.com. Below you will find the list of the first 100 domain names registered. If only you were able to predict at that time how vast the internet would expand you could have made loads of money. Simple three letter domain names now sell for hundreds of thousands of dollars. It's no surprise that the first 100 list is compromised of many large corporations as it surely cost more than $1.99 to register a domain name in the 1980's.

Domain Name Sells For $2.6m

A US man has sold the domain name pizza.com for $2.6m (£1.3m) - after maintaining the site for just $20 a year since 1994.

Chris Clark, 43, accepted the offer from an anonymous bidder after a week-long online auction. Mr Clark registered the domain name in 1994, when the world wide web was just starting. He had hoped that pizza.com would help to get a contract with a pizza firm for his consulting company.

He sold his business in 2000, but kept paying the $20 annual fees for maintaining the domain, which he also used to sell advertisements.

Mr Clark has admitted regretting that he did not purchase more domain names in the 1990s, when many (now) popular domain names were still available.

Google Fights Domain Name Tasting

Google Inc. announced yesterday that it would begin to take increasing measures against domain name tasting, a practice which exploits a grace period originally designed to rectify legitimate mistakes, such as registrants mistyping the domain name they are about to buy. With automation and a burgeoning online advertising market, entrepreneurs have generated big bucks by exploiting this policy to test hoards of names, keeping just the ones that turn out to generate the most revenue; unfortunately for legitimate users, these entrepreneurs can tie up millions of domain names at any given moment.

Credential Prompt Change in RC2

Hi, everyone. I'm Daniel Oliver, a program manager on the Windows Shell Team.

If you're running Windows Vista on a domain-joined machine, you may have noticed a small change between Windows Vista RC1 and RC2 when the UAC dialog box prompts for credentials in an OTS (over the shoulder) scenario. In RC2, only the empty Password Provider tile is enumerated by default. Some users thought this was a bug, and other users requested we revert to the previous behavior. In addition, many users wanted to know why we made this change. Please allow me to address these questions individually.

New Domain-Based Namespaces On The Way

Things have been a little quiet around here since we released Windows Server 2008 Beta 3 (over 250,000 downloads so far and counting!), so I wanted to take this chance to let you know about something that you'll soon be able to take advantage of in Windows Server 2008. The DFS Namespaces team has let me know that they are adding support for domain-based namespaces that exceed the previous size recommendation of 5,000 folders with targets in a namespace. Starting in Windows Server 2008, you will be able to use the DFS Management snap-in to create a new domain-based namespace in one of the following modes:To create a domain-based namespace in Windows Server 2008 mode, your servers and domain will need to meet the following requirements:Stand-alone namespaces will also benefit from the underlying DFS Namespaces changes made in Windows Server 2008, allowing stand-alone namespaces hosted on servers running Windows Server 2008 to support access-based enumeration.

Pretty cool, no? Stay tuned for more feature update news as we get ready for our next big milestone release :-)
