03.02.2007Microsoft to Remedy ‘Family Discount' Tragedy
It looks like Microsoft is
ready to settle the score with
customers who took advantage
of the Vista Family Discount
offer earlier this week. As
reported on Wednesday, anyone
who purchased Windows Vista
Home Premium using the keys
provided by Microsoft's Vista
Family Discount was unable to
use the keys. Windows Vista
reported them as invalid.
Microsoft still will
not tell me what the keys are
for, however as promised I did
get a call back today. I was
told by Microsoft, "We do not
know how these false keys
where issued, but we do know
the solution." What is
Microsoft's solution?
Anyone who took
advantage of the Windows Vista
Family Discount should be on
the lookout. Microsoft will be
emailing those customers new
product keys for Windows Vista
Home Premium within the next
3-5 days. The new product keys
should work without a hitch.

the download is 2641MB you can
only assume it's Windows
Vista Enterprise Edition. The
download was published a few
hours ago.
We are
currently awaiting a response
from Microsoft and will update
shortly.
Update: Microsoft
have now pulled the download
but the keys remain. Updated
with screenshot of what was. A
Microsoft spokesperson has
confirmed that Vista has not
yet RTM'd but is unable to
explain the odd appearance of

03.11.2006Vista 'Family Discount' Bites Back
In the past, early adopters of
new Windows versions have had
some small hurdles to
overcome. Such hurdles may be
software incompatibility, or
lack of driver support. These
sorts of things are almost
expected with each new Windows
launch. But what would you do
if you bought Windows Vista
and your product key didn't
work? What if Microsoft had
no solution and was unwilling
to issue you a new key?
Many (if not all)
users who took advantage of
Microsoft's Vista Family
Discount have been issued
invalid installation keys and
cannot install Windows Vista
Home Premium. Microsoft
confirms that the keys are
indeed valid, but not for
Windows Vista. The CSR I spoke
with was unable to tell what
the key was for, but it did
appear to be a valid key, for
something.
Microsoft says, "This is a
known issue and has been
escalated to the program
manager." When asked what
could be done I was told, "I
can take your name and number
and call you back when there
is a solution. If that is not
acceptable, I can cancel your
order and issue you a
refund." I was also told,
"There is no expected time
period for a fix at this
time."
If
Microsoft does not have this
issue fixed very soon, they
are going to have a lot of
unhappy customers. In the past
Microsoft has just issued new
keys when this happened. Why
is Microsoft being so tight
gripped about handing out new
keys? If I purchased a valid
key, what is it for? How long
is this going to take to fix?
So many questions, so little
answers.

01.02.2007No more digital product keys for Windows Anytime Upgrade users
Microsoft is making a tweak to the way it will enable Windows Vista users to upgrade to higher-end versions of Windows via its
“Windows Anytime Upgrade”
program.
Windows Anytime Upgrade is a program was a Vista marketing program via which Microsoft has allowed customers to move
from lower-cost, less feature-rich
versions of Vista to higher-end versions.
Starting February 20, Microsoft is planning to end distribution of digital product
keys, company officials said on February 7. Instead, customers will need to obtain a Windows Anytime Upgrade kit, consisting of a Windows DVD and
product keys, either directly from Microsoft, via snail-mail, or in person via a Microsoft retailer. Anytime Upgraders still can order the upgrade kit
online, but the key will be sent by snail-mail.)

28.10.2008Vista Beta 2: Biggest download
in history
In an instant message chat,
Microsoft has told the Windows
Featured Communities that the
demand for Windows Vista Beta
2 has been overwhelming. It
is, in fact, the largest
downloaded software in
history. Currently, they are
serving product keys out ten
times faster then the
downloads can be served. In
fact, they are pumping out
bits as fast as they can - any
faster and there would be a
measurable impact on the
internet. In fact, I quote a
Microsoft representive:
"So, we are
literally saying that if we
increased our bandwidth any
further there's a possibilty
of taking down the Internet -
people might have problems
with World Cup viewing,
etc"
People
who have recieved Vista Beta 2
product keys, but are unable
to download, may need to wait
a few days, up to one week.
Microsoft encoruages users who
want to try out Windows Vista
Beta 2 to order the DVD. When
they recieve the DVD in 1-4
weeks, install it, and
activate it, they will be
automattically guaranteed an
RC1 upgrade.

11.03.2008Dial Keys Gen 2 - FREE beta
Tina Wood:
DialKeys Gen2 provides Windows XP and Windows Vista touch, thumb and pen devices
with an interface for text input, 2 clicks email, Geo Tagged pictures snapping, instant access to location services, and many more features. I
couldn't resist sitting down, or standing up with
Dial Keys to get the skinny on their newest version. Some
new additions and features include the Picture Snapper Features: it transforms your UMPC into a portable camera powerhouse that has the capability of
time and GPS, tagging your photos and directly paste it into an open application in three clicks. Take pictures and paste them directly into Documents
(e.g. Live Writer, Word, ¦) Snap pictures and upload them automatically to web or ftp sites. Time and GPS stamps if enabled, are embedded in the
snapped pictures. This allows you to easily organize the photos on maps or on time lines, a feature travelers and surveyors are keen on.
And like I said earlier
Dial Keys Gen 2 works on XP. Not that any of you aren't running Vista but
just in case you know somebody who knows somebody's cousin who has an ex-boyfriend who met Hillary Clinton once that's still running XP. Just
saying, it works on XP too.

29.01.2008Run KMS on Server 2008, and which keys to use when activating Server 2008
Michael Greene: The documentation for volume activation 2.0 has been updated today for Server 2008. You can find it here:
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=75674 Running KMS on
Server 2008 is functionally very similar to running it on Vista RTM. You leverage slmgr.vbs to bring the service online and then clients find
the server based on the DNS srv record. BTW, Server 2008 KMS can be run within a virtual environment.
If you want to know
which volume license keys to use when activating new machines running Server 2008, see page 19 in the Planning Guide and the
FAQ. You only need to put one key in your KMS, and it
will handle requests from both Vista and Server 2008. There are separate keys, and unique keys based on which version of server you need to
activate. Before you get excited - this is much easier to understand than it might first seem. Simply decide the "top" version
of Server 2008 you might install and then use that MKS key to activate the service on a 2008 server. All versions in groups below that version
will also activate off that key. The groups are simple...

29.02.2008Firefox improved on Vista, but still no protected mode
Since our
last
article on Firefoxs
problems with Vista,
considerable progress has been
made to improve the browser
for Microsofts newest
operating system. We caught up
with Mike Schroepfer, VP of
Engineering at the Mozilla
Foundation, to bring us up to
date.
When Vista first came out,
users reported a number of
problems running Firefox on
it. Have these issues been
worked out now? For example,
Users were unable to set
Firefox as the default browser
for all applications.
Vista
changed the way in which
default applications are
registered. There are many
applications currently
shipping which do not use the
OS provided APIs to launch the
default application and
instead try and read the
registry directly to determine
the default application. These
applications will not
correctly launch Firefox until
they are updated to use the
existing APIs. We are
currently investigating some
workarounds for this - you can
track the progress here: bug
369703 (Add protocol / file
handler registry keys in
HKEY_CURRENT_USER to
workaround apps that read reg
keys directly).

Latest AACS revision defeated a week before release
Despite the best
efforts of the Advanced Access
Content System (AACS)
Licensing Administration (AACS
LA), content pirates remain
one step ahead. A new volume
key used by high-def films
scheduled for release next
week has already been cracked.
The previous AACS volume key
was invalidated by AACS LA
after it was exposed and
broadly disseminated earlier
this month.
The latest beta release of
SlySoft's AnyDVD HD program
can
http://forum.slysoft.com/showt
hread.php?t=4214&page=3>appare
ntly be used to rip HD DVD
discs that use AACS version 3.
Although these won't hit
store shelves until the May
22, pirates have already
successfully tested SlySoft's
program with early release
previews of the Matrix
trilogy.
AACS LA's
attempts to stifle
dissemination of AACS keys and
prevent hackers from
compromising new keys are
obviously meeting with
extremely limited success. The
hacker collective continues to
adapt to AACS revisions and is
demonstrating a capacity to
assimilate new volume keys at
a rate which truly reveals the
futility of resistance. If
keys can be compromised before
HD DVDs bearing those keys are
even released into the wild,
one has to question the
viability of the entire key
revocation model...
