Intel to take 'Averill' to market as Centrino-like platform
Intel will next year launch its third branded PC platform, after Centrino and Viiv, this time pitched at corporate desktops.
As yet there's no word on the platform's go-to-market brandname, but it will almost certainly be based on Intel's 'Averill' platform. Averill was announced at the chip giant's Developer Forum in March this year for availability in 2006.
Averill is based on Intel's upcoming 'Broadwater' chipset, which will ship primarily as the 965 family, but also as the 946 and 963 product lines, it is believed. The platform also takes in Intel's next-generation Gigabit Ethernet controller, 'Nineveh', and its 65nm dual- and single-core Pentium D and Pentium 4 6xx processors.

AMD versus Intel, bye bye Intel
You may recall a few months back when AMD took out full-page newspaper ads to challenge Intel to a dual-core server duel. Intel declined to take up AMD on its offer, but the challenge got us thinking: what would the results of a dual-core desktop CPU fight look like? Many people equate Windows PCs with Intel Pentium processors (and soon will likely be doing the same with Macs), but we've seen dual-core CPU AMD systems power ahead of dual-core Intel-based PCs on more than one occasion.

Machines with Centrino CPU's will also get a new sticker-logo from now on, saying only 'Centrino', without the real CPU name. The amount of cores will still be mentioned on the sticker.

19.02.2008Intel Montevina platform to be named Centrino 2
Intel is planning to rename its brand name for the upcoming notebook Montevina platform to Centrino 2 in order to clear up confusion for consumers,
according to sources at notebook makers. Intel has used the brand name Centrino for four generations of its notebook platforms including Carmel,
Sonoma, Napa and Santa Rosa. Although the technology and specifications have continued to improve, the unchanging brand name has left consumers unable
to identify the differences, which has also lowered recognition in the market.
Notebook makers agree with Intel's decision, since they
believe most consumers do not familiar with the specifics of each platform and codename. The new marketing strategy should give consumers the feeling
of a tangible upgrade and will hopefully spur replacement demand.

18.02.2008Intel: Caneland turning AMD's server momentum around
Intel is gearing up to launch the its Xeon 7300 processor, the last piece of its Core micro-architecture strategy. It's a critical product that is
designed to attack AMD in a market that is still dominated by the green team. But Intel believes that is going to change.
An
internal newsletter article, Intel is preparing its employees for the launch of the Caneland platform and the Xeon 7300 processor, previously
code-named "Tigerton". The company chooses aggressive phrases to stress its confidence that the MP processor will successfully "tackle" what is
AMD's only remaining bastion today.
Intel acknowledged that AMD "has gained market share versus Intel for several quarters
based on MP platforms and its Hypertransport architecture," which enabled the company to convince many big OEMs to switch to the Opteron processor.
However, Intel said that the Xeon 7300 platform is "key to helping turn this AMD momentum around". "We're excited to hear some of AMD's largest
OEMs now calling the Caneland platform their 'virtualization platform of choice'," the article states. ..

11.04.2008Intel Reportedly to Simplify Brand-Names
In the recent years the
product portfolio of Intel
Corp. extended tremendously as
a result of platformization as
well as transition to
multi-core technologies,
making it uneasy for customers
to determine the product they
need. But that is going to

performs global platform
simplification process in the

It was already reported that
the world's largest chipmaker
will get rid of Intel Viiv and
Intel vPro brand-names going
forward, but apparently the
changes will be much more
substantial, according to
reports from Japanese and
Taiwanese web-sites. For
instance, Intel Core 2
processors will lose their
"Solo", "Duo" or "Quad"
differentiators, but will be
marketed under Intel Core 2
brand-names. Intel Pentium D
and Intel Pentium Dual-Core
chips, despite of the fact
that they are based on
different micro-architectures,
will be sold under Intel
Pentium label. Nevertheless,
Intel Celeron, Intel Core
Extreme and Intel Xeon
trademarks will be
retained.

22.10.2008AMD Kills Quad FX Platform
AMD diverts resources from the Quad FX platform development the same year it promises Quad FX is the enthusiast future.
AMD
excited many technology enthusiasts last year when it introduced the Quad FX platform. AMD representatives touted this platform as the next big thing
from AMD.
AMD apparently talked up its Quad FX enthusiast platform so well that
Intel decided to roll out a
competing product in its unreleased Skulltrail platform. When the
Quad FX platform first hit market in January of 2007 it seemed doomed from the start to many with steep price premiums for the
mainboards and the processors. These price premiums led to the lethargic adoption of the platform.

04.02.2008Intel's Moorestown platform to get 3.5G support
Intel's upcoming Moorestown chip platform will include optional support for high-speed cellular data services when it hits the market in 2009 or
2010, Intel said Monday. Moorestown will be based on Lincroft, a system-on-chip that includes an Atom processor core and a memory controller hub, and
a chipset called Langwell. Designed for small, handheld computers that Intel calls Mobile Internet Devices, Moorestown will offer optional support for
both WiMax and HSPA (High Speed Packet Access) cellular networks.
Intel is heavily pushing WiMax, which it sees as the best option for
future wireless broadband services. But WiMax availability is very limited and it will take time for networks to enter commercial operation and expand
their coverage areas. The addition of HSPA support to Moorestown hints that Intel recognizes that WiMax may not be extensively deployed as quickly as
it would like, and users will want an alternative way of connecting wirelessly outside of Wi-Fi hotspots.
