Intel Insiders kindly pointed out something we failed to mention “ November 11 is a Sunday. Intel typically announces products on a Monday at midnight EST. Chillisoft managing director Geoff Cossey says he chose has company's name to brand it as fun and to build marketing around it.

Lab test: Four Dell and HP workstations

There was a time when workstations occupied a highly competitive niche in the hardware market. In those days, some 10 years ago, companies such as Sun Microsystems, SGI, IBM, HP, and Dell competed fiercely to deliver the top desktop systems characterised by powerful graphics and processing engines. An added element to this competition was the vendors' reliance on vastly different processor architectures to deliver the knockout performance. A decade later, the market segment is significantly different.

The strange afterlife of AltaVista

Shane Schick: When the Microsoft bid for Yahoo broke a week ago, I decided to brave the snowstorm that had blanketed Toronto to go talk about the implications on CBC Newsworld. They asked the standard questions: Why Microsoft was making this move, what would it mean for the search market, and so on. I knew in advance what the last question would be, but I surprised myself with the answer.

"So do you think this will be good or bad for customers?" the host asked.

"Well, if you think about it, 10 years ago the big names in search were Yahoo and AltaVista," I began.

"Alta who?" the host said, chuckling.

2007 to 2027: The shapes of things to come in IT

Gerald M. Weinberg: The one thing I've learned from a half-century in the computer industry is that we can predict anything but the future. In other words, I predict that the future will surprise us, so to prepare for the future, we'd better stay adaptable.

Though the question "What's coming?" seems to imply change, I feel somewhat safer predicting certain things that won't change in the next 50 years because they haven't changed in the past 50. First and foremost, human beings won't change. They'll continue to blunder around emotionally, failing to do what they know they ought to do when building and supporting computer systems. For that reason, the need for effective managers will not change, but it will grow more critical.
