Burn your Windows Vista DVD ISO's slowly

Microsoft has warned public beta testers to burn downloaded Vista ISOs to disc at speeds as slow as 1X or 2X in order to get a reliable burn.

It says a key reason behind installation failure of Vista is that many DVD burners cannot reliably burn a disc at high speed.

The interesting tidbit was included in the release notes for the interim update to Vista Beta 2 (build 5456.5; not publicly available) and sheds light on the magnitude of the problem of unreliable DVD burns.

New RealPlayer allows YouTube video download

http://www.realnetworks.com/>R eal Networks has announced a new version of their RealPlayer today that will be available as a PC-only public Beta in June. The player allows users to download and organize nearly all embedded internet video content (Flash, WMV, QuickTime) including content from popular video sites like YouTube, Comedy Central and Cnet.

The player was demonstrated for me and actually looks pretty impressive. The new video download feature integrates fairly elegantly into your Web browser (yes, it works on Firefox). It works by temporarily displaying a small, fairly unobtrusive download tab in the right top corner of any video content it detects on a given Web page. It's even able to record streaming internet video in real time.

It looks like a great improvement over the slow, intrusive RealPlayer I remember. One feature it lacks, however is the ability to export your downloaded video content to an iPod-compatible format. You can, however, use RealPlayer burn your downloaded videos to CD and if you pony-up some money for RealPlayer Plus, they give the ability to burn video content to DVD. Some small improvements have also been made to speed up the load-time of the application and cut-out many of the annoying installation questions.

Yahoo: Burn Your DRMed Tracks to CD Now

Yahoo has become the latest company to abandon customers who bought tracks from its music store encoded with DRM (digital rights management), drawing fire from the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF).

On Sept. 30, Yahoo will shut down the servers that are needed to reauthorize music purchased from its failed Unlimited Music Store if it is transferred to a new PC, Yahoo said in an e-mail to customers. The rule to designed to slow music piracy. Re-authorization is also needed if someone upgrades their PC's operating system.

The only workaround for customers wanting to listen to their music on a new or upgraded computer after this date is to burn the tracks to a CD and then reload them on a PC.

London to have satellites that monitor your speed

In a trial that can only be described as Big Brotherly, London is going is going to start trials of attempting to stop speeders from space. The basic idea works around that the vehicles are equipped with information about speed limits for public roads. A satellite will monitor the speed of the car vs. the pre-installed data to determine if the car is speeding. If the car is found to be speeding then one of two things can happen. The car can either be slowed down by the satellite (voluntary mode) or the car can alert you that you need to slow down but won't actually adjust the vehicles speed (advisory mode).

Breakthrough in Blue Lasers Yields 10X Write Times

Nichia Corporation of Japan has announced a new blue-violet laser that can fill up a 54GB double-layer disc at more than 10X record speed, compared to typical 2x and 4x Blu-ray/HD-DVD format disc recorders. In other words, instead of a 50 minute write-time at 2x, the future holds a 10 minute write-time at 10x. According to blue laser expert Steven DenBaars, the key to faster write times lies in the power of the laser. Faster burn times allow the disc to be rotated at a higher speed. A 2X device can sustain a write speed of only 8.99 Mbps, while a 10X laser disc recorder can achieve a writing velocity of 44.9 Mbps.

Nichia's new blue-violet semiconductor laser diodes can reportedly operate at 320 mW (milliwatts), while the average current consumer grade blue laser devices are in the range of 20mW. " Writing speed is totally dictated by the output power. The more power you have, the faster you can spin the disk ," DenBaars said. The UCSB team, led by blue laser inventor and former Nichia researcher Shuji Nakamura, recently demonstrated the world's first nonpolar blue-violet laser diodes. The technology, which is still two to four years away, could eventually produce blue laser diodes that operate in the range of 500 mW.
