03.11.2008Windows 7 Build 6801 Tips and Tricks Guide
Chris Holmes and Kristan Kenney: Well its that time again. PDC has come and gone, and with it comes a build of the much anticipated Windows 7.
Windows 7 delivers many new and interesting features, and in our opinion comes much closer to delivering on that wonderful Longhorn vision we saw at
PDC 2003. The purpose of this guide is to offer insight into some of the cool new features in Windows 7 build 6801 and also to provide workarounds
for some of the minor issues we encountered while using this build. Lets get to it then shall we?

31.10.2008Windows 7 Build 6801 has the Superbar, too
Microsoft deceived every PDC2008 attendee by saying that the build they handed out, build 6801, didn't have the new "superbar" taskbar replacement
that was being shown off throughout the conference.
Well, it turns out that it really is in the build, you just have to
be properly authenticated in Redmond. Rafael (
withinwindows.com) has decrypted this
mystery and has provided a patch (with instructions) that will enable the superbar on any 6801 install.

03.11.2008Oh yes, the Superbar is available in Windows 7 Build 6801
Wishing that the new "Superbar" was available for the PDC build of Windows 7? What about for your trusty copy of Vista? Well it isn't
available for Vista yet (I am sure someone will whip up someway of porting it over) but it is available to all users who have a copy of Windows 7
Build 6801.
Rafael, the well known Ux theme patcher, from
withinwindows.com, has uncovered how to bring this breakthrough feature available to anyone who is lucky enough to have Windows
7 build 6801. It does take some changing to the OS to enable this hidden feature but it is well worth it.
Windows 7's "Superbar" was
demonstrated heavily at Microsoft's PDC. For more information and full demonstrations checkout our

03.11.2008Windows 7 pre-beta build is 6801
Microsoft announced the availability of a critical security patch
yesterday affecting a
variety of Windows operating systems.
Interestingly, the Windows 7 pre-beta build, which will be available to developers next Tuesday, also
contains the bug. Microsoft stated "Customers running Windows 7 Pre-Beta are encouraged to download and apply the update to their systems. On Windows
7 Pre-Beta systems, the vulnerable code path is only accessible to authenticated users. This vulnerability is not liable to be triggered if the
attacker is not authenticated, and therefore would be rated Important."
In a
support article Microsoft details some Windows 7 Pre-Beta file information notes. The build string on the notes is
6.1.6801.4106, the same build string that has been
screenshotted recently.
It is
believed that the 6801 build is a
milestone 3 (M3) build released to select customers and partners over the last few months.
Microsoft will be releasing the build to
attendees at their
professional developers conference next Tuesday.

24.10.2008Windows 7 pre-beta build: Whats inside
Microsoft isnt going to show Windows 7 to attendees of the Professional Developers Conference (PDC) in Los Angeles until Tuesday, October 28. But new
info about whats part of the pre-beta build that will be provided to show-goers is beginning to trickle out.
"According to a variety of
sources, the build that will be distributed at PDC and, a week-plus later, at the companys Windows Hardware Engineering Conference (WinHEC) will
be one of the M3 (Milestone 3) builds. Like the build that leaked in September, this will be a 6801 numbered build, sources say. But it doesnt seem
to be the same one I saw a few weeks back. UX Evangelist blogger Stephen Chapman says it will likely be a 6801 M3 build which Microsoft finalized on
October 20."
Microsoft guru Mary-Jo Foley sheds some light on what we can expect in the soon to come build. Read on at the source for a
comprehensive list of expected new features.

Ed Bott: Microsoft took the wraps off Windows 7 for the first time at the Professional Developers Conference in Los Angeles three weeks ago. That

18.11.2008Windows 7 Build 6801 Desktop Slideshow
Chris Holmes: Well folks, were at it again. Last night I was having a discussion with
Rafael Rivera and we got to wondering if there was something more that Microsoft was hiding away from us, using the same method
as they did to tuck away the superbar. With that said, I started crawling my system with some tools to find references, as Rafaels laptop was acting
up and my machine could accomplish the task much quicker. Completely to my suprise, the system pulled some results across many other files in the
system. Upon examination, Rafael discovered that this all ties into a new feature that we assume will be called Desktop Slideshow. Think of this
as a dreamscene-esque type feature but without the hassle and the chugging of your CPU if you try to play a video with any decent resolution.

28.10.2008Lessons learned from installing Windows 7, over 16 times
When the first Windows 7 beta (build 6801) was announced at PDC in late 2008, everyone was excited, myself included. Within a few days after release I
was happily running my very first version of Windows 7. Right around new years day, Microsoft released the first public beta (build 7000) of the next
gen OS. Since Microsoft was kind enough to share it with me, I decided to share it with everyone I know. Starting with my immediate family computers
and expanding to my network of friends and coworkers. I went on a upgrading frenzy, installing Windows 7 on just about any PC I could get my hands on.

26.05.2009Windows 7 6801 users can now get Aero Peek, too
Rafael Rivera and Chris Holmes have been really working their butts off on patching Windows 7 6801 completely, and they have now managed to not only
get every feature previously in the utility, but now Aero Peek also, while not even touching system files!
You can download the new
version of their "Blue Badge" utility (revision 03) in both x86 and x64 flavors at the source.

10.12.2008Blue Badge patch for Windows 7 unlocks additional features
On November 2,
Rafael Rivera, announced that his indications that the Windows 7 Pre-Beta Build 6801 has some locked additional options,
were right. The
locked content is primarily related to the UI that actually is one of the most looked-upon things in Windows 7. By his notices, it is not hard to
conclude that some contents are locked with reason, because they are far away from stable, even for a pre-beta release.
He explained the
type of protection that Win7 PB build 6801 has on his entry, and a way how he got to it. The entry also includes the way to get that content
yourself.
By that scheme, an unlocking tool, called the
Blue Badge
is available for download. This tool should make the already announced steps much easier. Of course, this is still a risky operation, and you take it
on your own risk.
These files are to be patched with Blue Badge. The patch is available only for x86 versions; the x64 is still not released.
If case you already have a superbar patch applied, Blue Badge will NOT work.

(The Windows 7 build attendees got is
the September build 6801 that leaked out a month ago. The new taskbar and
quite a bit of the other eye candy Microsoft showed off during the October 28 PDC keynote aren’t part of the pre-beta build.)
