Microsoft's Latest Critical Fixes Include Buggy Windows Patch

For the second time in three months, Microsoft has released a buggy patch for problems it had deemed to be "critical."

Messages on Microsoft's newsgroups about problems began accumulating as early as Wednesday Oct. 12, within 24 hours of the patches' debut. Late Friday, Microsoft acknowledged the buggy patch in one of its infrequent security advisories, and said that customers had reported a wide variety of strange behaviors after installing one of the three critical patches released that week.

Yesterday we covered the 7048 screenshot leak but word reaches us that an x64 version of 7048 has leaked to popular torrent sites today. 7048 carries the build tag 7048.0.winmain.090219-1845 meaning it was compiled on the 19th February. According to the screenshots that leaked yesterday 7048 includes a tweaked start button, new icons for Notes, Paint and Calculator applications and Aero Peek is enabled on alt+tab. 7048 is a pre-RC1 compile of Windows 7 and is not likely to become the final RC1 build.

80+ bug fixes in store for Mac OS X 10.5.7

Although Apple's new Snow Leopard operating system is in the pipeline, and coming up for a release sometime this year, work it still being continued on their current operating system, Leopard. As AppleInsider reports, on Thursday, Apple made a new build (codenamed "Juno") of Leopard's 10.5.7 available to developers, bringing with it over 80 bug fixes and updates. Those who have had some hands on time with the build (number 9J30) have said it includes an updated Flash Player, as well as 5 other bug fixes, bringing the grand total in the 10.5.7 update to over 80, as mentioned.

With Windows 7 gearing towards the RC release in April 10, WinFuture has posted some screenshots of the latest Windows 7 build 7048 which it mentions to be available only to Microsoft Partners and select internal testers. According to WinFuture, the build was compiled at 18:45 hours on 19th February as inferred from the build string - 7048.0.winmain.090219-1845 WinFuture's screenshots highlights some of the changes mentioned by Microsoft to be done in Windows 7 RC.

Build 7048 confirmed, Windows 7 RC1 on February 27?

WinFuture.de claims that an RC1 build (might be 7048, but not necessarily) will be released privately sometime around February 27, 2009. MSDN and TechNet subscribers, participants of the Technology Adopters Program (TAP), and beta testers signed up on Microsoft Connect will all be getting this RC1 build, though it's not clear whether they will all receive the build on the same day. The public Release Candidate is expected to arrive sometime in April.

Microsoft fixes bug in Windows Live file-sharing service

Microsoft confirmed it has fixed a bug in its online file storage and sharing service Windows Live FolderShare after users reported problems that the service was deleting files without user authorization.



Microsoft sent an e-mail to users Friday alerting them that it has fixed a bug that may have "accidentally moved" user files from their original folders into the FolderShare Trash folder, and that users should not delete files in Trash until they ensure they were meant to be deleted. It also advised users how to retrieve deleted files from the Trash folder.



A copy of the information sent to users has been posted on the FolderShare Web site.

Microsoft Office 2007 SP2 due today

Microsoft is currently readying its download servers for Office 2007 Service Pack 2 today. Service Pack 2 includes some significant changes, including built-in ability to save as ODF & PDF formats, improvements to Outlook's performance and calendar reliability and significant bug fixes for charts in core Office applications. It is also a rollup of all fixes that have previously been released for Office 2007 products. The company has published a support article detailing the various fixes and improvements contained in the SP2 update.

Very few time after the last update, which was numbered as build 1024, Microsoft has released a new build of Windows Live Mail Desktop Beta, build 1083. Instead of being a bug fix only release, the team decided to implement quite a few features to this new release alongside the 150 bug fixes:

By linking your Live ID to your user account in Windows 7 (from build 7048), you can now stream your home media to your another PC/laptop connected to a work or public network. Both your home network PC and work network PC should be linked to the same Live ID account. The media is streamed always from home network to work or public network. This feature partially worked in build 7048, but works pretty neat in the recent 7057 build.
