blue screen of death is actually the not-so-subtle gag icon Leopard uses to represent Windows machines on your local network. (Is it any wonder why PC
and Mac fanboys tend to get in so many fights?) Granted, many Leopard beta users have seen this icon since the early releases, but we didnt actually
think the shipping version would include something so pompous and galling to the other 90%.

The definition of the Blue Screen of Death acronym BSoD may soon be replaced by a more ominous meaning, Black Screen of Death. In an e-mail sent to
Windows distributors a Microsoft representative laid out the details of what unlicensed Vista users can expect.
"Good afternoon, as of
this week, Microsoft has activated a function in Vista called 'Reduced Functionality.' This is a specific function in Vista that effectively
disables non genuine copies of Windows. Therefore anyone who has a pirated copy of Vista will experience:
A black screen after one hour of
browsing
No start menu or task bar
No desktop
Please communicate this anti piracy initiative from Microsoft to your resellers --
note this function has only just been activated in Vista worldwide and therefore any issues with non genuine versions will start to arise from now
onward."
While it isn't unusual for Microsoft to impede upon the functionality of unlicensed or falsely licensed copies of Windows,
this seems to be a new direction in regards to their stance on warning users. Typically users of unauthorized copies of Windows have been alerted to
the status of their software legitimacy via Windows Genuine Advantage (WGA). The new "Reduced Functionality" approach is certainly more aggressive,
and according to the Microsoft representative, will reduce the functionality of an unauthorized Windows system to the point of being near useless
until properly licensed.

Apple support drones are getting an earful from Mac users who are getting the dreaded Blue Screen of Death while trying to update to the latest and
greatest version of OS X. This
thread on an official
Apple support forum has more than 200 posts left in 25 hours at time of writing. A large percentage of the writers report getting a persistent
blue screen that forces them to abort their installation of Leopard.
Among the signs that something is awry is the following post
from a Mac user in Australia:
I've just been on the phone to Apple AU support for an hour (around half of that spent on
hold, but on-and-off as they sometimes consulted other techs), and they definitely know of the BSOD issue, said they started taking calls from 9am
Friday as the first (early courier!) deliveries of Leopard were installed, and they've been flat out, "phones ringing non-stop" since then. Implied
that Apple stateside has been swamped (as you can imagine) and they haven't been able to pinpoint the issue causing the BSOD but "they're looking
into it".
It's still not clear what's causing the snafu...

found by a security researcher shows. Sending a deliberately
malformed network negotiation request can force a Windows 7 system into a page fault that triggers a "blue screen of death" error, even without the
user's help in launching the code. The attack affects both 32-bit and 64-bit versions of the OS.

Doug Klokow: While putting together a Vista image using MDT (RTM), I assembled a group of drivers to support a number of HP machine models. After
assembling a list of machines I downloaded a number of drivers directly from HP's website, and added them into the out-of-box drivers in MDT.
I had several machine models which were blue screening after the first reboot, and finally determined that the Blue Screen was the
result of a driver I had included to support ATI graphics for a nc6400 laptop. The HP file was
SP36487 and included the ATI video driver to support the laptop,
and also a small driver identified as a ATI PCI Express (3GIO) Filter Driver, and was accompanied by MSI which when run was identified as a North
Bridge Filter Driver.

Michael Horowitz : Like many of you, my copies of Windows XP crash with the now-classic Blue Screen of Death (BSOD). When this happened a couple
times recently to a new ThinkCentre A61 tower, I called Lenovo tech support. As the title of this posting suggests, it did not go well.
When Windows XP crashes, the default behavior is to create a Minidump, a small file (only 88K) with a summary of, hopefully, the most
important information about the failure. I wrote about Minidumps back in November (see
Dealing with software crashes, Part 2). If your copy of
Windows has crashed (a.k.a. "blue screened") in the past, you may find a Minidump describing the problem in the
C:WINDOWSMinidump folder. The format of the filename is MiniMMDDYY-99.DMP (the last two numbers are
a sequence number).

reveals his initials to be BIC and his first name to be Brian, also says that the "back to the future call" was about a downed Internet connection
-- not about a Windows system crash, aka the Blue Screen of Death (BSOD). He also wrote: "Microsoft's calling me back is a testimony to their
superior technical support."
In his Wednesday post, Brian "revealed" the phone number that Microsoft technical support left for him,
though, apparently shy now because of the publicity his post has generated, he has not called back. That could help Microsoft confirm the case's
legitimacy. The company earlier said it was taking the incident seriously and trying to trace the incident.
