Microsoft is 30 years old today! have a look at the Microsoft Timeline
It's hard to believe that Microsoft is already 30 years old. The company that made Redmond, Washington, a household name was actually founded in 1975 in another city by two young Seattle men, one of whom was a college dropout. From this inauspicious beginning came an equally improbable vision: A personal computer on every desk and in every home. Thirty years later, it seems so obvious. But at the time, when only a handful of people knew what a personal computer was, it was a great leap of faith and daring.

23.10.2007Microsoft Web Executive Leaves
Microsoft Corp. announced the departure of several executives Thursday, among them Steve Berkowitz, senior vice president of Microsoft's online
business group, a Silicon Valley veteran recruited to help fix its unprofitable Web business. Berkowitz will hand off his duties to three insiders:
Satya Nadella, currently in charge of search and search advertising engineering; Bill Veghte, a Windows marketing executive; and Brian McAndrews,
formerly the chief executive of online advertising group aQuantive, which Microsoft acquired last year. Berkowitz joined Microsoft in 2006 after
turning around Oakland, Calif.-based Ask.com, which, with related sites, was acquired by InterActiveCorp for $2.3 billion during his tenure as
chief executive; no reason was given for his departure, and he will stay through August to help with the transition.
Brought in to help
turn around Microsoft's own Web business, Berkowitz was charged with expanding the audience on its disparate MSN and Windows Live sites - making
them more attractive to advertisers - and forging new business relationships, such as the ad partnership announced last summer with social news site
Digg.com. With Berkowitz's departure, all advertising efforts will be consolidated under McAndrews. MSN head Joanne Bradford will report to
Nadella. Microsoft spokesman Lou Gellos said today's announcement is unrelated to the Yahoo negotiations.

15.02.2008Inside Microsoft's plan to bring in outside talent
Before Brian McAndrews agreed to take charge of a crucial piece of Microsoft Corp.'s online advertising business, he insisted on a key condition:
that he be granted certain power over the engineering part of the operation.
The new job didn't have to include that authority,
but Mr. McAndrews, new to the company, argued that to succeed in his mandate - leading the charge against Google Inc. - he needed it. And in
Microsoft's engineering-driven culture, such a team could promise something else for Mr. McAndrews: longevity as a Microsoft executive.
That Microsoft granted his request illustrates a new approach Chief Executive Steve Ballmer is taking as he tries to expand the Redmond,
Wash., company into new areas from online music to videogames to Internet advertising. Mr. Ballmer has found he must tap outsiders rather than rely so
heavily on homegrown managers as in the past.
How Microsoft fares with Mr. McAndrews will be a test for Mr. Ballmer, who has
tried over the years to make the company a more hospitable place for outside talent. Another test will be Don Mattrick, whom Microsoft hired this
summer to head its videogame group after a long career as a top executive at game giant Electronic Arts Inc. ..

20.05.2008Microsoft Closes $6 billion Buyout of aQuantive
As part of an online
advertising push designed to
leapfrog Yahoo and present a
serious challenge to Google,
Microsoft has just closed a
$6 billion deal with
digital marketing company
aQuantive. As the software
industry begins a shift from
traditional desktop programs
to web-based applications, MS
fears the disruption could
affect all of its products in
ways yet unknown; the purchase
of aQuantive is designed to
help the company stay
profitable during the
transition period.
" Our goal is to be No. 1
or No. 2, " Kevin Johnson,
president of Microsoft
Corp.'s platforms and
services division, said in an
interview last week. Johnson
added that units in the two
companies (MS and aQuantive)
are being combined and
reorganized to provide an
advertising platform to
support new Web-based
services. A new advertising
and publishing solutions group
is being formed, under a plan
Johnson and aQuantive Chief
Executive Brian McAndrews
outlined last week with The
Associated Press. The group,
to be led by McAndrews,
includes aQuantive's
ad-serving technologies and
tools for tracking the success
of online ad campaigns, and
DrivePM, which extends
Microsoft's ability to sell
Web ads to aQuantive's broad
network of top sites.
AQuantive's Avenue
A/Razorfish, a well-regarded
Web design and online
advertising agency, will
operate " at arm's
length, " McAndrews
said.

14.08.2007Microsoft: Google gets undue credit for ad conversions
Google undeservedly has gotten all the credit for many clicks on the online ads it delivers via its search engine, but Microsoft wants to put a stop
to that. So said Brian McAndrews, senior vice president of Microsofts Advertiser Publisher Solutions Group during a panel discussion at the Web 2.0
Summit in San Francisco Thursday. Currently, systems for tracking ad conversions and analyzing online marketing campaigns focus on the last ad a user
viewed or clicked on, he said. This gives all credit to that last publisher and not to others the user may have been at before and influenced the user
to seek more information about the advertiser, McAndrews said.
In particular, this situation has unfairly benefitted Google because many
times someone will see a display ad on a site and go to Google, search for the vendors name, and then click on the vendors text ad served by Google,
he said. But Microsoft is developing a technology called "conversion attribution" that will track the trail of ads seen by a user, so that
advertisers get a more complete understanding of how effective their marketing campaigns are, he said.

and video advertising for EDGAR Online and its global audience of more than 2 million unique visitors per month, and EDGAR Online will provide
content, such as Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) filing documents, to MSN Money.
EDGAR Online attracts a highly
targeted audience with its deep business and financial content, and coupling that audience with Microsofts advertising technologies is going to be a
winning combination for advertisers, said Brian McAndrews, senior vice president, Advertiser and Publisher Solutions at Microsoft. The inclusion of
EDGAR Online as a syndicated advertising partner site and the addition of its content to MSN Money will add value for our users and will help
advertisers reach an even broader audience in this highly attractive financial vertical...

12.08.2009So how did Microsoft ship Office 2007 SP1 so "Early"?
Brian Smith: Blogging in Microsoft does allow a great deal of freedom to the blogger, but the final test before hitting "publish" is always to think
"What would this story look like on the front page of the New York Times, or Wall Street Journal". I think the worst case interpretation of this
blog might give a headline like "Steve Ballmer got it wrong" says Brian Smith . But hopefully it wouldn't come to that (he didn't get it
wrong anyway) - and it probably wouldn't be the front page, and probably wouldn't even make the Valley View (my local paper) - so here goes...
At the time of the project conference the work on SP1 was going well - still not complete, but homing in on the final few fixes. So
we knew we would soon have a release date we could stick to - but we weren't quite there. Steve Ballmer did a great keynote on the future of project
and work management - along with some demonstrations of what is coming in the next release - and then to Q & A.
The inevitable
question was the date of SP1!

05.12.2007Blogger claims 10-year wait for Microsoft tech support call
The semi-anonymous blogger whose account earlier this week about getting a tech support callback from Microsoft Corp. a decade later generated heavy
interest and conspiracy theories among techies posted a follow-up late Wednesday, in which he insisted "this is not a hoax." The blogger, who
reveals his initials to be BIC and his first name to be Brian, also says that the "back to the future call" was about a downed Internet connection

In his Wednesday post, Brian "revealed" the phone number that Microsoft technical support left for him,
though, apparently shy now because of the publicity his post has generated, he has not called back. That could help Microsoft confirm the case's
legitimacy. The company earlier said it was taking the incident seriously and trying to trace the incident.
