Why Windows 'Safe Mode' Isn't So Safe

Windows has, for many years, come with a special mode you can load at boot called Safe Mode. The idea is that non-essential services and software don't load in safe mode and so it can be useful in diagnosing system problems.

You might assume that it can be useful in fixing malware infections and you'd be right, but not in all cases. As McAfee's Avert Labs points out in a blog entry, it's possible for malware to set itself up to load even in Safe Mode.

IE7 vs. IE8 in VSTS 2008 SP1 Load test

As we all know, IE8 is coming out soon (Beta 2 is already released) and one of the major performance changes in IE8 is opening up to 6 concurrent connections per host, comparing to only 2 in IE7.

So, the question is: Does VSTS have IE8? And if it does, does it really open 6 connections per host?

New tool enables loading of unsigned drivers in Vista

A new software tool has been released by Linchpin Labs that allows the loading of unsigned and legacy drivers on Windows XP, 2003, and most importantly Vista.

One of the system management and control methods that Microsoft implemented with Windows Vista is requiring system drivers to be digitally signed before they will load properly within the system. If a user or administrator wishes to load an unsigned or legacy driver, they will either need to reboot into a limited functionality mode or just do without the functions that the driver would have provided.

As others have pointed out, this step will do nothing to prevent malware authors from being able to load their drivers into the system. Either they will exploit the lax jurisdiction and corporate oversight of various countries to establish a corporate shell and gain legitimate digitally signed driver certification, or they will just exploit weaknesses in already-signed drivers.

Neowin: New Server going online today!

Today our coders will be turning on our new uber cool 64-bit mega server, which has been placed at our new multi-homed DC in the state of Michigan. The new server will initially only account for 1/3 of Neowin's total load, but by the weekend the whole site will be transferred to it so that our 4 older servers can be switched off and retrieved from the DC in Chicago.

We should have no downtime at all this time around, as the server is more than capable of handling Neowin for the short period needed to transfer our other servers. DNS will eventually update for everyone as we transfer the complete load to the new server, until then Neowin can be accessed from both Data Center's.

Chrome for Mac in progress - First screenshot posted

Mike Pinkerton, co-creator of Camino and a developer on the Mac version of Google Chrome, has posted the first screenshot of Mac Chrome to his blog. One thing to note though is that the Chrome for Mac is still in progress and what you see in the above screenshot is the first webpage that Mike managed to load in the browser. The only thing that this browser can do currently is load web pages in the renderer processes and display them in tabs. The team had managed to create new windows and tabs using the shared code, which allowed renderer processes to spawn/quit.

SQL Server 2008 ETL World Record

Len Wyatt: Today at the launch of SQL Server 2008, you may have seen the references to world-record performance doing a load of data using SSIS. Microsoft and Unisys announced a record for loading data into a relational database using an Extract, Transform and Load (ETL) tool. Over 1 TB of TPC-H data was loaded in under 30 minutes. I wanted to provide some background material in the form of a Q&A on the record, since its hard to give many details in the context of a launch event. We are also planning a paper that talks about all this, so think of this article as a place-holder until the full paper comes along. I hope you find this background information useful.

The Ship Free Weekend - Full Steam Ahead

Just a head's up for anyone who missed my news post the other day. Outerlight's MMT (massively mysterious thriller) The Ship has begun the free weekend event on Valve's Steam service.

You can play the entire game, all game modes, all maps until November 5th at 1PM PDT. If you haven't done so already, just load up the game in Steam, you should get a "Steam Update" window popup that will give you the chance to do so. Load it up, and go kill people. With a flare gun? Maybe a large umbrella? Or perhaps watch someone not take care of themselves to well, and turn to ashes because they didn't drink something!

Microsoft: We Loaded 1TB in 30 Minutes with SSIS, and So Can You

In February 2008, Microsoft announced a record-breaking data load using Microsoft® SQL Server® Integration Services (SSIS): 1 TB of data in less than 30 minutes. That data load, using SQL Server Integration Services, was 30% faster than the previous best time using a commercial ETL tool. This paper outlines what it took: the software, hardware, and configuration used. We will describe what we did to achieve that result, and offer suggestions for how to relate these techniques to typical scenarios. Even for customers who don't have needs quite like this benchmark, such efforts can teach a lot about getting optimal performance.

Microsoft narrows scope of Home Server bug

Microsoft Corp. product managers Friday claimed that a data corruption bug in Windows Home Server crops up only when the system is under an "extreme load," but also defended their decision to sound a general alarm before they had completed their investigation.

The news that Windows Home Server (WHS) could corrupt files raised a storm of criticism from customers and observers alike.

"The problem isn't one hundred percent reproducible, and depends on quite a few different factors," explained Todd Headrick, the product planning manager on the Windows Home Server (WHS) team. "Home Server has to be under an extreme load while doing a large file copy," he said, adding that the flaw comes into play only in instances when the file server's cache is full and the user is editing a file previously saved to a shared folder.

InkSeine Update is Live

Matt Faulkner: The updated version of InkSeine that I posted about last week is now live.  The main reason for the update was because of a localization issue:

The worst symptom of this bug is that some users who use non-American ways to write decimal numbers or dates are unable to load InkSeine notes that they have saved. The fix does NOT make it possible to load any files that this bug caused to be saved in the "bad" format, but any new ones that you create going forward will not have this problem. The other symptoms of this bug are that Copy/Paste, Undo/Redo, and a few other features will not work. Please accept our sincerest apologies if you have been stricken by this bug.

Even if the localization issue doesn't effect you, there are still a few fixes included as well...
