14.12.2005Windows XP SP3 Yields Performance Gains Over Vista SP1
After a disappointing showing by Windows Vista SP1 (see previous post), we were pleasantly surprised to discover that Windows XP Service Pack 3
(v.3244) delivers a measurable performance boost to this aging desktop OS. Testing with OfficeBench showed an 10% performance boost vs. the same
configuration running under Windows XP w/Service Pack 2.
Since SP3 was supposed to be mostly a bug-fix/patch consolidation release - unlike
w/Vista SP1, Microsoft made no promises of improved performance for XP - the unexpected speed boost comes as a nice bonus. In fact, XP SP3 is
shaping-up to be a "must have" update for the majority of users who are still running Redmond's not-so-latest and greatest desktop
OS.
Of course, none of this bodes well for Vista, which is now more than 2x slower than the most current builds of its older sibling.
Suffice to say that performance-minded users will likely choose to stick with the now even speedier Windows XP - at least until more "Windows
7" information becomes publicly available.

04.03.2008Microsoft denies Sony's Vista hardware claims
Microsoft has denied Sony's
claim that the current release

drives.
The spat
between the companies arose
after Sony revealed to
ZDNet.co.uk that it would not
include Turbo Memory an
embedded flash memory module

name Robson in this summer's

will not allow the benefits of
Turbo Memory to be utilised

that include Turbo Memory,

07.06.2007Vista Capable scandal
Many will remember a few years back before the launch of Vista, Microsoft decided to tout some PC's as Vista capable. This seemed an innocent and
easy way to boost sales but what happened is a different story. The Vista capable idea was a genuine one at heart. It was designed to allow
consumer to buy new PC's with confidence that the new computer would run the latest version of Vista when it launched. The idea was genius for
Microsoft, they could sell more PC's (indirectly getting sales of the OS and software) and have consumers know they would be able to upgrade with
confidence. What happened was that Intel got in the way.

23.08.2008Windows Vista: The Facts
When choosing a new operating system, the first thing many people ask is, "What will it help me do?" In answer, much of this site shows you the
great experiences Windows Vista helps you have. The second thing many people say is, "Prove that it's better." In particular, many of you have
asked about performance and safety improvements. The following information provides specific proof that Windows Vista is faster and safer.
- The
majority of Windows Vista-based PCs boot in less than a minute, which can be an improvement over Windows XP boot times. And the new Windows Vista
sleep and resume features can bring your PC to life in a snapin fact, the vast majority of all Windows Vista-based PCs resume from sleep in less than
6 seconds.
- PCs running Windows Vista that are equipped with 512 MB memory experience a performance boost of up to 40 percent with Windows
ReadyBoost. Just plug a USB flash drive into your computer, and Windows Vista will automatically start using it to speed up memory access to important
data.

26.01.2007Microsoft cuts Windows Vista price to $66 in China
As was noted
a couple days ago,
Microsoft has now officially
dramatically cut the price of
Windows Vista in China in a
bid to boost sales of its new
operating system.
Microsoft cut the
retail price of Windows Vista
Home Basic in China to 499
renminbi ($65.80), from 1,521
renminbi -- a 67 percent
reduction. The Home Premium
version of Vista also got a
significant price reduction,
down 50 percent from 1,802
renminbi to 899 renminbi.
The new
prices, which were introduced
Wednesday and outlined in a
statement from the company on
Friday, represent a steep
discount compared to what
users in the U.S. and
elsewhere are charged for the
software. Microsoft's Web
site lists the recommend U.S.
retail price of Vista Home
Basic at $199, with Home
Premium priced at $239.
Microsoft
sold 60 million Vista licenses
by the end of June, but many
in the industry remain
unimpressed by the new
operating system. ..

03.08.2007Boost to anti-piracy check in Vista SP1
Microsoft will change the user experience of its automatic anti-piracy checks in Windows Vista and also make it harder for hackers to bypass the
system in the first service pack for the OS due out early next year.
Once Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1) is installed on a
PC, that computer will no longer go into limited functionality mode if a user or administrator fails to activate Vista on that system in 30 days or if
the system fails Microsoft's Windows Genuine Advantage (WGA) validation, which checks to see if a version of Vista is pirated or counterfeit. In
Vista, WGA is called the Software Protection Program feature.
In limited functionality mode, a computer will shut down after 60
minutes and then allow only browser use. Now, instead of going into that mode, a version of Vista that has not been activated in 30 days will start up
with a black screen and a dialogue box that gives users the choice of activating Vista now or later, said Alex Kochis, a group product manager at
Microsoft.

26.01.2007Vista, IE7 help Microsoft boost search market share
According to web metrics firm
comScore, Microsoft's search
engines saw their first market
share increase in nearly a
year (0.4% from February to
March). One month of progress
is nothing to write home
about, as the software giant
is still at a meagre 10.9% of
the total search market.
More importantly,
comScore senior vice president
James Lamberti believes that
increasing adoption of Windows
Vista and Internet Explorer 7
are helping Microsoft's
search efforts since the web
metrics firm is seeing
increased traffic to Live.com.
" Growth from Live.com is
outpacing Microsoft's overall
search traffic growth. Live is
the integration point for
Vista, and it looks like
Live.com is beginning to have
an impact ," said
Lamberti. Assuming
Microsoft's March increase is
not a blip but the start of a
trend, which is something we
won't know for a few more
months, it is very probable
that as Vista adoption grows
so does Live.com's (and
therefore Microsoft's search
traffic), meaning Microsoft's
strategy of making Live.com
the default search engine in
IE7 is working.
Speaking of Microsoft's
competition, comScore reported
yet another month of gains for
Google. Its market share saw a
modest, 0.2% point increase
during March, bringing it to
48.3%. comScore's news for
Yahoo was not as good, as it
was the only one of the top
five search engines to see a
decrease in market share last
month: now at 27.5% from
28.1%, its lowest level in
over a year.
