The Pirate Bay To Bring Back OiNK

The Pirate Bay is currently working on an OiNK replacement in an attempt to bring the hundreds of thousands of music albums back online that disappeared during the raid. The replacement will be released within a week and on the BOiNK.cd domain. BOiNK will be a little different from OiNK. For instance, the tracker will be public and it will start out with a lot less torrents than OiNK had when it was raided. The success of BOiNK will mainly depend on the former OiNK community, who will be asked to upload their old OiNK torrents.

Latest biometric technology scans veins

CNET is reporting that Sony has developed a new biometric scanning technology, called 'Mofiria', that scans the veins in your finger in order to provide access to your laptop or PC. The scanner uses a CMOS sensor to capture scattered light within the finger veins, and compresses the date to allow it to be stored on laptops, or even cellphones. There are many benefits to this new method, claims Sony. Firstly, this technology claims a high accuracy rate, with less than 0.1% false identification. Secondly, it takes a lot less time to scan the finger; it takes 0.015 seconds to scan on a computer CPU, and 0.25 seconds on a mobile phone CPU.

Study reveals that most Americans have false sense of online security

More than half of computer users who think they are protected against online threats like spyware, viruses and hackers actually have inadequate or no online protection, according to an independent research study conducted for Verizon. Verizon's study, conducted with 545 U.S. Internet subscribers by the independent Internet research firm iTracks, contrasted participants' opinions about their level of online security against results of Verizon Security Advisor scans performed on their computers.

While 92 percent of participants thought they were safe, the scans revealed that 59 percent were actually vulnerable to a variety of online dangers. Ninety-four percent of those surveyed said they would find it helpful to be able to diagnose or check their online security status on a regular basis to make sure their PCs were safe.

McAfee buys Web site security company for $51M

McAfee will acquire ScanAlert, a Web application security vendor, for $51 million, the companies announced Tuesday.

ScanAlert, which was founded in 2001, runs a paid service that scans Web sites daily looking for security vulnerabilities and checks if e-commerce applications have up-to-date patches.

McAfee said the business will be integrated into its Web Security Group, which develops McAfee's SiteAdvisor service. SiteAdvisor scans Web sites and scores them according to their risk, taking into account for example whether malicious software is hosted on the site. Consumers can download the SiteAdvisor toolbar that displays that ranking in a group of search results.

Sites using ScanAlert's service display a logo that says "Hacker Safe," which also appears on product listings on Web sites such as Yahoo's shopping channel and Pricegrabber.com. The service is aimed at increasing consumer confidence with e-commerce transactions, which have seen a rising level of fraud.

Digital Art Aids Health Checkups

Doctors are turning to graphic artists to help patients better understand their illness and course of treatment.
The artists turn medical images from 3D anatomical scans into less formidable forms, suitable for patients. Trials of the system have shown it can aid understanding and deepen dialogue between patients and their care givers. The system is also being used as part of a project to raise awareness among diabetics of some of the most serious side-effects of their condition.

"Doctors talk shop, which can be difficult for patients to penetrate," said John McGhee, a PhD student and 3D computer artist from the University of Dundee, who helped to direct the visualisation project. The tools and methods used to pass on information about illnesses and cures were as various as the doctors themselves, Mr McGhee said.

"None are that great," he said. But, by producing simplified images from detailed MRI scans, for example, patients can get a far better grasp of what is happening inside them, how it came about, and what is being done about it, he said.

A Whois search indicates that the site is owned by MediaDefender, a company that specializes in anti-piracy solutions. The application is actually spyware and scans the hard drive for copyrighted content and then reports back to MediaDefender...

Scientists build mind-reading computer

Researchers at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh have developed a 'mind-reading' computer.

It is hoped the mind-reading machine, which can forecast the activity patterns a brain will create for a specific word, will offer a better understanding of how and where the brain stores information and even lead to improved treatments for language disorders and learning disabilities.

Researchers used nine volunteers to train the computer. They were given 58 words and asked to think about the meaning and properties of the words. Brain scans taken when the users were thinking about the different words were then captured using magnetic resonance imaging, which identifies real-time brain activity.

SETI@home needs You!

SETI@home, the distributed computing project, is calling for more volunteers willing to donate their computers' downtime to the project which scans radio telescope data for evidence of intelligent alien life.

Volunteers download a small programme which acts something like a screensaver - it kicks into life when your computer is not doing anything. The software then crunches small parts of data from radio telescopes looking for patterns which could suggest intelligent life. Although each individual computer does not achieve very much, using hundreds of computers means a lot of data can be analysed. SETI stands for the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence.
