13.9.2007Understanding Windows 7 AppLocker
Daniel Nerenberg: Window 7 RTM has been available for just a few weeks now, but already IT Pros everywhere are diving into great new features. One of
the more exciting features introduced in Windows 7 is AppLocker. Many of you know about Software Restriction Policies, they allow you to block the
execution of a program by file name or hash calculation. You probably also know how it was a race to block applications in our network with these
methods. Users could change the name of the file, or applications updates so frequently that you would constantly need to generate new hash
files...

20.02.2009Windows Server 2008 DNS Block Feature
Windows Server 2008 introduces a DNS block feature that may affect the ISA Server automatic discovery when implementing the WPAD mechanism using a
Windows Server 2008 DNS Server.
The block feature provides a global query block list to reduce vulnerability associated with
dynamic DNS updates. Dynamic update makes it possible for DNS client computers to register and dynamically update their resource records with a DNS
server whenever a client changes its network address or host name. This reduces the need for manual administration of zone records, especially for
clients that frequently move or change locations and use DHCP to obtain an IP address. This convenience comes at a cost, however, because an
authorized client can register any unused host name, even a host name that might have special significance for certain applications. This can allow a
malicious user to "hijack" a special name and divert certain types of network traffic to that user's computer. WPAD is a commonly deployed protocol
vulnerable to this type of hijacking, and by default WPAD look up is disabled by the blocking mechanism.

Microsoft has released two new updates for Internet Explorer 8 on Windows 7 RC, via Windows Update. The first update applies only to Windows 7 RC, and
will be fixed in the Windows 7 RTM. The first issue resolved is one which, according to the Microsoft Support site, caused the browser to hang, and
show this error message: "A webpage is not responding on the following website: (Website name)". The update for this issue requires the browser to
restart before it can be applied. The issue is apparently caused by a timer used to detect when web pages have stopped responding, which is normally
fine.
