22.2.2007Royale Noir: secret XP theme uncovered
Sometime after the launch of
XP, somewhere in Redmond,
someone on the Microsoft
design team was in the
progress of developing
something for Media Center. It
was believed to be too
powerful for public
consumption and forever
archived in the servers at 1
Microsoft
Way.
Devoted
Channel9 member W3bbo spotted
an interesting theme on one of
the people_ready television
commercials airing in the
States. After some dedicated
searching, he finally
uncovered this mystery XP
theme by Microsoft. W3bbo
writes,
"D
uring Royales development (the
XP Media Center theme), the
graphic artists also produced
a black version of the skin,
sans the overused glass
effect. The result is an
aesthetic black skin named
Royale Noir, it even works
with Office
2003.
Since the
skin was never released (or
reached final adjustments)
there are a few issues with
it: some of the colors dont
meet the overall feel (theyre
too purple-ish compared to the
greys of the bitmaps) and the
inactive titlebars are a
little too dark.

31.10.2006XP Pro to receive WGA similar to Vista SP1
Remember how everyone was excited about how Vista SP1 received a WGA update to not block you from your computer?
Well, the same is coming
to Windows XP. (Professional only, though. Who would want to pirate XP Home?)
From the WGA Blog:
With this update to
WGA Notifications in Windows XP, we've implemented a couple of related features that draw on the notifications experience we designed for Windows
Vista SP1. After installing this version of WGA Notifications on a copy of Windows XP that fails the validation, most users will discover on their
next logon that their desktop has changed to a plain black background from whatever was there previously (see below).
The desktop
background can be reset to anything else in the usual ways, but every 60 minutes it will change back to the plain black background. This will continue
to happen until that copy of Windows is genuine.
Also, the user will see the addition of what we call the "persistent desktop
notification." This notification is similar to a watermark but works a bit differently. The image (see below) appears over the system tray and is
non-interactive in the sense that you can't click on it or do anything to it.
As with previous releases, if a copy of Windows fails
validation, notifications will appear above the system tray regularly - and we will continue to have the pre-logon message, the logon interrupt
message and the messages that appear from the system tray. jcxp.net -
27.08.2008Apple to offer discounts of up to 15% on Black Friday
While Apple is remaining tight-lipped on what we can expect from their stores on Black Friday, one analyst is predicting consumers will see discounts
of up to 15%. According to Kaufman Bros analyst Shaw Wu, Apple's Black Friday sale will be more aggressive than usual. Apple products are
traditionally more expensive than their non-apple counterparts and price reductions are not commonplace for the tech giant. In past years, Apple has
offered Black Friday discounts between 5 and 10%. If Wu's prediction is correct, consumers will be seeing a reduced price on the iPod, iMac, and
MacBooks. However, Wu is skeptical as to whether or not the iPhone will be subject to the Black Friday discounts.

20.11.2007Hardware thin-client turns XP Home, Linux into 10-user terminal server
Local firm
MUPtech showcased its proprietary thin-client hardware to turn an Win XP Home
and XP Pro system into a multi-user server, running up to 10 remote clients per machine using ultra-thin set-top-boxes as clients instead of full
PCs.
The firm sells these thin black boxes which the company calls "MUP-PC" which are connected to the main "server" -
actually any PC capable of running XP Home or XP Pro - over Ethernet. Each box features connectors for Audio, VGA video, and PS2 keyboard and mouse.
The hardware also supports Linux.
The host PC runs a proprietary software "server" which turns a standard XP Home or XP Pro
into a multi-user server. It would be like Citrix or Terminal Services but without a PC on the client side, replaced instead with this black box.
Where have I heard of this before? Oh yes,
Sun Ray thin clients. Basically this is like having a VNC client in a set-top box, to which you can hook a PS2 keyboard, mouse
and speakers. Their technology is proprietary, though.

29.11.2008Black Hat 'supersizes' in Las Vegas
The 11th annual Black Hat
security conference will
occupy more space at Caesar's
Palace this year in order to
accommodate more people, more
topics, and, of course, more
controversy.
The conference kicked off
over the weekend, starting
with four days of
topic-specific training,
before concluding Wednesday
and Thursday with two days of
public sessions.
If past conferences are
any guide, expect the overall
total attendance to be more
than last year. With that in
mind, Black Hat is expanding
its footprint within the

30.07.2007Microsoft: 5573 Does Not Imply a Specific XP SP3 Build
Marius Oiaga: Microsoft is not saying much at all about the third and final service pack for Windows XP, and whatever information does manage to get
through the translucent filters implemented by Steven Sinofsky, Senior Vice President, Windows and Windows Live Engineering Group,
presents little
relevance. A recent reference related to XP SP3 is Build 5573 from KB951126. Judging by the fact that XP SP 3 Release Candidate 2 Refresh 2 was Build
5508, speculation began circulating of a
new version
number 5573, that could even be the RTM build for the service pack. I contacted Microsoft on the matter, and this is not the case.
"The reference comes from 'A multiprocessor computer that is running Windows Vista or Windows XP stops responding on a black screen after
you resume the computer from hibernation' KB article 951126 available here:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/951126/. The file versions discussed on the Microsoft Help and Support page, referring to a
hotfix for Windows XP SP3, are accurate," a Microsoft spokesman revealed in an email to Softpedia.

14.03.2006Retailers await shaky Black Friday as consumers are expected to cut back spending
It does not take much to predict that Black Friday sales are rather unlikely to set a new record and that retailers wont have much fun this year. Two
surveys shed more light on what we can expect from this Christmas season: Shoppers may be still out in full force on Black Friday and there may be
still lines. What seems to be different this year, however, is that consumers arent just looking for general bargains. They will be looking for very
specific bargains. Big ticket items are expected to suffer the most.
