If You Were Bill Gates, What Would You Buy Next?
If Microsoft chairman Bill Gates gave you a blank check and asked you to spend it in ways that would improve Microsoft's bottom line, what would you do with it? We're not talking planes, trains and automobiles here; we're talking tech investments. We know Microsoft technical evangelist
Robert Scoble would go Web 2.0-crazy with his mad money. But what about you?

04.12.2008TED Conference Pass+VIP Benefits Auction
The next TED Conference,
TED2008 is to be held in Monterey, California
from Feb 27-March 1, 2008. One of our attendees Cameron Sinclair is willing to transfer his pass in order to raise funding for his non-profit
organization Architecture for Humanity. We do not normally permit transfers, but in this case we have agreed to, because Cameron was a winner of the
TED Prize, resulting in the creation of the amazing Open Architecture Network. Cameron wants to raise money to fund the ongoing operation of the OAN
and we're eager to help him. So much so, that we've added the unique extras listed above.
TED memberships cost $6,000 and come
in two main categories: Standard (which means watching most sessions in Simulcast... this is the pass carried by the majority of TED attendees) and
the much sought after Main Hall Priority Pass, which guarantees access to the intimate theater where speakers present. Both types of membership have
been sold out for more than a year and we've had to turn away more than 3,000 people since then.

June.

16.06.2009U.S. senator: It's time to ban Wikipedia in schools
Here's the newest from Sen.
Ted Stevens, the man who
described the Internet as a
series of tubes: It's time
for the federal government to
ban access to Wikipedia,
MySpace, and social networking
sites from schools and
libraries.
Early in
January, Stevens introduced
Senate bill 49, which among
other things, would require
that any school or library
that gets federal Internet
subsidies would have to block
access to interactive Web
sites, including social
networking sites, and possibly
blogs as well. It appears that
the definition of those sites
is so vague that it could
include sites such as
Wikipedia, according to
commentators. It would
certainly ban MySpace.
The bill is, in part,
a rehash of a similar bill
introduced last year, the
Deleting Online Predators Act,
also called DOPA. That bill
passed the house, but got
bogged down in the Senate.
Many people are calling this
year's bill "Son of DOPA"
because of its similarity to
last year's bill.

05.08.2009Source: Microsoft To Announce WorldWide Telescope On February 27
Michael Arrington: A source close to Microsoft says the company will launch new desktop software called WorldWide Telescope on February 27 at the
TED Conference in Monterey,
California. Our guess is that this is what
Robert Scoble was talking about last week when he said he saw a new Microsoft
project that brought him to tears.
The service will be accessed through a downloadable application - Windows only for now is
what we hear. Users will be able to pan around the nighttime sky and zoom as far in to any one area as the data will allow. Microsoft is said to be
tapping the Hubble telescope as well as ten or so earth bound telescopes around the world for data. When you find an area you like, you can switch to
a number of different views, such as infrared and non-visible light.

20.06.2008Windows DreamScene coming soon on Ultimate
Windows Vista Ultimate users
began to receive the first set
of "Ultimate Extras". But
arguably the most anticipated
Ultimate Extra was not there
-- Windows DreamScene.
Windows client
director, Jeff Putt has
confirmed that this extra will
not be available in its final
form immediately after launch.
However, a technology preview
may be coming soon for Windows
Vista Ultimate users who want
to give it a try.
Windows DreamScene enables
users to use looping
high-definition video content
(MPEG, WMV) as an animated
wallpaper. Thanks to the new
3D accelerated desktop in
Windows Vista, the animated
wallpaper uses virtually no
CPU (just a little for
decoding the video).
Microsoft demonstrated
Windows DreamScene yesterday
at the launch event which
showed Windows DreamScene
using an animated wallpaper
created by

. The wallpaper they showed
will be available exclusively
at Neowin.net's partner site,

More information on
public availability for
Windows Vista Ultimate users
