Microsoft's Windows 7 line-up: The good, the bad and the ugly

If you were one of those individuals holding out hope that Microsoft might go the way of Apple and move to one or two SKUs for Windows 7, your prayers have gone unanswered. But there still is some good news in whats on tap when Windows 7 ships, most likely in the third or fourth quarter of this year.

Microsoft went public on February 3 with its planned version (SKU) line-up but not pricing for Windows 7. After receiving an admittedly very quick SKU overview from the Softies yesteray, here are my first impressions of Microsofts new SKU plan...

Rumor of Xbox 360 SKU with Motion Controller

Recently there's been plenty of talk about the Xbox 360 price drops. The cheapest SKU out now; the Xbox 360 Arcade is said to go down to $200, which would make it the cheapest current generation console. Now rumor has it that it will also include a motion controller in its package. The Arcade SKU is said to include the usual arcade games, a 512MB memory card, the forthcoming Fall Dashboard Update preinstalled, and the motion controller as well as motion controlled games developed by Rare. It is said to release sometime in the Holiday 2008 season, but this leaves us wondering if this rumored SKU will be the same $200 rumored SKU said to be released in September.

It is said the motion controller will be sold separately and will be bundled along with a wider variety of games. No word on the price or release date has been confirmed yet.

Microsoft to introduce new 'netbook-like' Windows Server SKU

Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer listed the areas where Microsoft plans to invest in the annual Strategic Update presentation for Wall Street analysts. During the event Ballmer said the company will introduce a new, low-priced Windows Server version in the next couple of months but acknowledged that Microsoft has to decide on how it will handle Windows 7 SKU pricing for netbooks. Ballmer said about 90% of netbooks generally priced at $200 to $400 have been shipped with a stripped-down version of Windows XP and buyers of netbooks with the low-end version of Windows 7 will have the option of upgrading to the more powerful versions.

Exclusive - Nintendo Wii SKU soon obsolete - refresh soon?

Nintendo's hugely popular Wii console has entered the internal status of 'early warning' of a major American retail outlet, meaning the current stock-keeping unit will start being phased out within 90 days and will be replaced, shortly there after, by a newer SKU.

A trusted source with access to internal documents has given Neowin this exclusive story. It remains to be seen whether this development is due to new bundles being released or perhaps coloured versions of the Wii, but the current SKU will definitely begin to be removed from sales channels within 90 days.

We will report more on this story as new facts come to light.

BestBuy beats competition, offers $180 HD DVD player

Despite the retail giants plans to offer a sub-$200 Toshiba HD DVD player, Walmart was recently beaten to the punch time-wise by CircuitCity and now price-wise by BestBuy. Toshibas HD-A2, which started out at $500, is now priced at $180 on BestBuy’s website. Unfortunately, the stock for shipping has already sold out and there seems to be limited availibilty for store pickup. The HD-A2 is, after all, an outdated product that retailers want to clear off the shelves. Toshiba and Sony still have quite a while until the holidays; theres no telling what they have prepared to win movie-lovers over. The HD war continues: to the consumers delight, prices are dropping, but to the consumers dismay, a winner has yet to emerge.

Circuit City files for bankruptcy and what this means to you

Circuit City, the large electronics chain, has filed for bankruptcy on November 10th. The mega-chain of stores attempted to slash expenditures by closing 155 stores and knocking off 17% of its work force. These drastic cuts were not enough to save the dwindling company from bankruptcy.

Circuit City explained that "erosion of vendor confidence, decreased liquidity and a global economic crisis all played a key roll in the down fall of the company." All of this along with no liquidity in its assets caused the mega-chain to buckle.

How will this affect that average consumer? In part, not much will be noticed unless you live near one of the closing stores. If you do, be prepared to see a liquidation sale and if you don't, the stores will continue to operate as normal thanks to a 1 billion dollar credit line that has been extended to Circuit City.

Bestbuy has also planned to potentially buy up closing Circuit City stores where it currently does not have a presence. At least for the areas affected by the store closing it may not mean a loss of jobs to the area. With Circuit City on the brink of disaster the consumer will be impacted the most. With Bestbuy and Walmart growing stronger everyday the barrier to enter the market becomes that much harder.

With less choices it gives more room for the remaining competitors (Bestbuy and Walmart primarily) the option of not being as price competitive as they once were. While both do sell the same electronics many people would prefer to shop at Best Buy rather than Walmart to buy their new TV.

With any hope the Bankruptcy Court will be able to turn around Circuit City. The company has been left in shambles do to poor leadership and even worse training of its employees.

A Microsoft spokeswoman confirmed the 5 version names in Windows 7 beta, but said they were only preliminary. She also added that Microsoft will continue to take customer feedback from the beta test period into account as they refine the SKU set for Windows 7 and will share more information when its available. Microsoft gets an earful on what users want in future Windows releases

In December 2006, Microsoft requested feedback from a select group of invitees regarding what they would like to see fixed, changed and/or added to future Windows builds. The Windows team got an earful: Nearly 800 new feature requests, another 560-plus change requests and almost 400 defects.

That list has been winnowed down to about 70 of the most popular requests and posted the week of July 9 to Microsofts Connect beta site.

This isnt the official Windows Seven or Windows Eight feature list. But the list does indicate some of the features that testers are the most interested in seeing make it into the next Windows release or two.
