Sarah Perez: A new product called
Chirpscreen is a screensaver that displays information from your
social networks. Having just launched into beta, the screensaver currently shows content from Facebook and flickr, but plans to offer much more in the
future. The Facebook content includes status updates from your friends and the flickr content can be your photos or photos from the network that match
a particular tag. The application works by collecting the information from 3rd party sources via its APIs or RSS feeds to display a screensaver of
your personalized content. With the screensaver active, pictures and updates from your friends float slowly across your screen. Each piece of content
the screensaver shows is linked, so you can click it to open up a web browser that goes directly to that page. Chirpscreen is currently available for
Windows only.

17.11.2006Vista Ultimate's promised add-ons just broken promises?
Microsoft Corp. has failed to
deliver on its promise of
downloadable extras for the
highest-priced version of
Windows Vista, critics claim.
Dubbed "Extras" and
exclusive to Vista Ultimate,
the downloads were touted
before, at and after the
launch as one of a handful of
features that separated the
$399 operating system from
the $239 Home Premium. On
Ultimate's marketing site,
Microsoft currently says of
Extras: "These cutting-edge
programs, innovative services,
and unique publications
provide a richer computing
experience for Windows Vista
Ultimate users."
Trouble is, according to
critics like Scott Dunn, an
editor with the popular
"Windows Secrets"
newsletter, Microsoft hasn't
followed through. Since
January, when Vista was
released to consumers, no new
finished Extra have been
offered to Ultimate users.
"Extras is not a minor
feature of Ultimate," Dunn
argued. "It's one of the
things that sets it apart from
Home Premium, and one of the
few unique things that has
been promised Ultimate
users."
Microsoft
issued three Extras when Vista
debuted, including a poker
game; an add-on to BitLocker,
Vista's whole-disk encryption
tool; and language packs for
the operating system's
Multilingual User Interface.
The next month, Microsoft
posted DreamScene, a video
screensaver, in beta form;
DreamScene has not shifted out
of beta since then.

Volunteers download a small programme which acts something like a screensaver - it kicks into life when your computer is not doing

each individual computer does not achieve very much, using hundreds of computers means a lot of data can be analysed. SETI stands for the Search for

02.09.2008JkDefrag 3.4
Free (released under the GNU
General Public License) disk
defragment and optimize
utility for Windows
2000/2003/XP/Vista/X64.
Completely automatic and very
easy to use, fast, low
overhead, with two
optimization strategies, and
can handle floppies and USB
disks/sticks. Included are a
Windows version, a commandline
version (for scheduling by the
task scheduler or for use from
administrator scripts), a
screensaver version, a DLL
library (for use from
programming languages), and
versions for Windows X64.
JkDefrag is based on the
standard defragmentation API
by Microsoft, a system library
that is included in Windows
2000, 2003, XP, and Vista. All
defragmenters are based on
this API, including commercial
defragmenters. JkDefrag is
therefore very solid and there
is no risk of losing data. You
can stop the program at any
time, it will finish the
current file in the
background. If your disks use
NTFS then you're even safe
when the computer crashes in
the middle of defragging.
Nevertheless, it's still a
good idea to backup before
defragmenting, just like with
other defragmenters, because
the heavy use of the harddisk
may trigger a hardware
fault.

26.10.2006Update: "Vista Capable" trial
The ongoing "Vista Capable" class-action lawsuit against Microsoft took an interesting turn the other day when an expert witness for the plaintiffs
claimed that the Redmond company made more than $1.5 billion through their "Vista Capable" marketing campaign. The origins of the trial itself
are to be found in the months prior to Vista's release when many computers were sold with Windows XP and the promise that they would be capable of
running Vista. However, many of these PCs, which sold at a premium and bore the "Vista Capable" label, turned out to be only capable of running
Vista Basic. Hence, Microsoft is being sued for what many would call false advertising.

Microsoft took a three pronged approach to their booth this year. They decided to focus on Vista (again), Games for Windows, and Windows Mobile.
Surprisingly, the Xbox 360 and Halo 3 were not highlighted in the least bit.
It actually surprised me to see Microsoft pushing Vista so
hard, still. Compared to last year, before Vista was released, this year's Vista display was even larger and more in your face. There were more
kiosks, sofas, and lots of Vista logos on anything that could bare one. We know about Vista, though, so let's move on.

30.06.2006Microsoft won't ditch Vista until at least 2011
Even after the release of Windows 7, it looks like Microsoft won't be quick to ditch Vista according to Computer World. Microsoft plans to
continue selling Vista until January 2011. However, they will drop support for Vista in less than 3 years. This seems to go against an earlier hint
by a Microsoft General Manager that the company would get rid of Vista as soon as Windows 7 was released. However, Microsoft not ditching Vista as
soon as Windows 7 is released shouldn't come as a surprise. It's a company policy to keep an OS in distribution for 4 years after its debut.
So what do you think, Neowin?
