HP unleashes wireless network traffic monitoring

HP this week claimed to be the first to implement a technology designed to improve traffic monitoring in wireless networks.

HPs ProCurve Networking enterprise LAN switching business said it has incorporated sFlow technology into its Wireless Edge Services xl Module for its switches. HP just announced this module.

SFlow is an IETF specification “ RFC 3176 -- that uses packet-based traffic sampling to provide network-wide visibility. It is intended to improve insight into network traffic both in wired and wireless environments, allowing customer to quickly respond to security threats, and scale to large network deployments.

Though HP may be the first to implement sFlow for wireless traffic monitoring, it is not the first to implement it for wireline. Extreme, Foundry and even HP began plugging sFlow into their switches three years ago.

HP ProCurve and InMon Corporation jointly developed the wireless extensions for sFlow.

Customers will be able to use wireless sFlow to assist in wireless deployment, troubleshooting wireless signal or performance issues, as well as gaining visibility into network traffic such as top talkers, top applications and connections, HP said.

Who's on first? Wireless network security with Linux

Network monitoring and intrusion detection are integral parts of network security. This becomes even more important when introducing wireless access, because now theres an openly available entry point into your network. You safeguard buildings with security systems, valuables with safes and server rooms with doors. Its important to secure your wireless network too. Heres how to build monitoring in from the onset along with some great open-source tools.

As soon as a wireless access point is installed it begins emitting broadcasts, announcing its Service Set Identifier (SSID) to all and sundry. This is useful: it makes discovery and initial client configuration very swift and painless. Yet the downside is obvious; this doesnt just help your users but any person who is armed with a wireless card “ be it in their laptop, PDA or iPod Touch!

This problem can be counteracted; most all access points (APs) will let you prohibit SSID broadcasts. In this case, the AP waits for a client to connect with the proper SSID and channel. The network is now harder to find “ popular tools like NetStumbler wont see it “ and if it is harder to find, it is also more secure.

Network management software vendors readying IPv6

It may be time to ask your network monitoring and management software vendors about their plans for IPv6 visibility.

IPv6 visibility is "moderately critical," said Phil Hochmuth, senior analyst for Yankee Group. "It's something that's on everyone's checklist. In any government organization, it's going to be a bit higher priority because of the federal mandates they have around IPv6, but it's something ¦ everyone is going to have to have in the future and everyone will have support for it eventually, whether they are network equipment makers or network management software makers. It's better to do it sooner rather than later."

Microsoft aims to slash malware's window of opportunity

A new patent suggests that Microsoft plans to help network administrators fight the spread of malware by developing a network monitoring system that would collect realtime malware data in an effort to prevent malware from spreading on non-protected clients and reduce the time it takes to patch against such malware.

It's quite like Windows Defender, but with a (potentially) much quicker response time, and manageable by network admins. We learned of the new patent from reader James Moody, who wrote to us with word of his find.

A central "trusted entity" (a server on the network) would talk to clients outfitted with special software, working in unison to check application signatures and request more information from clients when the presence of malware is suspected. The monitoring server dynamically builds profiles for each exploit it finds and then prevents it from propagating across the network by notifying other clients of the exploit's features.

Using Certificate-Monitoring Tools with Windows Server 2008

One of the main objectives of administering certificates is to achieve an advanced level of security in your enterprise. Identity and access management should be taken very seriously. In this article we will very briefly cover what CAs are and then cover the important aspects of using specific certificate-monitoring tools such as PKIView.msc and certutil.exe with Windows Server 2008. It is Important to know how certificates affect your security posture and if they are healthy or require maintenance, such as replacement. An expired certificate can show a request of a service to show that your security is weak or non-existent; many times it may even instigate an attack. It may also indicate that you have not taken care of your updates, do not have a maintenance routine, and do not get real time fault-based email or text alerts or worse. This article covers the importance of using certificates, and how to monitor them with Windows Server 2008.
