BBC submits plans to copy protect Freeview HD listings

The BBC has been criticised for its plans to copy protect high definition Freeview content, by encrypting certain data that only manufactures the BBC deem trustworthy will be given the decryption keys to. The BBC says that the plans, which have been submitted to Ofcom, would prevent piracy, according to an article by the BBC. Only the TV listings would be encrypted, as encrypting the actual content is not allowed. This would prevent software which didn't meet the BBC's (or, as is more likely, the HD content provider's) copy protection standards from recording content using TV listings provided by the BBC, according to an article by ZDNet UK.

BBC iPlayer going multi-platform

The BBC has announced its plans to create a platform-independent client in partnership with Adobe.

Erik Huggers, Director of BBC Future Media & Technology, described the plans in a blog post on the corporations site.

"Audio/visual is the soul of the corporation and will form the backbone of a vastly improved bbc.co.uk in the years to come" noted Huggers.

The BBC plans to use Adobe Integrated Runtime (AIR) to enable iPlayer download functionality on the Mac, Linux and Windows operating systems for the first time later this year. According to the BBC whatever platform you use, you'll now be able to download TV programmes to watch later - on the train, in the garden, or wherever you like.

It's not immediately clear if iPhone and iPod devices will be able to play the content as typically Apple has restricted this.

Content will still be DRM protected but not in a way that will affect enjoyment of the programs that the BBC offers.

In a separate announcement earlier this week the BBC also revealed its plans to offer over the air streaming to the Nokia N96.

BBC iPlayer to no longer be Windows only

Since it's release, the BBC's iPlayer has required Windows XP, Windows Media Player 10+ and Internet Explorer exclusively for the on demand TV. But after a lot of griping and moaning, it seems an online petition signed by over 16,000 UK residents (or 16,000 email addresses with a "UK postcode") has changed the outcome of its future.

The Government set up the BBC Trust to represent the interests of licence fee payers, and to ensure good governance of the BBC. The BBC Trust has responsibility for ensuring that the correct degree of scrutiny is given to all proposals from the BBC Executive for new services (such as the iPlayer) and any significant changes to existing services. To fulfill this duty, the Trust conducted a Public Value Test on the BBC Executive's proposals to launch new on-demand services, including BBC iPlayer. This included a public consultation and a market impact assessment by Ofcom. In the case of the iPlayer, following the consultation, the Trust noted the strong public demand for the service to be available on a variety of operating systems. The BBC Trust made it a condition of approval for the BBC's on-demand services that the iPlayer is available to users of a range of operating systems, and has given a commitment that it will ensure that the BBC meets this demand as soon as possible. They will measure the BBC's progress on this every six months and publish the findings."

In actual English: more operating system support is due to become available in the future, but don't expect it next week.

BBC's use of Windows DRM attacked by open source advocates

The BBC's upcoming iPlayer service is being targeted by the UK's Open Source Consortium. The iPlayer in question is a BBC service that will allow viewers to watch any show that they have missed for up to a week after it airs on television. BBC Trust has decided to require DRM on the downloads: the shows will expire after a few days. The BBC chose Microsoft's DRM to protect the downloads, which means that Mac and Linux users are excluded. This didn't sit well with the Open Source Consortium, which has just written a letter to the BBC.

" This action from the BBC effectively promotes one operating system vendor at the expense of others. It is very disturbing that the BBC should be using the license payers' money to affect the operating system market in this way. Imagine if the BBC were to launch new digital channels, but only make them available on a certain make of television-there would be uproar ," said the group's CEO, Ian Roberts. The BBC has already expressed its support for the Mac and claims that something will be done as soon as possible (which will probably involve a RealPlayer system).

BBC sells shows through iTunes

BBC Worldwide has struck a deal with iTunes to sell its programming through the popular online shop in the UK.

A spokesperson for the BBC confirmed that more series will be added in the coming weeks.

OSC not happy with BBC's Windows 7 coverage

The Open Source Consortium (OSC) is getting its knickers in a twist about the BBC's recent Windows 7 coverage.

The OSC has started a complaint with the BBC's Fair Trading Unit claiming that the BBC are advertising a Microsoft product that "does not even yet exist." Obviously the OSC didn't attend Microsoft's recent PDC to pick-up their copy of Windows 7 that clearly exists.

An email, sent to the BBC's Fair Trading Unit, reads as follows:

"You may recall that Open Source Consortium expressed concern about BBC iPlayer and the Microsoft Windows operating system...

...moving forward, it feels like deja vu all over again.

On BBC News we see a two minute advertisement for Windows 7 - the replacement for Vista (link: BBC News item: A closer look at Windows 7). This product does not exist, even if it does come into existence, it will not exist for two years by Microsoft's own projections.<...>

Gerry Gavigan
Chairman
Open Source Consortium"

Not only are they wrong about the product not existing they even got the date wrong as it's likely to be a year until RTM. Last year the OSC slammed the BBC for their use of Microsoft's DRM with the BBC iPlayer.

The BBC's Fair Trading Unit has passed the complaint to the BBC News site and has yet to respond publicly regarding the concerns of the OSC.

BBC unveils next-gen iPlayer

The BBC has taken the wraps off the second version of its hugely popular iPlayer, integrating radio with on-demand TV. The new version is still in beta and will run alongside the original while the finishing touches are added over the next few weeks. "Audiences are now able to experience the full range of BBC content - some 250 TV programmes available each week as well as all the BBC radio networks - in a new and more accessible way, and all for free." The iPlayer has been a huge success, garnering a reported 100 million downloads in the six months since its launch.

BBC in talks on Google link-up

The BBC is in advanced negotiations with Google to make programming available via a branded channel on the search giant's video-sharing site, MediaGuardian.co.uk can reveal.

It is understood that BBC executives are keen that the deal, which involves BBC Worldwide and the BBC, is eventually expanded to include putting content on Google-owned YouTube.

BBC Worldwide is understood to be looking at commercial options for the agreement, such as a share on contextual advertising that will run alongside BBC content.

This would mirror the type of deal that YouTube has in place with US sports organisation NHL.

The BBC will use Google Video as a vehicle to raise the profile of its content by posting clips of popular programming.

BBC suspends its education Web site

On March 20, the BBC will suspend its $289 BBC Jam, which provides free educational content for children in the 5-16 age group, following complaints made to the European Commission that the site unfairly impacts the commercial market for such content. The BBC made the announcement after discussions among the U.K. government, the EC and the BBC Trust, the independent governing body that in January replaced the BBC's Board of Governors. The EC has received a number of complaints alleging that the publicly funded BBC Jam, which has about 170,000 registered users and is operated by about 200 BBC employees, damages the interests of the commercial sector.

" Whilst we are not currently in a position to determine whether the BBC is noncompliant, as alleged by the industry to the EC, we cannot ignore the allegations facing the BBC right now ," the BBC's acting chairman, Chitra Bharucha, said in a statement.

BBC iPlayer download feature available on Linux & Macs

The BBC has released a beta of its popular iPlayer service that will allow Mac and Linux users to download programs and keep them for up to 30 days (or seven, after playing for the first time). The new version has been developed using Adobe AIR, one of Adobe's latest applications, allowing content to run outside of the browser, instead of it being embedded in a Flash player. As each platform requires a different DRM technology, mobile, Linux, and Mac users have been missing out on the download feature that Windows users have had for over a year now.
