MIT to launch Kerberos Consortium

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology is to launch a consortium to further the development of Kerberos, its single sign-on authentication protocol.

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) said the Kerberos Consortium, which will be launched on 27 September, is being formed to "provide a mechanism to permit greater industry participation in the funding and development of Kerberos, and thus allow it to evolve into the universal single sign-on mechanism users need, but do not yet have".

Kerberos was initially developed by MIT in the 1980s, and was released under an open-source licence in 1987. MIT has funded the project since then, but said it has reached a stage where it can no longer meet the demand for development...

Backup More Than 1GB per Second Using SQL2008 Backup Compression

Backup Compression in SQL2008 performs very well and it is easy to use. You could either use With Compression along with the Backup command or simply enable default backup compression through sp_configure by setting backup compression default value to 1. It is very convenient for backups of large databases in our customer lab environment.

A few things you could do to make the backup compression perform better. The hardware we used is 32way HP Superdome and StorageWorks XP12000 disk array.

Whats new with backup and Restore on Vista SP1

Christine Fok: Vista SP1 Backup & Restore contains many updates that improve reliability. Great effort has been put into improving the overall quality of File Backup, Complete PC Backup and System Restore.

Many of those important changes may not be visible to users, but if you run Backup and Restore tools, you can see some functionality improvements that many users had asked for:

Backing-up EFS files

File Backup now backs up EFS (Encrypting File System) encrypted files. For those concerned with security, the encryption on those files are kept throughout the process. So dont worry, you wont compromise your documents security by using our Vista SP1 backup tool.

Restoring Complete PC to a new motherboard

With SP1, you can use Complete PC Restore to a new motherboard that uses previously absent disk controller. That means, if the new hardware requires an inbox driver that was previously disabled when the Complete PC backup was taken, the required critical driver will be enabled in the last stage of the restore to ensure the machine will be bootable.

OTS credentials for scheduling Backup

In Vista (pre-SP1), only someone logged in as administrator could configure backup. Now, its possible for standard users to configure a backup. When scheduling a backup, standard users will be asked to supply administrator credentials. That is what we call over-the-shoulder (OTS) credentials. That is because well, if the user doesnt know the credentials, the administrator usually type it over the users shoulder :-)

MIT touts new mind-to-machine algorithm

Boffins at MIT are getting ever closer to a direct mind-to-machine link that would translate a person's thoughts into instructions for a machine. The university is developing the technology so a paralysed person might be able to operate a prosthetic purely by using their mind.

There are lots of teams working in similar areas. The notion that brain activity should be monitored and used to derive a person's intentions is not new. But MIT says its algorithm will work with all the rest of the research that has already been done, rather than adding a new technique to the pile.

Lakshminarayan "Ram" Srinivasan, lead author of a paper on the subject, said: "The work represents an important advance in our understanding of how to construct algorithms in neural prosthetic devices for people who cannot move to act or speak...we don't need to reinvent a new paradigm for each modality or brain region."

Fifteen backup programs to safeguard your data

There's no way around it: Malware happens, drive failure happens, natural disaster happens. If your data isn't backed up, it's gone -- or it will require an extremely expensive, not-certain-to-succeed recovery operation.

If all you have on your system are scribblings and unimportant downloads, you might not care. But you probably have something of value: scanned pictures of ancestors, wedding videos, a presentation you worked all week on, the song that's going to make you famous.

It pays to back up, and it has never been easier to do so. No matter what method you're most comfortable with, be it traditional file-based backup, image backup, or continuous data protection, one of the following 15 tools will do the trick.

MIT, TI Team Develops Low-power Chips

A new breed of microchip is just over the horizon, thanks to development by Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Texas Instruments scientists. The new low-power microchip is to be presented at the International Solid-State Circuits Conference in San Francisco today by Joyce Kwon of MIT's Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science.

The standard operating voltage for microchips has kept small devices like cellular phones, portable music devices and digital cameras from having a long and healthy battery life. Most commercial microchips operate on about one volt of power. While this is not a great deal of energy, it adds up more quickly than the average iPod user would like. MIT & TI's new low-voltage chip operates at just .3 volts.

Windows Home Server Technical Brief for Home Computer Backup and Restore

Windows® Home Server will automatically backup your home computers to the home server and allow you to easily restore the entire computer or an individual file or folder to a previous point in time. The Windows Home Server Backup solution backs up only the data that has not already been backed up. Even if you have several copies of the same data on different computers, the data is backed up only once on your home server and your home server keeps track of what data was stored on each home computer on each day. This makes it efficient in the time it takes for backups to complete and the amount of space that is used on your home server.
