Balance has now been restored with the introduction of the GeForce GTX 295, giving Nvidia a weapon to compete for the performance crown. The Nvidia
GeForce GTX 295 dual-GPU graphics card features 1792MB of memory which corresponds to the memory capacity of two GeForce GTX 260 boards. However,
unlike the Radeon HD 4870 X2 which is literally two Radeon HD 4870 products stuck together, the GeForce GTX 295 seems to be more of a hybrid, sharing
specs of both GeForce GTX 260 and 280 products. Therefore, what we have here is an insanely fast graphics card that should be more than capable of
taking on the Radeon HD 4870 X2. But how fast is GeForce GTX 295 exactly?
Virus Bulletin (VB ) conducted its latest test in September, posting the results this month. The security research company evaluated 24 anti-malware
products for Windows Server 2008. The basic requirements for a product passing the test is detecting, both on demand and on access, in its default
settings, all malware known to be "In the Wild" at the time of the review, and not detecting any false positives when scanning a set of clean

that looks at how well
antivirus programs do against
threats that have not yet been
identified and included in
standard AV signatures.
The test looked at 17
different products, including
offerings from Symantec,

releases dated February 2

against a swath of new
malwareviruses, scripts,

The winner of this
antivirus sweepstakes was a

to detect and defeat 71
percent of the unknown
malware. Right behind it was
the equally-obscure NOD32,
which swept away 68 percent of
the threats. The more
well-known commercial products
fared more poorly. Norton
Antivirus and McAfee tied at a
mere 24 percent, while
Microsoft's OneCare did even
worse by only identifying 18
percent of the new threats.
Resting at the bottom of the
barrel were Kaspersky and
eScan at nine percent, and
AVG, which detected only eight
percent of malicious software

Microsoft is working hard to nudge customers onto the Windows Vista bandwagon, offering free support to those migrating to Vista SP1. But IT
administrators continue to resist making the kind of aggressive deployments Microsoft would like to see across the board.
Microsoft released Windows Vista SP1 last week, complete with security fixes and other patches Microsoft produced between Vista's launch in early
2007 and the end of last year. Many Windows administrators delayed installing Vista until at least the first service pack. Administrators who tested Vista SP1 in beta gave it poor reviews.
Attitudes haven't changed much since the service pack's release last week.
Angus Kidman: Microsoft has finally rolled out its online storage service in Australia, but it's definitely worth reading the fine print before you
sign up.
<...> A bigger concern is the fine print in the terms and conditions for the service. I can live with all the blather
about potential costs, given that the same conditions apply to every Live service, and even Microsoft must realise that charging for stuff others
offer for free is a quick path to no market share.
But there's some other conditions that, to be honest, suck. Here's one: "By
posting or otherwise providing your submission, you are granting to the public free permission to use, copy, distribute, display, publish and modify
your submission, each in connection with the service."
Google today announced new additions to Google Earth which include Ocean , Historical Imagery ,
Touring , and Google Mars 3D .
Ocean adds the ability to view undersea terrain, shipwrecks, and related
content that has been submitted by oceanic exploration and science experts and advocates. Historical Imagery sounds like it would be mockups of
historical architecture and landscapes, but it's actually the ability to view previous renderings of the Earth as captured by Google's hardware.
Touring gives users the ability to assemble a guided tour of a certain area suitable for presentations. Mars 3D is the equivalent of Google Earth for
the red planet, featuring high-resolution imagery from Mars' surface.
"In discussions about climate
change, the world's oceans are often overlooked despite being an integral part of the issue, About one-third of the carbon dioxide that we emit into
the atmosphere ends up in the oceans," said Eric Schmidt, CEO of Google. "Furthermore, biodiversity loss in our oceans in the next 20-30
years will be roughly equivalent to losing an entire Amazon rainforest, but this goes unnoticed because we can't see it. This is why today's launch
of Google Earth 5.0 is so important - it gives us an opportunity to change everyone's perspective.".. betanews.com - 02.02.2009
BestBuy has re-launched Napster and it's trying a new untested business model. The basic premise of the cheapest plan is that you can get
unlimited streaming of music, keep 5 DRM free MP3's each month for $5.00. This equates to $1.00 per song but you're limited to
choosing five songs a month. The idea behind the program is that you will stream cd quality music to your computer or possibly your device but here
is where things get interesting/unclear. The press release is dated May 19th so the actual plan is not live yet and there are many questions that are
left unanswered.

Everyone loves to get stuff for free. We line up to get a free drink, we sign up for free checking accounts, and we're happy to get a free gift
with the purchase of our next car. We love free stuff, even though we all know and understand that free is an illusion. After that free drink, we pay
for the next three. The bank is making money by investing what we put in that checking account. The car dealer can afford to give away a small gift
because the profit on the car is large. But none of this seems to bother us - free things still have a certain allure. But is the concept of free
taking us down a dangerous road?
Marketers long ago figured out the attractiveness of free. For decades companies have been playing tricks
using free to lure naive customers. But recently, our obsession with free has given rise to a new phenomenon - where the customer is never asked to
pay. How? Because the business makes their money on advertising. Marketers are happy to pay for access to customers, who in turn love not having to
pay. So the web plays the glorious role of middle man. Are we heading into dangerous territory? The paths that we are taking lead to confused
customers at best; and monopolistic practices at worst. A culture where consumers think that increasingly more and more services should be free is not
healthy.
It was bound to happen sooner or later but it appears that the iTunes gift card algorithm has been hacked by someone in China. According to
Outdustry an iTunes gift card with a face value of $200.00 can be bought for as low as $10.00 with reports that they are selling for as cheap
as $2.60. Apple has not officially commented on the matter yet but it seems a change will have to be made to the current algorithm. A scary
thought may be that the algorithm being generated by the Chinese could be on an actual $200.00 card on store shelves right now, potentially
leaving a legitimate consumer out of luck.
