antivirus programs do against
threats that have not yet been
identified and included in
standard AV signatures.
The test looked at 17
different products, including
offerings from Symantec,
McAfee, AVG, Kaspersky, and
Microsoft, and tested how well
releases dated February 2
(with no updates) fared
against a swath of new
malwareviruses, scripts,
trojans, and other nastiesthat
were discovered between
February 2 and May 2.
The winner of this
antivirus sweepstakes was a
product called

to detect and defeat 71
percent of the unknown
malware. Right behind it was
the equally-obscure NOD32,
which swept away 68 percent of
the threats. The more
well-known commercial products
fared more poorly. Norton

Microsoft's OneCare did even
worse by only identifying 18
percent of the new threats.
Resting at the bottom of the
barrel were Kaspersky and
eScan at nine percent, and
AVG, which detected only eight

Virus Bulletin this month released the results of a major comparative of the latest security products, covering a range of metrics. These include
detection rates over various types of malware, false positive rates, scanning speed, proactive detection, and response times to outbreaks.
Taking a look at the first one, detection rates, it's clear that a beta version of GDATA's AVK 2009 (which uses the Avast and BitDefender
scan engines) took first place for both malware (measured against 1,164,662 samples) as well as ad- and spyware (94,291 samples). Avira's Premium
Security Suite 2008 was second for malware, F-Secure 2009 was second in ad- and spyware, and Secure Computing's Webwasher gateway product came
third in both categories.
he most interesting data to emerge from this measurement (4 week span) was that the 2009 version of Norton topped
the table with an impressive 6,202 incremental micro-updates, issued several times per hour, while Kaspersky came a distant second with a mere 696.
Half of the 34 products tested had fewer than 100, including those from McAfee (21) and Trend Micro (30)

TechARP has come up with a new revised schedule of Microsoft's Windows 7 Upgrade Program. The Upgrade Program shifts to an early date from June
28, 2009 to June 26, 2009 now. According to the new schedule, end users who purchase PCs pre-installed with Vista between the dates June 26, 2009 to
January 31, 2010 are eligible for a free Windows 7 upgrade. According to TechARP, this slight adjustment was done at the request of many OEMs to allow
for better sales over the first weekend of the Program. It is not possible for Windows XP users to upgrade to Windows 7 unlike Windows Vista users.

According to a draft announcement leaked to TechArp by a Microsoft OEM partner, the company is planning on allowing users who purchase new PC/laptop
hardware (with Vista) from 1st July 2009 onwards, a free upgrade to Windows 7. The draft states "Windows Vista PCs preinstalled with qualifying
software must be purchased by end users between these dates. OEMs may choose to offer a shorter program period within the allowed date range." The
dates are 1st July 2009 to general availability of Windows 7 which is currently un-announced.

for its App Engine service. Google's App Engine allows developers to run their web applications on Google's infrastructure and, until today, was

bandwidth for about 5 million page views a month. Starting today, however, developers will also be able to purchase additional resources, which will

TechARP has updated the Windows 7 Upgrade Program schedule with some slight changes. According to the new schedule Windows update program will begin
on June 28, 2009 instead of July 1, 2009 which Neowin sighted earlier, and users who purchase PCs preinstalled with Vista between the dates June 28,
2009 - January 31, 2010 are eligible for a free Windows 7 upgrade. Microsoft will allow only 5 upgrade requests from eligible end users (consumers or
small businesses) to upgrade to Windows 7. This means that a user with 12 upgrade coupons will have to visit the fulfillment website at least 3 times

Businesses will have a chance to test the waters before diving into Microsoft's next operating systems, Windows 7. The software giant is inviting
businesses to test their applications on Windows 7 during a free trial at Microsoft's TechEd Conference on May 11-15 in Los Angeles.
Microsoft is offering customers a chance to register for the Windows 7 Bring Your Own Apps Lab. The lab will be free to developers and enable
companies to work with Microsoft engineers on specific Windows 7 compatibility issues, Microsoft's Yochay Kiriaty said in a blog

Everyone loves to get stuff for free. We line up to get a free drink, we sign up for free checking accounts, and we're happy to get a free gift
with the purchase of our next car. We love free stuff, even though we all know and understand that free is an illusion. After that free drink, we pay
for the next three. The bank is making money by investing what we put in that checking account. The car dealer can afford to give away a small gift
because the profit on the car is large. But none of this seems to bother us - free things still have a certain allure. But is the concept of free
taking us down a dangerous road?
Marketers long ago figured out the attractiveness of free. For decades companies have been playing tricks
using free to lure naive customers. But recently, our obsession with free has given rise to a new phenomenon - where the customer is never asked to
pay. How? Because the business makes their money on advertising. Marketers are happy to pay for access to customers, who in turn love not having to
pay. So the web plays the glorious role of middle man. Are we heading into dangerous territory? The paths that we are taking lead to confused
customers at best; and monopolistic practices at worst. A culture where consumers think that increasingly more and more services should be free is not
healthy.
