14.07.2006AVG update breaks iTunes
A recent AVG signature file update is incorrectly identifying iTunes/iPod files as viruses, as reported by forum users on the Apple website. The AVG
Virus scanner identifies all iTunes/iPod related files as the 'Small.BOG' trojan - a trojan which does not seem to exist, as revealed by a
quick Google search. The update, which is unidentified, but confirmed to be a false positive, is removing all files, and deleting them. Once these
files have been "cleaned", iTunes will not run, and is not fixable by a reinstall. A fix has been pushed by AVG in the latest signature update -
but users may need to reinstall iTunes. A fix can be found here on the Apple Forums.

26.07.2009AVG fixes antivirus software skewing Web site statistics
Security company AVG is upgrading a component of its antivirus software so as not to place an undue traffic load on the Web sites it scans. The
company has already released a patch for LinkScanner, part of its Anti-Virus Free Edition 8.0, and will release a patch for the paid versions of the
software on Tuesday, said Lloyd Borrett, marketing manager for AVG in Australia and New Zealand.
The behavior of AVG's LinkScanner
caused much animosity toward the Czech-based company, including a Web site dedicated to the issue, despite the popularity of its free security
software. Web site owners complained LinkScanner was hitting their sites repeatedly, using up the bandwidth they paid for and causing their Web
analytics programs to suddenly record high numbers of visitors. AVG acquired LinkScanner's maker, Exploit Prevention Labs, in December 2007.

“AVG is leapfrogging the competition with its products at the moment and with 60m users in its client base. Exploit gets to put its software on
millions of computers in a shorter time.”

07.12.2007AVG Anti-virus 7.5 Professional Released
After a short beta test, AVG
have released a new version of
their anti-virus product, here
is an excerpt from their press
release:
A
significant addition to the
AVG security software
portfolio, AVG Internet
Security 7.5, includes the
most recent anti-virus,
anti-spyware, anti-spam and
firewall technologies with
reliable automatic updates
while consuming a low level of
computer resources for
convenient use. In the AVG
Internet Security Network
Edition, Gristosft offers
centralized remote
administration, which allows
for remote installation,
updating and management of all
workstations and servers.
Grisoft's existing
portfolio for home, small and
medium business users is now
expanded to include AVG
Anti-Spyware 7.5 and AVG
Anti-Malware 7.5 products. AVG
Anti-Spyware 7.5 offers
protection against Trojans,
spyware, adware, dialers,
keyloggers and worms. The AVG
Anti-Malware program combines
the latest anti-spyware and
antivirus technologies within
a single, easy-to-use
interface.
I
couldn't actually find a
changelog between 7.0 and 7.5
but as the above press release
indicates they have released
six new versions of AVG
Anti-virus bringing it up to
fifteen different varieties of
product so if Vista product
versions have you confused you
better sit down.
I
installed 7.5 Professional as
I bought a licence as a
fallback for Symantec making
Norton more horrible than the
previous incarnation, I just
snapped. The interface in 7.5
is slightly different and has
joined the 21st century, I
haven't checked it out with
Windows Vista yet (5728 will
be checked) so will update
this post with its progress as
the 7.0 updater had issues
with Vista, although seems to
be fine if UAC is not
active.
There is no
estimated release date for the
free version at the moment.

07.07.2008AVG cries wolf at Adobe Reader
A faulty signature update from GRISoft published this week meant that its popular AVG anti-virus package falsely warned versions of Adobe Reader were
infected with a Trojan.
Reg reader Tulio received a false alarm that his system was infected by SHueur-JXW after he downloaded
Adobe Acrobat Reader 7.09. GRISoft acknowledged the problem and said that it planned it issue a new update that fixed the problem on Thursday. Faulty
anti-virus signature updates are far from rare. Symantec, McAfee and others have all had problems in the area in recent months. False alerts are
something of an Achilles heel for anti-virus scanning packages, a factor often highlighted by firms selling alternative approaches to malware
detection (such as white listing)

31.08.2007Report: little-known AV packages outdo those of Symantec, McAfee, Microsoft
Andreas Clementi, who runs the
web site
http://av-comparatives.org/>av
-comparatives.org, has
released his latest report
that looks at how well
antivirus programs do against
threats that have not yet been
identified and included in
standard AV signatures.
The test looked at 17
different products, including
offerings from Symantec,
McAfee, AVG, Kaspersky, and
Microsoft, and tested how well
releases dated February 2
(with no updates) fared
against a swath of new
malwareviruses, scripts,
trojans, and other nastiesthat
were discovered between
February 2 and May 2.
The winner of this
antivirus sweepstakes was a
product called
http://www.avira.com/en/pages/
index.php>Avira, which managed
to detect and defeat 71
percent of the unknown
malware. Right behind it was
the equally-obscure NOD32,
which swept away 68 percent of
the threats. The more
well-known commercial products
fared more poorly. Norton
Antivirus and McAfee tied at a
mere 24 percent, while
Microsoft's OneCare did even
worse by only identifying 18
percent of the new threats.
Resting at the bottom of the
barrel were Kaspersky and
eScan at nine percent, and
AVG, which detected only eight
percent of malicious software
in addition to producing many
false positives...

15.06.2007The Danger of Free
Everyone loves to get stuff for free. We line up to get a free drink, we sign up for free checking accounts, and we're happy to get a free gift
with the purchase of our next car. We love free stuff, even though we all know and understand that free is an illusion. After that free drink, we pay
for the next three. The bank is making money by investing what we put in that checking account. The car dealer can afford to give away a small gift
because the profit on the car is large. But none of this seems to bother us - free things still have a certain allure. But is the concept of free
taking us down a dangerous road?
Marketers long ago figured out the attractiveness of free. For decades companies have been playing tricks
using free to lure naive customers. But recently, our obsession with free has given rise to a new phenomenon - where the customer is never asked to
pay. How? Because the business makes their money on advertising. Marketers are happy to pay for access to customers, who in turn love not having to
pay. So the web plays the glorious role of middle man. Are we heading into dangerous territory? The paths that we are taking lead to confused
customers at best; and monopolistic practices at worst. A culture where consumers think that increasingly more and more services should be free is not
healthy.

20.07.2006Apple to go DRM free?
There are rumors and then there are "rumors". This one falls under the later category that Apple may be taking its iTunes DRM free. While not
every rumor makes it to the front page this one can't seem to die off. Again and again we have heard trickles of whispers that it may happen.
The idea is that DRM free services such as Amazon may catch on much faster than Apple's DRM filled iTunes store. It only makes sense that at some
point Apple would finally seal a deal with the major four record labels to sell DRM free songs as well. It was also noted that a subscription based
iTunes model may not be too far off either.
