12.01.2008Windows Vista SP1 availability for technical customers
Mike Nash: On Monday (February 4th), we announced the release to manufacturing (RTM) of Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1). Overall, people are
excited to hear that we have reached this milestone, but some are disappointed they are not able to immediately download it.
<...> We've heard the feedback and I want to update you on our plans and progress for making SP1 available to our beta participants, our Volume
Licensing customers, and our MSDN/TechNet Plus subscribers:
- Late Friday we made SP1 RTM available to individuals and companies
who participated in the SP1 beta program
- At the end of this week we will be making the English version of Windows Vista SP1 available to
Volume Licensing customers. Other languages will follow soon after
- Later this month, SP1 will be available to MSDN and TechNet Plus
subscribers
For broad availability, we are still planning to release in mid-March, since we want to be sure that everyone has the
smoothest experience possible.
I want to be super-clear on one point: Windows Vista SP1 is final. It has been fully released to
manufacturing and we do not plan to make any changes to the SP1 code prior to public availability. We are confident in the quality of Windows Vista
SP1 and know that it will help improve our customers' experiences with Windows Vista.

16.07.2008XP or Vista - Which is more at risk from Windows 7?
Its been around 30 months since Windows Vista hit the General Availability milestone, and in that time the OS has only managed to claw some 18% of the
OS market share. Compare that weak market share to the aging Windows XP, which even today commands an impressive 73% market share. With Windows 7 now
only a few weeks away from the General Availability milestone, its interesting to wonder what effect 7 will have on XP and Vista market share.

10.06.2008Recognizing Improvements in Windows 7 Handwriting
Steven Sinofsky: Microsoft has been working on handwriting recognition for over 15 years going back to the Pen extensions for Windows 3.0. With the
increased integration and broad availability of the handwriting components present in Windows Vista we continue to see increased use of handwriting
with Windows PCs. We see many customers using handwriting across a wide variety of applications including schools, hospitals, banking, insurance,
government, and more. It is exciting to see this natural form of interaction used in new scenarios. Of course one thing we need to continue to do is
improve the quality of recognition as well as the availability of recognizers in more languages around the world. In this post, Yvonne, a Program
Manager on our User Interface Platform team, provides a perspective on engineering new recognizers and recognition improvements in Windows 7.

03.04.2008Windows Home Server, officially available August 27
If theres one computing server
product every enthusiast and
home-user should be excited
about, that would not be
Windows Server 2003 Datacenter
Edition for Itanium-Based
Systems, instead it should be
Windows Home Server - codename
Q. Last month, WHS was
released to manufacturing
aiming for distribution in
the next couple of months and
retail availability this
fall. The official
availability date is now most
likely Monday, August 27th
2007.
On
the
Microsoft
Support Lifecycle website,
a listing for Windows Home
Server states the general
availability date as
8/27/2007, and mainstream
support retirement date as
10/9/2012. This however does
not suggest OEM products such
as those from HP will ship
then - still expected to come
fall (September).
In this case,
general availability most
likely refers to the DVD
package for system builders
and other OEM channels. If
youre one of those people who
want to build your own Home
Server, then you should
consider bugging your local
computer shop for a copy from
August 27. Alternatively start
your own OEM business.
For those
who are looking for a more
buy-one-and-it-works package,
hold on to your horses and
DVDRip movies for just a
little bit longer as complete
systems are still on-track for
a September release.

17.08.2007Vista Won't End Windows XP Availability
I can't count how many times
people have asked me if
Windows XP would be available
on new PCs following Vista's
release.
In the
near term, the answer is as
much a factor of user demand
and OEM and system builder
policies. That said, Microsoft
will make Windows XP available
from 12 to 24 months after
Vista's general availability,
depending on the sales
channel.
According to Life-Cycle
Policy Website, Windows XP
Home, Professional, Tablet PC,
Media Center and 64-bit
editions would be available in
direct OEM and retail licenses
for 12 months following
Windows Vista's general
availability, which is
scheduled to be Jan. 30, 2007.
System builder licenses would
be available for another
12--or total 24--months from
Vista's general availability.
License
availability doesn't
necessarily mean operating
system availability. I presume
Microsoft will get Windows XP
off retail shelves as quickly
as possible after Vista ships.
OEMs are another matter. While
I generally like Windows
Vista, I agree with some users
of the "gold" code that say
the operating system feels
unfinished, like a work in
progress. Some customers
choosing to wait may ask OEMs
or system builders for Windows
XP.
