1.12.2006Microsoft shuts down popular Windows patching package, AutoPatcher
Microsoft Legal defies logic today by
forcibly removing a free and trustworthy
software package which makes updating Windows more convenient and accessible.
AutoPatcher, for those who dont know, was an impressive
Windows community project that combined publically available
Windows hotfixes and security updates each month to form a single package that could either be installed in a batch or burned on to an CD. To those
who regularly format their computers or fix other peoples computers (for which I share you pain), AutoPatcher not only saves bandwidth but precious
time downloading each individual update from
Windows Update.
It is not hard to imagine AutoPatcher violated some clause in some terms of service
somewhere, but why Microsoft would act on it, and act on it now is unbelievable. If AutoPatcher could be as malicious as Microsoft suggests, then
why havent they acted on it sooner?

29.08.2007Microsoft Ceases AutoPatcher Project
I had a call from Microsoft Legal this morning and they have told me that we are no longer allowed to endorse AutoPatcher on Neowin.
Microsoft will only allow updates to be downloaded from its own servers.
AutoPatcher started in 2003 and has been redistributed in some
of the worlds best computer magazine cover CD/DVD's. I have no explanation for why Microsoft allowed it to continue unchecked for 4 years before
making this decision.
I asked the representative if Windows Genuine Advantage had anything to do with it and he categorically told me this
was not the case, he added that Windows Update for pre-Vista versions of Windows can now be accessed using Firefox and that the concern at Microsoft
had more to do with the possible malicious code that could be redistributed with certified Microsoft updates.
We have no grounds to
challenge the decision by Microsoft.
I'd like to thank the whole AutoPatcher team for their continued work, unfortunately none of the team
is online, but they have been contacted via the AutoPatcher.com website by Microsoft Legal.
The AutoPatcher forums on Neowin have been
disabled for guests and members.

22.12.2006Microsoft Remains Silent on AutoPatcher
Yesterday morning an Internet Investigator representing Microsoft called me at home requesting that Neowin cease all activity with AutoPatcher, a
program headed by Antonis Kaladis and endorsed by Neowin for little under 4 years. Antonis received a standard take down request email through his
AutoPatcher.com email address. We complied by pulling the forums on Neowin and the download page at AutoPatcher.com.
The news was quickly
picked up by the likes of CNET, Slashdot and others but as of this posting we are yet to receive any sort of clear explanation as to why this decision
was made 3 years after the program had been widely adopted by Neowin members, computer magazines and the industries system admins who use the program
to speed up the installing of corporate machines.
A Microsoft Featured Communities representative as well as the Internet Investigator
handling the case has pledged to look into the situation to find out exactly what prompted this sudden move. The only short explanation offered was
the possibility of delivering malicious files with the package, something the AutoPatcher team has never done.
Updates which require WGA
(Windows Genuine Advantage) validation are included, and can be installed (since the WGA validation only takes place on the machine that downloads
them, not the one that is installing them) which theoretically bypasses the validation check users would normally have to go through if updating
through Windows Update. Antonis had asked when WGA became common if this would affect the AutoPatcher project and the concept of administrative
updates and a Microsoft representative said "No", arguing that the purpose behind WGA was mostly educational. The WGA tool itself (the one offered
by Windows Update as a critical update) is included in AutoPacher, though not marked for installation by default.

30.08.2007Community fights back for AutoPatcher
Microsoft's move this week to close down the AutoPatcher project, a project well known and supported here on Neowin, that allows users to update
their computers without requiring an internet connection, has met with cries of outrage from members of the Neowin community, and IT professionals
from around the world.
Since the initial take-down messages were sent out, and contact was made with both the Neowin administrators, and
the project managers of AutoPatcher, Microsoft have fallen silent on the issue, leaving the community with little explanation about the reasons behind
their action.
As seen by the number of responses the the news articles, and forum topic here on Neowin, and the news item posted on
AutoPatcher's official website, the community is taking this issue very seriously, and are unlikely to let it rest without a full explanation from
Microsoft officials.
In a display of support for AutoPatcher, one fan and Neowin member, M2Ys4U, took it upon himself to make a solitary
protest outside Microsoft's UK HQ building in Reading this afternoon. As he wasn't permitted to enter the campus, he made a stand outside the gates,
displaying his 'Save AutoPatcher' sign for about an hour, before being asked to move on by security.
Whilst Neowin.net does not
officially endorse such a protest, we are pleased that it remained peaceful and nobody had to get hurt.

29.03.2008Windows Home Server, officially available August 27
If theres one computing server
product every enthusiast and
home-user should be excited
about, that would not be
Windows Server 2003 Datacenter
Edition for Itanium-Based
Systems, instead it should be
Windows Home Server - codename
Q. Last month, WHS was
released to manufacturing
aiming for distribution in
the next couple of months and
retail availability this
fall. The official
availability date is now most
likely Monday, August 27th
2007.
On
the
Microsoft
Support Lifecycle website,
a listing for Windows Home
Server states the general
availability date as
8/27/2007, and mainstream
support retirement date as
10/9/2012. This however does
not suggest OEM products such
as those from HP will ship
then - still expected to come
fall (September).
In this case,
general availability most
likely refers to the DVD
package for system builders
and other OEM channels. If
youre one of those people who
want to build your own Home
Server, then you should
consider bugging your local
computer shop for a copy from
August 27. Alternatively start
your own OEM business.
For those
who are looking for a more
buy-one-and-it-works package,
hold on to your horses and
DVDRip movies for just a
little bit longer as complete
systems are still on-track for
a September release.
