26.02.2008Microsoft Deployment v1.0 Available
Microsoft Deployment unifies the tools and processes required for desktop and server deployment into a common deployment console and collection of
guidance. The fourth generation deployment accelerator adds integration with recently released Microsoft deployment technologies to create a single
path for image creation and automated installation. Microsoft Deployments tools and end-to-end guidance reduce deployment time, standardize desktop
and server images, limit service disruptions, reduce post-deployment help desk costs, and improve security and ongoing configuration management.
Microsoft Deployment technologies eliminate interaction time required to install desktop and server operating systems. Interaction
at the targeted computer may take a few moments using the Lite Touch Installation (LTI) method or it can be completely automated using Zero Touch
Installation (ZTI). Zero Touch Installation utilizes Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager 2007 or Systems Management Server 2003 with the
Operating System Deployment Feature Pack. Lite Touch Installation can be used when software distribution tools are not in place.

13.12.2007Deploying Windows Server 2008 with Microsoft Deployment
Michael Niehaus: We'll be coming out with an update for Microsoft Deployment sometime later this month (February) to fully support Windows Server
2008 and Windows Vista SP1 deployment with the Windows Automated Installation Kit 1.1, all of which were released to manufacturing this week. To give
you an idea of what this deployment process looks like, I recorded a video that walks through the steps of installing Windows Server 2008 using
Microsoft Deployment's Lite Touch capabilities. To make things a little more interesting, I decided to use the Server Core installation option. All
total, the recording lasts just under 10 minutes, although that includes some editing to remove the boring parts.
Lite Touch Windows Server 2008
Walkthrough Note that there is no wizard screen at the end of the process to show the results. This is because the Server
Core installation option does not include Internet Explorer (among other things). So using HTA applications isn't possible...

03.01.2008Deployment 4 Beta 3 Released
Deployment 4 is the code name for the next version of Business Desktop Deployment (BDD) 2007 and unifies the tools and processes required for desktop
and server deployment into a common deployment console and collection of guidance. For the thousands of IT professionals already trained on BDD 2007,
Deployment 4 requires minimal extra training to perform large-scale Windows Server 2008 and Windows Server 2003 deployments, while offering a further
enhanced desktop deployment experience. Deployment 4 adds integration with recently released Microsoft deployment technologies to create a single path
for image creation and deployment, including:
- System Center Configuration Manager 2007 Operating System Deployment
- Windows
Automated Installation Kit
- Windows Deployment Services with new multicast technology
- Application Compatibility Toolkit 5.0
- User State Migration Tool 3.0.1
- Windows Server 2008 Server Manager for automated server role definition (coming soon)
Deployment 4 Beta 3 combines the guidance and toolset from previous releases of Business Desktop Deployment and Beta releases of Windows Server
Deployment. This release continues to support Zero Touch Installation (ZTI) of desktop operating systems using Systems Management Server (SMS) 2003
with the Operating System Deployment Feature Pack and adds new deployment and task sequencing capabilities for desktops and servers using System
Center Configuration Manager 2007. Deployment 4 also continues to provide Lite Touch Installation (LTI) support without infrastructure requirements
and adds capabilities for Windows Server 2003 and pre-release versions of Windows Server 2008.

07.12.2007Windows Server 2008 Developer Training Kit (Beta 3)
The Windows Server 2008 Developer Training Kit includes a set of hands-on-labs and presentations for technologies such as IIS7, Management, WCF, WF,
Windows CardSpace, Windows PowerShell, Virtualization and the Transactional File System (TxF). The content was originally created by Microsoft's
Developer & Platform Evangelism group as part of the Windows Server 2008 Touchdown training activities.
The seven hands-on labs
included in this kit are based on the DinnerNow sample application. The entire source code for the DinnerNow sample application can be downloaded from
codeplex (see the related resources), however, this sample is not required for using the developer training kit.
Although this
kit is intended to show developers how to build applications that target Windows Server 2008 technologies, the kit can be installed on Windows Vista,
Windows XP, and Windows Server 2003. The hands-on labs and most of the technologies covered in this training kit also apply to Windows Vista.

18.08.2008VS2008 SP1 and .NET FX Beta Performance Improvements
David Berg: Visual Studio 2008 SP1 is packed with new features, major updates to frameworks, and fixes. So much so that with everything installed
(including x64 and ia86 support) you would need to download and install about 1GB of updates. Which brings us to the first and most important
performance improvement “ you only download what you need!
VS2008 SP1 includes a new installation / update engine. You just
download the installer, which then analyzes your system installation, and only downloads the components you need. Thus a default installation of
VS2008 Team System will only download about 600mb (and less still if you dont have all the default components installed). Download performance will
vary substantially based on your internet connection and network contention; however, it generally outperforms an IE file download, and will
automatically restart in the middle if your network connection drops out and comes back. (However, if you cancel the install, it will restart at the
beginning.)
