The Windows Server 2008 Developer Training Kit includes a set of hands-on-labs and presentations for technologies such as IIS7, Management, WCF, WF,
Windows CardSpace, Windows PowerShell, Virtualization and the Transactional File System (TxF). The content was originally created by Microsoft's
Developer & Platform Evangelism group as part of the Windows Server 2008 Touchdown training activities.
The seven hands-on labs
included in this kit are based on the DinnerNow sample application. The entire source code for the DinnerNow sample application can be downloaded from
codeplex (see the related resources), however, this sample is not required for using the developer training kit.
Although this
kit is intended to show developers how to build applications that target Windows Server 2008 technologies, the kit can be installed on Windows Vista,
Windows XP, and Windows Server 2003. The hands-on labs and most of the technologies covered in this training kit also apply to Windows Vista.

11.02.2008Thoughts from the field on Windows Server 2008 “ Setup
Dave Northey: Larry Doyle, a local IT Pro, works for Netforce in Dublin (one of our local Certified Partners). Larry has been attending my Longhorn
Academy (deep-dive technical training on Windows Server 2008) for the last six months or so and has been actively testing and evaluating Windows
Server 2008. He has this to share with you:
śI have been testing Windows Server 2008 for a while now and I do actually like it -
it's fast & quick to setup. I particularly like the roles element as I would normally spend a considerable amount of time "trimming" un-required
services from a production server that are auto installed or auto started in Windows 2003 Server installs (saying that I don't usually use the manage
server wizards in 2003 which might save a bit of effort). I havent timed it, but it seems like 2008 will save me hours for each install I perform
(and Ill be happy that the end result is what I actually wanted).

04.12.2007Hackers update malware tool kit, add first zero-day attack code
A new version of the IcePack hacker exploit tool kit has been released, security researchers warned today, and for the first time it includes attack
code designed to exploit an unpatched, or zero-day, Microsoft vulnerability.
Three of IcePack's eight exploit tools are new,
said Roger Thompson, chief technology officer at Exploit Prevention Labs Inc. That's noteworthy in and of itself, Thompson said. "The mix of old and
new exploits is to be expected, but three new ones in one update is pretty impressive," he noted.
But the new tool kit also
sports a first. "The latest iteration has done something original," said Thompson, pointing to an exploit that attacks a zero-day vulnerability in
Microsoft's DirectX software development kit (SDK). "The closest to a tool-kit zero-day exploit
was for the ANI
vulnerability."
He was referring to a Windows bug that surfaced in early April. By the time that Mpack, an IcePack predecessor,
added the ANI exploit, however, Microsoft had patched the vulnerability with an emergency out-of-cycle update. ..

CES2008: Crucial External SSD Kit
At CES, there were several booths showing off functioning solid state disks (SSD). One that caught our eye was the Crucial SK01 External Drive Kit.
This kit gives you the benefits of having a SSD as well as higher portability. The kit comes with a 3.5" bay, 5.25" drive bracket, and a 2.5" USB
2.0 enclosure for a SSD. This allows you to plug the drive into a computer and get SATA2 3Gb/s speeds, and then eject it to have the ability to take
it anywhere and plug it into any USB. This hot-swappable feature may prove to be very useful.

AutoRuns for Windows a few
days ago. This utility, which

Run, RunOnce, and other
Registry keys.
You can configure Autoruns

Windows 7 upgrade chart available
Microsoft has made available the official Windows 7 Upgrade chart, via allthingsd which indicates which previous versions of Windows are available for
an in-place upgrade to Windows 7, and to which version they can upgrade. You can view the chart below: As you can see from just a glance at the
chart, it's relatively confusing. Windows 7 offers no direct upgrade path from XP, which was announced very early on in the Windows 7 development
life cycle. Very specific upgrade paths from other versions of Windows Vista exist also. You can perform a "Custom Install" which is pretty much a
clean install, but you have the option to install Windows 7 to another disk without overwriting data.
